A little girl stood with her face pressed against the glass, watching the puppies wrestling on the other side. She was one of a few kids standing around in much the same manner - although the was the smallest, and, you had to admit - the oddest. A pair of gossamer wings fluttered at her back, going faster when any of the puppies did anything particularly exciting. Some of the parents were watching her, rather than the animals their children were so interested in - but the kids around her had already gotten used to the novelty of the bee-girl, and found the black labrador puppies more entertaining.

Rex didn't really see the appeal. Well - he supposed the dogs were sort of cute in their pen. But when he mentally put one into his basement apartment, chaos ensued. Not that his apartment didn't already look like chaos, but... well, at least it didn't smell of dog.

"Rex! Look! Look at this one, Rex!" Nellie had tore herself away from the glass just long enough to make her way to her guardian and pull him back towards it. She never called him 'dad' - which was fine by him, because he was still pretty awkward explaining to people that she was sort-of-his-kid-but-not-really. Either way, he followed her to the pen reluctantly, carefully avoiding stepping on anyone's kid. Yes, he'd done that once. Not his goddamn fault kids were so goddamn tiny.

"This one!" The girl pointed to a leggy greyhound puppy, once they had made it to the window. "Why is he so skinny?"

Anao was not entirely sure how she'd been roped into taking Wren to the pet store. Certainly they were loosely related and she'd wanted to go anyways to look at things but the redhead didn't recall volunteering to take him. Not that she disliked her sort of cousin or found his company irritating but well little kids were supposed to be notoriously bad in pet stores. She'd only planned only quickly doing a price check for some things but she had a feeling this trip was going to end up longer than that if Wren caught sight of some animal or another he had to check out.

Wren himself was quietly tagging along after Anao the young songbird excited but containing it mostly in his eyes and quivering wings. He wanted to get treats for mac so he could help train him. The purple Mac'baht would be going with Tezza to school some days but other;s he'd be home and Wren was curious to try his luck at making the strange creature behave.

Added to that was the fact that the small brunet wanted to see some normals animals as well. Most of the ones on the CDL grounds were special creatures and as neat as they were something in the tribal marked boy wanted to see more natural creatures.

His feathers ruffled a bit and he gave a small chirrup as they entered the store. There were so many animals he thought as his eyes went wide. So many things tugged at his attention.

"Are they not giving him enough food?" She asked again, more insistently. Rex looked sheepish. As usual. "I think... he's supposed to look like that. He's one of those... running dogs. Like in races. A..." He searched for some kind of tag, and found one in the corner of the window eventually. "A... greyhound. Yeah. They're skinny and fast. Well. When they grow up they're fast." The puppy behind the window right now looked like he could barely walk. Maybe he was sleepy or something, but he kept rolling onto the ground every second step he took.

"He's silly." Nellie giggled, nose pressed to the window. "I want him."

"We can't have a greyhound." Rex shook his head - not really expecting the little bee-girl turn to glare at him sharply. "He's... he's gonna be really big soon, Nellie. Like... way bigger than you. We're not gonna have any room." Not to mention the dorky-looking dog cost several thousand dollars.

"You're bigger." Nellie pointed out after a moment's thought. "And we've got room for you." Took Rex a while to recover from that one. "But I told you," He finally ventured. "He's a running dog. Where's he gonna run?" This, of course, lead to more arguments. She'd take the dog out. The dog would drag her away on end of his leash. And so on... unfortunately for Rex, debating wasn't his strong suit and Nellie was a natural. She was also getting uncomfortably loud.

"Nellie - Nellie, be quiet, we can't get a dog and - Nellie - " He groaned, casting a desperate look to the woman standing beside him. Wouldn't be the first time Rex took parenting help from strangers. And it wasn't like she was completely a random person... she had a kid with her too, didn't she? He'd seen something dart around to the puppies earlier. Even if it wasn't her kid, she was still managing him a heck of a lot better than he was.

Anao resisted the urge to laugh at the man beside her, she'd been just like the little girl who was with him once. Chances were the tiny winged child had a response for every argument he had towards not getting a dog. Not that that meant Nellie would win, at least not if her father stood firm in his decisions. The adult always got final say regardless of if he won the argument. Although this man looked like he was having a hard time standing his ground.

The redhead looked down at the little girl and smiled softly. " You know puppies are a lot of work and greyhounds are a very special type. Even if you walked it everyday the puppy would need a lot more exercise than that or it'd get sick and angry and bite people." Anao had wanted a greyhound once, a bit of a speed demon herself she'd dreamed of biking alongside one for exercise and racing each other for fun. She'd learned though they they needed an average of two hours of exercise everyday and when she;d been younger she just didn't have two hours to devote to that.

"Soon you'll probably be big enough for school and you won't have time for a puppys" she added. Sometimes you needed to do more than just say no, you had to repeat logical facts until a kid realized they couldn't keep arguing. At least that had worked with her and Owen growing up.

