Ladies & Gentlemen!
I thought I would try and clear a few things up about atheists.
First of all, we do not hate everyone who believes in a god. lol
Secondly, most of us will get into an argument with people who try and shove a bible up our arse. However! I honestly believe most atheists will try and get into a formal debate, rather then a fist-to-face debate.
Now then, there is no one direct reason as to why some people choose to be atheist. There are many different reasons; it is a personal choice.
Next, a typical assumption is that we are “lazy”, or “unmotivated.” Not entirely true. We may be unmotivated to “find the light/path/whatever” but it’s a bit deeper then that. It's not that we aren't motivated, it's that we have already made our choices about higher power/forces. That choice is that it doesn't exist.
As far as “lazy” goes, I strongly disagree with that. I’ve done my fair share of research. No I don’t go to church every Sunday, or read the bible every day. But are any of those things really hard? If I did believe in god, I’d sure as heck want to go say thank you and all that jazz. I wouldn’t look at it like work though.
It also takes work to uphold my belief in that no higher force/power exists. Atheists don’t go out and convert people. (some do I guess, but you can’t really convert to something that’s not considered a religion. But that’s a whole different topic.) Subsequently, other religions do go out and convert. So, it takes work to make people accept you. That goes for anything you believe in.
Finally, this is just to clarify a few things. I do not speak for everyone. I just wanted to take note that some things people might assume may not be true.
Thoughts, Questions? Agreements, Disagreements? biggrin

No, but to most Christians, you're going to Hell... no matter how good of a person you are.

For we are GOD'S workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which GOD prepared in advance for us to do. We are not saved because we are good, we all have a sin nature. We have the freedom to do good or bad, its called free will.

Agreements, Disagreements?I believe the Bible is the inspired word of GOD and in HIM I believe. HE said every knee should bow and every tongue should confess that JESUS CHRIST is LORD. Phillippians 2:9-11. So regardless to how anyone of us feel about beliefs or non-belief , the word gives good instruction for my life and well being. I have not found any harmful instructions for my life in the word; I'm also satisfied that I don't believe in mysef to the extent of disregarding my maker, as I certainly can not do all the things he has done for me with my natual and limited abilities. biggrin

James 2:24-25 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? We are saved through the grace of God.

She said I'm going to hell. Well I don't believe in hell. So I replied, Well it's not like she's going to heaven. BECAUSE to me, Heaven isn't real. I wasn't saying that she personaly can't go to heaven, I was saying no one can because to me it doesn't exist.
Did everyone get that? xd

*sigh* When I saw this thread, I was afraid this might happen; people jumping up and saying, "But you're going to Hell because you don't believe!" rolleyes
It's like... We're making an effort to say that we're really not out to start fights with people, and what happens? We get jumped.
Let me just ask you this. Why should we believe what your Bible says? How about the Torah, or the Qur’an, or Hindu texts, or the teachings of Buddha? Or Egyptian mythology or Paganism, for that matter? You're not the only one who claims to be the word of God (gods, Nature, whatever), and threatens with Hell (judgment, smiting, whatever).
Oh well. At any rate.
I had never actually heard the "lazy" or "unmotivated" insult before! I've certainly heard a lot of "immoral" and "Nazi" though. Neither of which are true, of course.

RubyLight I have a question. Do you believe in the existence of the soul or some kind of afterlife? Don't worry I'm not a hater. Some of my friends are athiests. wink While I agree it is very tempting to look at human accomplishments, range of emotions, and intelligence, and conclude that there must be some kind of ghost in the machine that makes us who we are... I can't do it. The truth is that everything that we think of as making humans unique and arguments for a soul can be seen in more rudimentary forms in animals. Generally, they're just a step away or two from exhibiting the same behavior we do, the main difference being that different facets of us are found in different species, and our intelligence is all rolled into one species. As for an afterlife, again, it is very tempting to believe that there's something after this to right all wrongs and some way in which we continue... but there just isn't any evidence for it, and especially if you don't believe in a soul, it's hard to believe in an afterlife. That's what, to me, makes it so important that we are good people now! We have to change the world to be a better place and make life better for the people around us, because there (probably) won't be a second chance to do it. I know that's a long answer to a short question. sweatdrop
