So, I'm proud of myself. I just finished my first, quality, pair of costume/pajama pants (they're comfy enough that I'mma sleep in 'em). This is the first time I did proper seams so that the edges won't fray for a long time, and I added belt loops (you can't see them due to the shirt). The sash has now been cut to be about knee length, so I don't trip on it. I'll be making a frock coat type jacket tomorrow. biggrin Pants! The lighting is weird, and it makes it look like I have lighter streaks in my hair. I don't.

They look well made, and very comfortable. What is the costume for? Are you in a play, or do you just enjoy costuming as a hobby, or are you involved in a historical reenactment or re-creation society?

I Larp. Hehe. Geekiest thing in the world, but it's wicked fun, and really addictive.
And yes, the pants are comfy. I wear them as pajama pants right now. I'm also making a jacket, which I'll post pictures of when it's done.
Anyone interested in going to an event with me at the end of September (25-27)? It's in Ohio somewhere (can get directions) and we've got room for another person in our group.

I do SCA, so LARPing isn't necessarily the geekiest thing in the world. I'd love to see pictures when you get the whole outfit together. Tell us about it -- what sort of character is this, and is the costume just for the character's sense of fashion, or does it have other symbolism as well?
Anyway, it looks good.

I screwed up the jacket, sadly. Cut it wrong, so it hangs more like a t-shirt than a jacket. Thankfully I have extra fabric, so I can redo it with a looser fit.
I play Nero, and the current costume is for a new Gypsy character. Captain of the Drunken Wolves Adventuring Company. Me, my girlfriend (I'm finally dating a Jewish girl wink ), my ex (who's my best friend now), and possibly another person or two are going to be playing together as a band of gypsies.
Costume is mostly just for fashion and function. I like baggy pants that tuck into boots because they give good maneuverability and keep bugs from getting to my legs.

Very cool (and mazal tov on landing a nice Jewish girl!). I do encourage you to check out the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) while you're at it. There are a lot of folks who play gypsies of one stripe or another in the SCA, and a person who can sew his own garb is always appreciated. Still want to see pictures of the whole outfit when you get it altered to your satisfaction.

I'll be sure to.
Armour won't be done in time, sadly. I haven't even gotten the bloody materials yet.

Do Ren Faires count as LARP? They look like so much fun and I've wanted to go to one for awhile.

kingpinsqeezels Do Ren Faires count as LARP? They look like so much fun and I've wanted to go to one for awhile. Let us look at the differences between a Larper and a Ren Faire Actor Actors and Reenactors are people who portray someone as historically accurate as possible. They tend to wear muted colors that blend together with the rest of the troops. The weapons and armor are real, and they understand the historic significance of the person they portray. LARPers or Live action role players, portray a character that is supposed to exist in an alternative reality or universe. They wear bright, easily recognizable colors, so you can tell who's coming from miles away. They do not use real weapons nor armor and would not know historical accuracy if it came up and bit them in the face.

I see, so Ren Faires are for fun and LARPing means business? It can't all be serious! smile
Though when I see pictures I sometimes find myself thinking "Peasants couldn't wear purple. What are they thinking?"

What are they thinking?" If they were extremely rich peasants (lol! Neuveau riche much??) they could, technically, purchase purple dye. However, it takes OVER 9000 (literally) shells from the shores of the Mediterrainean to make one bottle of dye... Black was nearly as expensive, but much more readily available.

Very true, I guess merchants wore purple. They more like a middle class though, not really peasants.

That's why the NY and NJ Ren Faires have the "Sheriff's Men" in purple.

I'd fancy a big Elizabethan dress. Was that the Renaissance? Sometimes our belly dancing troupe does Ren Faires...but that doesn't really make any sense to me.
