If it stems from the mythos of H. P. Lovecraft it's welcome here.

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn."

"In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."

"That is not dead which can eternal lie.
And with strange aeons even death may die."

- The Necronomicon by the mad arab Abdul Alhazred

Cthulhu as in the short story The Call of Cthulhu written by H. P. Lovecraft in 1926 a good 40+ years before Metallica was around.

Cthulhu isn't even anywhere near the most common Old One in the Lovecraft mythos... but he IS one of the most awesome. Tentacle-headed dragon man thing for the win!

Nyarlahotep is rather interesting as well.

It's true he may not be the most mentioned in the original works, but he has become rather iconic of the mythos in the time since.

Nyarlathotep "The Crawling Chaos" is rather interesting for the utter contempt he has for humanity, perhaps especially his own cultists. He is also one of the most feared as the mouthpiece of Azathoth "The Daemon Sultan" "The Blind Idiot God" the greatest and most powerful of the elder gods.

But as is said in his title, Azathoth is the Blind Idiot God (lulled by the thin monotonous piping of a flute held in nameless paws) and as such doth not interfere in mortal affairs. Nyarlathotep does - a lot - and that is something else I find intriguing about him.

Nyarlathotep is also a conniving trickster, recall he promised Randalf Carter safe passage from Unknown Kadath only to attempt to send him to Azathoth where he would lose his mind.
