Okay, so.

I finally decided it was time to finish XII.

My main party is Ashe, Balthier, and Penelo, all level 66.
Vaan, Fran, and Basch are all level 49.

So I beat Gabranth with Basch and co., and it's pretty easy.

I kill the two forms of Vayne with Ashe and the others.
Again, it's not that bad.

So, I go into the third fight thinking, 'Yeah, okay, this'll deff. be harder, but I can handle it. After all, I'm eleven levels above the boss.' (According to my guide he's like level 55.)

First part's pretty easy. Sure, I have to heal a lot, but I got enough MP to handle it.

And then it comes.

The magic barrier.

Before hand, I was unable to take Faith and Haste off of The Undying.

I deal for a while, but then he switches out the magic barrier for a physical.

And he delivers my a** to me on a silver platter.

I don't know what happened. All of a sudden Penelo and Balthier are dead. I have enough time to bring back Penelo before TU kills Ashe, too. And then starts a chain where I'm reviving, dying, reviving, dying. I bring in the weaker of the six, and the same story happens.

By the grace of God, I get Ashe, Penelo, and Balthier back. I get them hasted, protected, shelled, and healed. They do some quickenings, using all their MP.

And then The freakin' Undying is immune to not just magic, but physical attacks, too.

He casts something with 'Tetra' in the title, and I'm dead.
Including Vaan, Fran, and Basch, also, since they all died a long time ago.

I was not expecting this from XII.

Tell me, what should I do so I never ever ever have to go through those battles again just to die on the last one?
I thank you in advance.

Ok heres what I did it might take some time but with this I never died against a boss. Have all of your people the same level. Except for one )Vaan in my case) who is ten levels above the rest of them. He is your tank who will be alive after everyone else has died so he will be the one to rez your dead party memebers. With all of your party members the same level you will not have to worry about your people dieing becuase someone just as strong to take their place. Gambits I only have two. attack party leaders targets and cast curaja after party member falls below 30%. Last of all NEVER use your quickinings that takes away your MP that you need for healing and buffing. Follow these you should be able to make it out alive and victourious.

Ehh, I honestly don't remember my own battle well enough to give any personal insight... Only that I wanted to stab the friggin' palings' eyes out. Here's what GameFAQs has to offer...

Quote:
Health points: 65,000
Level: 55
License Points Given: 0
Steals: None

Location: Sky Fortress Bahamut (Cannon Superstructure)
Difficulty: 7/10

Recommended Level: Level 54 or higher recommended, but can be done at lower
levels if you wish to.

Recommended Gambits
- Ally: Any - Arise
- Ally: HP under 60% - Use Curaga
- Foe: Party leader's target - Attack
- Foe: Status = Bravery - Cast Dispel
- Foe: Status = Faith - Cast Dispel
- Ally: Any - Cast Shellga
- Ally: Any - Cast Shell

Battle Strategy: Dispel his positive status effects and cast Protectga and
Shellga on your party. The Undying uses "Piercing" magicks, which basically
mean they pierce through the Reflect status effect, so don't try that. The
Undying can't be affected by any negative status effects, so don't try. His
"Divine Sword", attack does around 1,500+ damage to a single person.
"Megaflare", does 1,000+ damage to all targets in range. As soon as he/it
casts a positive status effect on himself, quickly Dispel it unless he puts
up a magick resistant Paling on himself.

After he loses some more health points, he/it'll use "Ascension", which does
around 1,500+ damage to all targets in range. He/it'll also use "Gigaflare
Sword", which is a more powerful version of "Ascension". Recast your
positive status effects if they wear out, as they'll help yuo a lot through
this final boss fight. It's the last fight in the game, so feel free to use
all of your Hi-ethers, Elixiers, and your Megalixirs, and even Gil Toss.
He'll eventually put up another Paling which makes him immune to all damage.
You'll need to wait for it to wear down, so recast some more positive status
effects during this time. When it wears down, pummel is a** in the ground
and defeat the final boss in the game.

You had to admit, it was fun.

BOSS: The Undying - HP: 228299 - LV: 55
---------------------------------------

The lack of HP bar for this boss makes the fight not only difficult, but
confusing. You never really know what's going on unless you pay attention.
The Undying will give clues as to its HP level by its shielding actions.

When the boss is half dead it will bring up a shield that protects it from
physical attacks. You'll have to move on to Magick at this point. Flare,
Holy, whatever you've got. The shield wears off after a period of time so
don't feel obligated to waste all your Magick.

Here's something you can do during this time: cast Protectga, Shellga and
Bubble on every member of your party. That will give you a huge advantage.
Another thing to do is to keep an eye out for when the boss casts spells like
Faith and Bravery. Use Dispel Magick when this happens, otherwise the boss'
attacks are going to increase in power by quite a bit.

