I'm a student black-belt in Aikido. I'm also training in Shotokan Katate. Aikido is the art of throwing and falling. Karate is the art of punching and kicking. While my martial art (MA) of choice is Aikido, Karate is Really good for letting off some steam.

Discuss your favorite Martial Arts.

Today I practiced on a kaiten-nage throw. I throw okay but I Really enjoy being thrown. Its almost like a mini roller-coaster ride.

Don't want to say it too loud but...wrong forum? (Just in case I'm wrong)

But anyways =D
I want to learn Kendo, while not entirely a martial art but rather a discipline (in my unprofessional opinion), is still entirely awesome. I would love to learn Aikido and wanted to do that as my senior project, but no, my school wouldn't let me.

ROLLER COASTER THROW.

uh, I don't know if I have a favorite martial art. I've always wanted to learn one though. I think it'd be rather cool. :>

wonder if martial arts teachers will still take students who are like 20+. ninja

(not that I'm 20.)

Question:
What if you're not a kid anymore
and you decide you want to join a group for any sport.
Is it possible to join in and do you get put in a class
with a lot of other first-year students who have never
practiced that sport before?

... I feel like that is a dumb question.

I practiced Taekwondo for five years when I was younger. I got my second degree black belt (recommended).
I really enjoyed it, and I was being trained as a junior instructor - but I grew tired of having to be nice to kids, so I quit my freshman year of highschool.
Being a junior instructor was cool because we got to learn a lot more stuff than the normal classes - I LOVED the bo staff, so much so I actually went out and bought one (Which unfortunately is now way too small for me to use efficiently D: ). But being a junior instructor was also really irritating... which is why I quit.
Sometimes I regret it... but not very often. I was in really good shape when I was doing it, and I was way more flexible.

Also, last semester I decided to take Karate 101 at my college to fulfill a phys ed requirement. It was interesting, because I'm not entirely sure what form of karate he was instructing- but things were much different. And it was an easy A for me and one other kid - since we were both black belts he basically didn't even look at us during class AND he had us grade the other members of the class for their final.

I miss my ability to do crazy kicks and stuff.
And I DEFINITELY wish I had a bigger bo staff, and that I had more training in it.

Well, ever since I heard about it, I wanted to learn Capoeira. Unfortunately, my incredible laziness, and the fact that I tend to plan things that never really pan out, has stopped me from even trying. I'm an exceptionally lazy person.

Capoeira was fun, I took some in after-school every once in a while.
And Aikido, I was the only one who could fall right.

I'd learn several martial arts just because the experience would be great. It's fun to explore these things for me.

....but I'd still end up using my own style.

User ImageI practiced "Japanese swordsmanship" for about two years.
I say it that way because we didn't concentrate on one thing, rather it was (excuse my spelling) Kendo, Iai, Iaitsu, Kenjutsu, ninjutsu, tameshigiri, and aikido mixed together and taught... Twice a week I think.

Regardless I know the proper way to use a Katana, and to be honest once you've trained with one their "coolness" factor goes down a lot.

Aikido was pretty awesome though.

Aside from that, I did 5 years on and off of horseback riding. I didn't really do it for sport, but I think it counts. I couldn't do an actual dressage or jumping competition but I know how. I helped train horses for a little bit.

I like both but if I had to pick one... I dunno. I guess Aikido or Horseback riding. They're both more practical. If you just studied japanese swordsmanship by itself, you're pretty ******** if your katana's gone.

Edit: What, is imgleft broken in guilds or something?? D;

edit2: Disregard all that horse talk. For some reason I thought we were talking about sports in general, not martial arts. sweatdrop

I won't disregard the horsemanship. I had an Amish house-kid who thought the breakfalling was useless. She went home on vacation and was thrown from a horse. She brokefall and managed to save herself from injury.
