The red and white kirin stood under the trees, his dark tail swishing, lost in day dreams. A breeze whispered through the branches flicking the leaves tauntingly at him. Spence eye'd the fluttering leaves, then answered the challenge by thrusting his barbed horn up through the tree branches. Hooking a thin limb with his horn, he pulled it down just far enough to make it snap. Pulling his horn free, he reached up and grabbed the taunting leaves in his teeth and chewed.

His eyes wandered to the other few males in his herd that he'd come to call family. His heart felt sad for the real family that he never got to know.

She stepped carefully around the low limbs the best she could as she came around another bend in her normal path through the forest. Small feathered wings pressed close to her white and floral colored sides, her lavender/blue eyes watching the shadows about her. Lecura was far from the day dreamer, she was known as a prissy witch by a certain mare that she still thought as a filly. Shaking out her dark green mane, she stopped as she heard something within the distance. Well within hearing range of course, the snapping of a branch wasn't that hard to ignore. Altering her course she came up close to where the strange red and white stallion was standing. Silently watching him a moment, taking in the barbs on his horn and the red how it splotched over his body much like blood.

"And just what are you doing?" she asked outright stepping from the shadows, even though she stuck out against them. "Did that branch ever do anything to you?" Head tilting some, she held herself straight, not looking to let herself slack a bit.

Jerked out of his thoughts by the unexpected question, Spence raised his head defensively. Seeing a white female kirin with an unusual floral pattern, he relaxed slightly. The small band of males rarely encountered females in their wanderings unless they were near a herd. Spence's ears twitched, checking for any sounds that she was not alone.

He noted the slight challenge in her voice. Rather than being put on the defensive by it, he was curious as to why. "The branch hadn't been offensive in any way, but a guy has to eat doesn't he?"

Lecura didn't run with a herd, she was just a roaming mare on her own. True she could have found a herd to join, but there weren't that many out now a days and she didn't want to just leap into something and regret it later. Shaking her head a little, she moved off to one side, minding to remain a 'safe' distance away from him. She wasn't looking to really get into a confrontation with anyone, but it could surely happen. Normally did when she was involved. Glancing to the snapped branch she looked back to him questioningly.

"Seems like a lot of damage for just getting something to eat. Surely one of the 'lower' branches could have been better?" She asked feeling more pity for the tree then the male and his 'need to eat' excuse. "What were you doing out here anyways? And don't tell me that you were just eating. It looked like much more then that."

Raising a brow a little, she looked the stallion over still. It had been a while since she had seen another Kirin, not that she minded her solitude. Basically she preferred it more then company, specially in the warmer seasons. Breaking her own thoughts, her attention went back to the red and white stallion before her. Her expression, still questioning.

Spence watched her moved. The way she held herself with confidence led him to guess that maybe she didn't run with a herd. She didn't seem to be challenging him about being in her territory, but she did seem a little too defensive about the tree.

"The leaves on the lower branches may have been easier to reach, but the leaves higher up have better flavor," he replied. "As for what I'm doing here, my friends and I are just passing through." Spence wondered if she traveled alone, if his guess about that was right, because she chose to or if she was cast out. "And what might you be doing here?"

Lecura watched him as he watched her. She did hold herself strong, one had to when they were out here all alone. Well she wasn't completely alone, she did have Nymph. Where ever he went to anyways, the little critter was always leaving her to do something else. Head turning to one side she glanced back to the tree. The leaves on the higher branches did seem to have better color then the lower ones, so perhaps that was true, but there had to be better ways then braking limbs to get at them.

"Perhaps that is true, but surely you could do better then braking the branch." She said more of a suggestion then anything else. "As for what I'm doing out here, traveling. Heading towards what I hope will be warmer grounds when winter comes and food is less... appealing." She glanced at the ground, knowing well it would be covered soon, she could feel it in her bones. "I hate the cold, but that doesn't stop it from coming." Muttered, but was loud enough for anyone to hear, peachy...

Nostrils flaring, Spence sniffed the air without lifting his head. "Yes, the time of falling leaves is near." His blood red tail casually flicking off pesky insects of his back. "I travel with friends. Scout is older and wiser so he chooses where we go."

"If you don't like the cold, why do you travel?" he asked. "Why not stay in a place where the cold doesn't reach?" Spence reached out and grabbed another leaf off the tree as he waited for her reply.

Her ears flicked back for a moment as she watched this stallion. So he thought traveling with friends was better then traveling alone? Yea she had misheard him, Lecura was or had been so lost within her own thoughts to have only heard the tail end of his statement. Thus coming up with her own conclusion at best.

"I travel, alone, cause I can't seem to stand being around some that act like you." She huffed, small wings fanning themselves out, feathers making a slight grinding sound. "I will go where I please and not be held back by a herd's stupidity."

Oh dear, that had don't it, she had gone over the edge about herd. She hadn't seen too many, but the small ones that she had seen, they weren't what she would consider a herd. Always bickering over one thing or another, a couple being peaceful. Others not so much, she was getting tired of it all. Shaking her head, Lecura turned her head away from the stallion, raising a hoof she started headed away from him.

"Do as you please, just don't bother asking stupid questions. They only get stupid answers from the ones you ask." She muttered flicking her evergreen tail as she headed away.

Surprised by her quick change of attitude, Spence trotted after her. "Wait!"

Falling into step beside her, he asked, "How can you call my friends stupid when you haven't even met them?" Feeling a little confused about what might have changed her mood, he did agree with her apparent feelings about herds. He'd hated leaving his sister behind when he'd chosen to leave the herd they'd grown up in, but he could not abide their accusations any longer.

"Have I done something to offend you?"

A lavender/blue eye turned in its socket to look at the red and white male, whom fell into step beside her as she headed away from where they had just been standing. Her small wings folding themselves back at her shoulders, though they gave very little comfort. Pulling to a stop, her head turning to face the stallion, eyes narrowing a bit.

You were not the one to offend me. There were others, long before your time. Possibly long before your small band was created. I was once in a herd, one that marveled all others." She shook her head, "That was until something happened and most were killed. Others driven into hiding. Me, I was left alone to forge my own way into this bleak life. stay with your herd if you like. Goddess Bless nothing happens to it." Turning her face away from him, she just stood there, eyes closed and ears flattened back.

"I understand," he said simply. His indignation at her calling his friends stupid, softened. It would seem that she had good reason to be defensive.

"I was alone when I hatched from my egg. No one to welcome me into what turned out to be a cruel world." Spence glanced at her closed eyes hoping that his own story would let her know that he understood. "I found one other from my clutch that had survived." Sadness of missing his sister crept into his voice. "My sister spoke of death and destruction. She believes our parents to be dead."

After a pause, he added, "But I choose to believe that they are still alive... somewhere."

An eye cracked itself open as Lecura looked back toward the stallion. An ear rotating to listen more effectively, she had heard what was being said, just didn't want to make sure that she had heard right. Shaking her head some, Lecura retained her mask.

"If you have looked this long and found nothing. Why keep looking at all?" she asked with a slight huff. "My herd is all but dead, parents, siblings and everything. I say get over it, what's done if done. There's no turning back the clock."

Lecura had been on the wrong hoof since she had first met the stallion and seemed to be keeping to it. Walking further away from him again, she headed towards the denser parts of the forests where the winds failed to reach at times. It was here that she could reside for a while before moving on again... Though with a herd of stallions around, it didn't seem like she were going to stay as long as normal.

Spence watched her walk away. He would have tried to explain why there might be hope, but he could tell by her body language that she didn't want to hear it.

He turned and walked back the way he'd come, feeling that he failed in some way. Maybe breaking some more branches would make him feel better.