The majority of The Undying's attacks are big epic-looking explosion-esque
blasts that just... do damage to every member of your party. With the scope
of the spell animations you might expect it to tear a hole in the fabric of
space, but no, you're basically just looking at about 1000 - 2000 damage to
every party member. Nothing much if you cast Bubble, and especially so if you
have Curaja Gambits on everyone.

Here's something very important to keep in mind: the game is over, you are
done, and there is absolutely NO reason to hang onto ANY item in your
inventory. Use Elixirs and Ethers like basic Potions if you need to.

When the boss casts Dispelga, get those Protectga and Shellga spells back up!

+----------------------------------------------------------------+

I'm suddenly reminded of how awesome Vagrant Story was thanks to how The
Undying moves around the Bahamut much like the setup of the final boss of
Vagrant Story. Oh, how this game pleases me!

I would recommend that you perform +---------------------------------------+
most of your attacks on him manually | Recommended Gambits |
(mainly for spells) since the queue |=======================================|
will not allow you to cure or Arise | Ally: any (>) Arise |
while a powerful spell is being | Ally: HP < 50% (>) Curaja |
casted. Dispel him of his status | Foe: status = Faith (>) Dispel |
enhancements at the start. Set up a | Foe: status = Bravery (>) Dispel |
Protect shield via Protectga right | Foe: party leader's target (>) Attack |
now and this will save your party a +---------------------------------------+
bunch. Run up to the boss and start
to hammer away with physical attacks, Flares, and Scathes. No Holy! He takes
very minimal damage from elemental attacks, which means that he will be strong
versus any elemental weapon so keep that in mind. The Undying will start the
battle most likely with Divine Sword, which will do around 3000+ damage on the
target. Be sure to set up a Curaja gambit since he can hit you from a distance
with a physical attack that will take between 2000 - 3000 damage per hit; this
is why I also recommend the Protect shield. His long distance attack is very
sneaky since there is little animation for it - this is his primary attack.
Piercing -aga is another of his attacks that will hit for 2000+ damage - this
is a more powerful version of all the -aga elemental attacks, hence the name.
Megaflare will hit all party members for around 2000+ damage. He will mainly
use Megaflare only at the beginning of this battle. If at any time he starts
to get the best of you within any of the below phases, use a Megalixir or
Elixir. You are at the final battle and there is no reason to save anything.

He will use Chain Magick to allow him himself to cast magick even faster then
set up Faith afterwards. Dispel Faith immediately if you can! He will set up
a Magick Shield making him vulnerable to all magicks right after the casting of
Faith. Cast Shellga immediately after dispelling Faith. He will start to use
Ascension around this time to take off 2500+ damage from all party members.
The Undying will use Dispelga to take away any status enhancements the party
may have then use constant Piercing -aga magick. He will likely use Dispel
again, but be sure to keep shell up!

For his next trick he will cast Enrage on himself to chain attacks greatly then
will cast Bravery on himself followed by a Physical Shield that will make him
immune to physical damage. Set up a Protect shield immediately and cast Haste
or Hastega! Turn off all attacks gambits or simply turn off all gambits and
cure manually. He will use Gigaflare Sword that will hit for around a whopping
3000+ damage to all party members. His attacks are extremely rapid at this
stage, so a Protect shield is mandatory! Hit him with a Flare attack ONLY if
all party members are healed and they have a Protect shield since you will not
be able to heal while Flare is being casted - the queue will not allow it.
Even though Shock takes off less, it is really the best spell to use around
this time since it doesn't have a long attack animation like Flare. He will
likely mix in another Ascension attack before his physical shield wears off.

Pound on him with more physical attacks and spells while you can once the
shield wears off. He will attack with his usual long distance physical attacks
and use Gigaflare Sword eventually. The Undying will soon set up a Perfect
Defense Shield that will make him immune to all types of attacks both magick
and physical. Like the battle with Pandemonium from earlier, you must simply
wait this out while trying to survive. During this stage, he will perform his
physical attacks, big attacks, and will use Teraflare to cause around 3500+
damage. The good thing about Teraflare is that it means that he is almost
dead! When his Perfect Defense fades, pummel him with magick and physical
attacks until he dies. His defense will increase greatly like most bosses. He
will use Dispelga constantly at this point if you set up Protect and Shell
shields, but I would advise you to keep casting them.

If this boss manages to beat your party badly because of low maximum HP, try
setting up a "Self (>) Bubble" gambit on each character and it will make your
party stand up to his attacks better. Bubble can be bought from the Clan
Provisioner after the "Ward of Justice" rank is achieved. You can also try
equipping Bubble Belts.

Attacks: Bravery, Faith, Piercing Dispelga, Piercing Holy,
Piercing Firaga, Piercing Thundaga, Piercing Blizzaga,
Enrage, Force Barrier, Ascension, Gigaflare Sword,
Perfect Defense, Divine Sword, Teraflare, Magick
Barrier, Megaflare, Chain Magick
Notes: Haste

Have the leader dispel Undying's Haste and have other characters
use Expose and Shear to weaken its defenses.

