Unfortunatly for Bobby, this is probably the best thing for Yates at this point. Naturally he's not happy about it, but at least he's doing this with some class. Some drivers in the past *coughmayfieldhackcough* have gone out and verbally bashed their car owners publically. You gotta respect Bobby for keeping a relitivly cook head about this.
At the same time, you have to respect Doug Yates. The only reason that team is surviving at this point is because Paul Menard's dad knows how to use a checkbook. A change needed to be made. With Erik Darnell showing some potential for the future, Yates needs some fresh young blood to help attract sponsors and help the team get better.
I think for next season, if the 96 stays with Yates, it's gonna be a shared ride. Probably with Bobby Labonte, Erik Darnell, and anyone else who can attract some kind of sponsorship. Hopefully Menard stays with them too. As bad as he's running, he has a full season of sponsorship no matter what he does. And having that kind of backing no matter who is driving, is good for research and development.

When I first found out he was leaving Gibbs, I couldn't believe it. I think one of the reasons he left though was once he was finished driving, he wanted to take some kind of position working within Petty Enterprises, but that obviously fell apart...

Update: Looks like Bobby will be in the #71 TRG Racing Chevrolet at Atlanta this weekend. Possibly for the other 6 races he won't be in the 96.

He should never have left gibbs. I'm not a big fan of the new gibbs racing, I liked the old 2003 team. Chevy and 2 great talented drivers. I think it was a performance deal with the way the end of 04 went for labonte.

I think it was a performance deal with the way the end of 04 went for labonte. Too be honest though...03 was only a soso year for them... it was the 99,00,02 seasons with pontiac and of coarse 08 with toyota where they really did the most. They actually had a slow start with the switch to chevy back in 03...Now as for Bobby... this move ..actaully to me was a win win for everyone around..David gets to shop around... Eric finally gets the shot he deserves...Robby gets another driver for a race, Bill gets a lil rest with his back, gibbs will have a good possible 4th car in my mind, and Bobby gets to have fun with Slugger once more and he is finally back in a chevy and if he plays his cards right he may get that road coarse ride once more again..its been a few years since his first year at petty I think...

That's kind of funny both Labonte and gilliland had top 20 finishes after the switch.
