Character Info
Name : Samantha Carmine
Age : 17
Gender : Female
Appearance :

Samantha is of slightly above-average height and athletic build, with subtle feminine features. Since she moved to the city, she has whacked off her long, deep red locks in favor of a much shorter hairstyle. She isn't too attentive to her hair, but she would never leave it totally unpresentable. Her bright emerald eyes are large and shaped like almonds. The face itself is round in shape, and normally carries either a shy smile or a somewhat blank and dreamy expression.
Her wardrobe, for the most part, never changes unless there is a special occasion. One thing that she is hardly ever caught without is her green plaid scarf. This old cloth is important to her, and she even wears it in the warmer seasons. Other than that, she normally wears an overcoat, most commonly black plaid in pattern, over a plain white shirt. Moving down, there are black breeches with grey vertical stripes, long, white stockings, and a pair of somewhat dressy, flat-heeled shoes in black, or perhaps a very dark brown. On formal occasions, she will most likely still dress in a more masculine fashion, as she hasn't had or worn a dress since she was too young to have an input on her clothing.
The one clothing item that does tend to vary widely from day to day is her hat. While she doesn’t always wear one, she has collected quite a few over the years. Her favorites are typically masculine in style, and include Gatsbys, flat caps, berets, and top hats.
Personality : Samantha, first and foremost, is a shy young lady. She isn’t very good at meeting new people, almost acting afraid of them. When surprised or excited, she gets a bit squeaky; many think this cute, but more serious folks could be annoyed by it. Behind this nervous cloak is a sweet and creative girl. She loves nothing more than relaxing with her drawings, or writing stories that tend to pop into her head when she should be paying attention to something else.
Samantha loves being at school and does well overall. But she daydreams quite often, sometimes missing crucial information as a result. Because of this, her grades might not reflect how bright she really is in subjects that don’t quite capture her attention.
Oddly enough for someone with a shy disposition, she loves to be in large groups. One of her fears is, in fact, being utterly alone. As just another face in the herd, she feels safe, and not pressured to come out and show others who she really is. For security's sake, she loves going unnoticed through crowded streets, able to daydream as she's lost in the sea of faces. However, despite what she thinks she needs, it can be said that Samantha truly shines when she is on her own, or in a smaller, more tightly-woven group. It is then that her creativity can come through, along with her sense of humor, cleverness, and other delightful qualities.
Unfortunately, Sam lacks general self-confidence. Prone to cringing under her superiors, she’s also very obedient. In short, it’s hard for her to stand up to others, and she even sort of likes being told what to do sometimes.

History : The Carmines are an old family with a history soaked in blood. Tracing the lineage back far enough, one could note that this family used to be warriors, be it as soldiers or some other manner of fighting profession. At one point, they had risen to the upper classes as nobility, but this was short lived, as they returned to merely being of marginally wealthy standing. In more recent times, Guardsmanship is the family profession, with nearly every man in the recorded bloodline spending at least some time as a guard.
The first of the three Carmine newest brothers to take a wife was also the youngest of the siblings. Before long, he discovered with delight that his beautiful wife was with child. In a new home and a new town, everything seemed like a dream. He was well on his way to becoming a guard for this city, and soon he would be able to support his new family without helpful packages from home.
However, on the eve of Samantha’s birth, something went wrong. The baby was fine, but Mrs. Carmine did not survive the ordeal. In an instant, Edsel Carmine had become both a father and a widower. The grief and joy whirled together as he tried to focus on the one that needed him most now.
Growing up, Sam was initially a very reclusive girl. She was docile, and lacked the outgoing and athletic touch that her father’s line was known for. Yes, she was more like her mother than Edsel could’ve hoped for. Still, he began trying to give her more confidence by persuading her to go out and make friends, and pushing her to go on morning jogs with him and the occasional guard buddy. It really did begin to work, much to the father’s surprise; Samantha lost none of her sweetness or creative flare, but found a new love in the hustle and bustle of the city streets. She still felt a bit uncomfortable going anywhere without her father or that huge grey dog daemon of his, but things were looking up. Soon, people were seeing more than the deep red hair linking the father-daughter pair.
However, this happy time did not last forever. When she was approaching her seventeenth birthday, Samantha began to note an ominous feeling about the household. Her father had become very tense about a string of murders in the town. Frightened, she agreed with his request that she never go out alone until the culprit had been apprehended.
One dark afternoon, while Samantha was busy drawing a gift for her father, she noticed that something was amiss. An hour passed after her father was due home, and she became worried. When she went to the door, about to go out and find him, she was met at the door by one of his friends from the guard. He insisted that she sit down before he said a word. At that moment, the girl knew that she had lost the only man that had ever meant anything to her.
The guardsman informed Sam that her father had caught the serial murderer that had been stalking about town in the act. There had been a struggle in one of the darker alleys, and Edsel had taken a mortal wound before he slew the killer and saved the helpless victim. Before the victim managed to struggle out of her binds and scream for help, Samantha's father had lost conciousness. Despite the other guards' best attempts to aid him once they finally arrived, he bled out at the scene.
Edsel Carmine had died there, and with him most of Samantha’s confidence. She had thought her father invincible, and his death came at quite a shock. Her uncles came to town for the funeral, and were about to take her in when she mentioned something about a voice in her head telling her that everything would be alright. They knew well that it was her daemon manifesting, and gently offered to send her off to a school if she felt comfortable enough. Not wanting to be a burden on her uncles at her age, she could think of little else to say than yes. She sold her father’s home and a few less precious possessions, leaving the rest that she did not want to take with her with her eldest uncle.
Soon, she was on a carriage to Jaradin, looking forward to a new life at the old school.
