The only thing I want to get my b/f for Christmas is a ferret! He had ferrets when he was younger, and they're practically his fave animal! But because of where he lives he can't- it's illegal to own ferrets where I live and in surrounding cities... So even though I've found the perfect ferret that isn't even a year old, I can't because even if it was for me I wouldn't be allowed to have it because my dad hates them! Oh it's so unfair! And his dad would flip if I got him like, a fish or something ("No more f***ing pets! That's final!") So I'm screwed... And he'd love one so much... cry
Is there anyway to get my dad to warm up to the idea of getting a ferret? I was thinking about volunteering at a shelter also, but he doesn't want to drive me back and forth, and I'm far too young to get my license. sad

Perhaps you could pinpoint the reason he dislikes ferrets. My mum absolutely hated ferrets (she thought they looked like rats.. gonk ) but my beloved brother got me one for my b-day, and after a while, she became a ferret fanatic. If I ever ask about the times when she hated ferrets, she pretends to not know what I'm talking about. whee Perhaps you could leave articles about ferrets around the house, and the benefits of having them. Or make a chart of their good and bad traits, or, (if he's the stricter type) write an essay on why you should have a ferret. However, if it IS illegal to own one, I wouldn't sugest getting one. Not to be a party pooper. sad

He hates them because he says they're smelly. Everywhere I go around here where they sell ferrets, there's a sign in their cage that says "De-glanded". So I don't know what he's talking about. rolleyes

The pets are not smelly themselves, it's their surroundings mostly. If you clean their cases often I think it'd be allright. At least this was the case with my hamsters so I guess it applies to ferret's too.
Where do you live? I have never heard of a place where ferrets are outlawed. Or do you mean that it's ilegael in a specific building or something? Why is it outlawed?

Dad says it's because of what it would do to the economy: Ferrets ae like weasels- they don't just kill for food, they also kill for fun. He believes that if I had a ferret and it got out, there would be no more songbirds in the area.
And I spoke to my b/f. He says that my dad's full of crap. All I need to do now is talk his dad into it. I don't understand his dad. The oldest son is allowed to have a cat, but after they got Pup, the dog, he said "No more." But when he got rid of Pup and said "No more animals," and my b/f's sisters got another cat, that was okay. But can Jason get a pet? No. It's really unfair. But alot of it has to do with the family dynamics that are a bit too complicated to get into as of this moment, so I'll leave it at my boyfriend is the outcast. *nods* But I still think it's uuber unfair...

You can have their scent glands removed, but keep in mind that they use the ferret-smell as a base for most colognes! rofl

Do you live in California? I've heard ferrets are illegal/frowned upon there. They think they're going to go out and kill things, but ferrets have been domesticated for so long, they have no idea what the hell they'd be doing. They wouldn't survive for very long outside of a human home. They've been bred to live on pellets. They'd be digging all day hoping for a pellet, not killing to live.
Also, you can get a ferret de-scented, but keep in mind that the scent glands can and will grow back. The smell isn't just the glands, it's also the oil in their skin that sticks to the fur. It's a natural occurence, and unfortunately it's one reason why people get rid of their ferrets; they don't realize the reponsibility it requires.

Actually, I live frighteningly near Hazleton, PA. Ferrets are illegal there also.
Ferrets will kill a small bird or something just to play with the corpse. Kinda gross, but it's just a thing they do. 3nodding

Yeah. I think it's totally creepy.
I got mah b/f's dad to "think about" getting a ferret! He's reluctant because he believes they'll steal anything they can get their hands on that's shiny and hide it somewhere. lol! razz