Wren slid over to investigate the dog in question. Green eyes peered down at the skinny funny looking puppy " He's smaller than Mac" the songbird was a bit surprised. Although technically the puppy wasn't physically smaller than the macbaht Wren could see that the greyhound's stomach was smaller in proportion to his body than Mac's was.

Nellie glanced up at the stranger - impatiently at first, not really interested in hearing from anyone who didn't agree with her. But this woman had pretty red hair, which Nellie liked... so it made her more willing to listen after a while. Still, she wasn't going to give in easy. "I can do it. I have lots of time."

"No you don't." Rex mumbled, rubbing at his temples. Still, the woman's words had given him a little more confidence, so he tried to explain this again, taking it a little more slowly this time. "You're at daycare all day. You can't take a puppy to daycare. And can you imagine what the house will look like if you left him alone? And not just my stuff, your collections too." When he was done, he reached out and tried to nudge the girl away from the pen. "C'mon, let's go home. I'll get you some candy." Candy always worked with kids, right?

But Nellie's silvery lips were shut tight, and she was starting to tear up. Crying Rex was horrendously uncomfortable with - it made him feel rotten, and not just right now but for the rest of the day. "Nellie - "

"I don't want candy! I want a pet! He has a pet!" She pointed at the other boy - who, Rex now noticed, also had wings. He wasn't in any mood to be curious, though, and glanced around the store desperately.

"Uh.... uh - you can have a fish. How about a fish? Fish are kind of weird-looking. Maybe your friend can help you pick one?" Yes, and hopefully talk her out of getting a miniature shark or something.

The green eyed songbird remained calm at Nellie's outburst and then smiled at the mention of fish. " I know about fish" They didn't have any but he knew a bit about them " and Nero is a fish boy." Not that the silver lipped girl knew his friend but still Wren felt required to mention him. " You can't hold fish but you can teach them tricks." It was strange to think things that were so small should learn anything but some of them could learn to do really neat stuff.

Anao was immune to the other girl's tears, she'd done the crying thing herself as a kid and she still had younger siblings who did it as well, over time it's effect wore off on you. Still the little girl seemed earnest in her desire for a pet. A fish at least was easy to take care off as long as it wasn't the salt water kind. "Fish are neat" she agreed " Especially algae eater who suck spend the whole day sucking on the tank keeping it clean." The young woman had always found them to be kinda of weird but also cool at the same time. Their lives had to be so boring though.

Nellie sniffled a little, but listened. "Really?" She perked up a little when Wren mentioned the fact that you could teach fish tricks. She wondered if you could make them jump through hoops... she'd seen a lady do that with dolphins on TV once. That would be sort of fun, wouldn't it? It wasn't really the holding part she was so interested in, anyway. She just wanted something funny and weird-looking of her own. The greyhound puppy would have been great, but... a fish would come with a tank, and a tank would be cool. It would be like an awesome nightlight.

All tears forgotten, she nodded eagerly and glanced around the store until she caught a glimpse of some glowing tanks in the back. "Okay - I want a fish! Let's go!"

She ducked between a surprised store employee's legs and scrambled down the aisle. Rex made to follow - but, apparently, got lost halfway in the attempt. Or rather, he'd gotten sidetracked flirting with the startled employee. Well - she was sort of cute, with a puppy cradled in her arms and stuff. And he wasn't the most focused individual.

Wren followed the excitable girl at a more subdued pace. There were always lots of fish in tanks and not a lot of people looked at them too long so there was no need to rush. That and the young boy didn't want to risk hitting the glass tanks and splashing himself or possibly breaking them if he couldn't stop running in time.

" What kind of fish do you want?" Wren asked as he caught up with Nelly in the tank section. The fish filled aquariums lined the walls. A massive array of brightly coloured finned creatures were on displays some paying attention to the children and others ignoring them completely.

Anao rolled her eyes and the young woman moved to follow Nellie and Wren, honestly this man might only be capable of handling a fish in his house.

Nellie had to pause for a moment, looking up in awe at the stacks of softly glowing green-blue tanks. It was like standing in space - the scales of the fish all around her glimmering as they twisted and floated and dove. "Woah!" He turned to Wren excitably, like she had just found a secret portal to a land made of chocolate. "Fish are cool!"

There were so many of them, in every sort of color. Compared to this, the greyhound puppy was downright boring. "How do I know what kind I want?" She asked Wren ponderously, making her way over to one of the biggest aquariums to watch a few silly fat goldfish wriggle about. "There's so many! There's like... a hundred billion." That might have been a bit of an exaggeration, but right now everywhere Nellie looked there were fish. As many fish as stars in the universe.

There's a lot" Wren agreed, far too many to count for the young boy. "Fish like to live together so you should get some so they aren't lonely." How sad would be to live in a small tank all alone. Wren supposed it would be coo to have a bubble machine and coloured rocks and your own little castle in there but he'd much rather have friends.

" I don't know how you should pick," he admitted with a small flutter of his wings. " Maybe the ones that have the same colours as your room?" The young songbird knew little about fashion and colour co-ordinating but he knew most people tried to match things together, why not fish.