As this is the game's final battle, toss your Megalixirs and
Elixirs or even use Gil Toss, as there will be no excuse to save
them...

Unlike other boss battles, the HP gauge will not be reflected on
the screen. It start of Divine Sword attack which deal around
2000+ HP damage to one ally. Its attacks deals between 1500 to
2500 depending on your armor and levels. It will use the Piercing
versions of level 3 magicks and they deal around 1500~2000+ damage.
Thus using Curaja or Renew is essential as the Undying can follow
up its magick and attacks fast with Chain Magick and Enrage skills
respectively.

Once its HP drops to 50%, it start to use Faith (dispel it before
it followed up with its Magick Shield) and he will followed up
with Ascension that deals 2500 HP on all allies. After the use of
Ascension, the Magick Shield will be gone.

Once its HP drops to 25%, it start to cast Piercing Dispelga (
make sure all your characters are equipped with Bubble belt, so it
will remains and follow it up with Enrage + Bravery. Dispel
Bravery as it will follow up with the Gigaflare sword which deals
a whopping 2500~3000 HP damage to all allies. Once its HP drops
to critical (unlike other enemies, it does not glow in red), it
will erect its Perfect Defense. This will be your cue that the
battle is going end soon. Cast Renew, Protectga and Shellga on
all allies. It will unleash its final attack - Megaflare or
Teraflare, which deals 3500~4000 HP to all allies. Cast Arise
on any fallen characters. Keep on attacking and you will be able
to finish it off...

----------------------------- PLACE OF ENCOUNTER ------------------------------
Sky Fortress Bahamut / Cannon Superstructure; Save 09, BEMC.
------------------------------ GET READY! FIGHT! ------------------- party lv99
How can he fly with all that crap on his back? For the equipment have the
following: Rubber Suit, White Mask, Bubble Belt (he doesn't inflict any status
changes), Flame Shield, Ice Shield, Ensanguined Shield. Boss fight is divided
into five stages and I will do my best to guide you thru all of them. Since he
has Dispelga, I wouldn't bother with too many buffs unless you wield equipment
that grants you such statuses.
STAGE 1, 100% > HP > 80% - Battle begins! Boss will pelt you mainly with Divine
Sword and regular physical attack, with lv3 magics mixed in. Take care to
switch equipment in time to reduce or null the damage - Dispel his Haste as
well. Have Curaja or Renew gambit set with HP < 60% just in case, and begin
bashing into Undying's HP reserves.
STAGE 2, 80% > HP > 60% - Congrats, you've knocked off 20% of its HP. Battle
heats up with Megaflare, so equip shields with high EVA and you may block the
attack. Next Megaflare is incoming after 12 commands, and the rest of attacks
are still the same as 1st stage.
STAGE 3, 60% > HP > 40% - Here's where things will start to heat up. Boss will
use Chain Magick (begin casting Dispel!), follow with Faith (hope that your
Dispel removes it in time), then Magick Barrier and finish it up with Ascension
- like with Megaflare, equip shields with high EVA and you may block the
attack. Boss loses Divine Sword and will now start a spamathon of Piercing
menagerie. This is the time to equip White Mask, Rubber Suit, Flame Shield or
Ice Shield (depends on what he'll throw at you). Physicals are NOT used, so DEF
is unimportant at the moment. Ascension and Megaflare will be coming like this
- Ascension, 12 commands, Megaflare, 20 commands, Ascension, repeat. Take care
to equip high EVA shields for these attacks. While you're being showered with
magic attacks, bash away next 20% of Undying's HP.
STAGE 4, 40% > HP > 20% - You're almost there! This stage begins with Enrage,
then Bravery (Dispel it!), Force Barrier and Gigaflare Sword (high EVA shield).
Megaflare is no longer used, but Gigaflare and Ascension will be switching
places after each 52 commands (with 26 commands pause between them). No magic
is cast during this stage, so up your DEF and buff yourself up. Either cast
magic at Undying or wait two minutes for Paling to dissipate and then round him
up into critical HP.
STAGE 5, HP < 20% - The final stage! Perfect Defense is immediately used, and
you get bombed with Gigaflare Sword (last time it is used). Boss continues the
assault with mix of physicals and magic attacks (remember to equip accordingly)
- beware or Gigaflare after next 8 commands. With good shields you can block
even this attack for no damage at all. Gigaflare is used again after next 32
commands, but by then Undying will long be history in the making.

I didn't have too much trouble with that form.

Once he put the barriers up I simply started to use quickenings or whatever you call them.

Elixirs, ethers, ect are great.

Dang. Thanks, guys. XD

@William: Yeah, I think I will get the lower of the three even with my other people. Maybe level the higher guys up even more.

@Ravenwolf: Wow. Lol. Thanks. XD Yeah, I'll have to edit my gambits a bit. And buy Arise. That would have been extremely helpful. Ehehe. sweatdrop

@Azial: If I had had more elixirs, that would have been extremely helpful. I guess I'll get some more before diving in again. XD
