It was that time of year again. Peeking out from the branches of every tree, Fariel could see the first few hints of yellowing leaves. He hadn't noticed them before even though he lived right in the forest. But there had been hints around him he hadn't noticed. The wind was chilly today, and birds were flying in v formation over his head. He glanced up at them. Sometimes he wished he could fly, like his mother and siblings. If he could, he would follow the birds south.
Deciding to move on Far took a relaxed pace, weaving through the trees until he emerged in a clearing. A bubbling stream cut straight through so Fariel stopped and took a drink, dipping his blue hooves in and watching how the water flowed around them.

A green mare wandered slowly around the edges of a great forest. She lifted her head from time to time, to scan the treetops and watch the sun reflect the hints of new color on the leaves. A breeze continued to blow, reminding all of the upcoming cooler weather.
Viper sighed softly. She loved the colors of fall, but dreaded the colder days and nights that came. Continuing on, Viper soon heard the sounds of water nearby and headed toward the faint sound. Listening carefully, Viper could tell that it was a small brook bubbling its way through the forest. What suprised her though, was that she could now see a stallion standing in the water and watching it.
Unsure of the other horse, Viper stopped in her tracks to watch this stallion. She only wondered why he looked sad.

Through the natural sounds of the forest Fariel thought he heard something out of place. He flicked his ears towards the sound curiously. Fariel wandering around so much that he rarely came across anyone. When the sound didn't come again he looked up and spotted Viper for the first time. The green mare seemed perfectly suited for the forest. She looked almost like she could hide in the trees if she wanted to. If it hadn't been the for the pink flower in her air, he might've looked past her completely.
"Hello?" He blinked at her, wondering why she had stopped. Maybe she wanted a drink? He took a few steps away from it and motioned to her. "Don't mind me... I'm not stopping here long."

Viper had begun to take in the rest of her surroundings when the she heard movement from the stallion's general direction. Lifting her head she met his eyes directly. Her ears flicked back slightly as he watched her. She almost jumped when he finally ended up speaking to her.
After regaining herself, Viper finally managed a response. "I didn't come here for a drink. I love watching the other creatures stop by the brook. It's a very peaceful place to rest." A smile crept over her face as she sighed softly. The breeze was fluctuating, but it was so soft, and so faint, that she enjoyed the feeling of it weaving around her and through her mane.

Fariel smiled a little. "Yeah, it's peaceful here. It's kind of quiet though, with the birds leaving and all." He looked at the sky, which was empty now. "Do you ever wonder where the birds go? They fly south and always come back... Do you think they go somewhere nice, or do they just keep flying?"
Then he shook his head a little. "Sorry, you must think I'm kind of strange. I think about these kinds of things a lot." He almost said it was because he didn't really have anything better to do, but he didn't.

Viper smiled kindly as the stallion apologized. "You don't need to apologize, it's perfectly fine to think about the birds. I think it's amazing that they can just fly and go wherever they wish." She lifted her head to gaze longily at the sky for a moment. "But then again, I prefer to keep all my hooves on the ground." She laughed a little as she finished speaking.

Fariel had to chuckle a little. "Yeah, it's pretty amazing that they can fly. So can my mother and siblings, actually." He looked at his clearly wingless back. "Though I can't, like my father. I don't think I'd like it either." He nodded a little, looking distant for a moment.
Then he got an idea, his eyes lighting up. "Hey, have you been to the lake? It's not too far from here, and there might be some birds." He grinned, looking excited to do something.

"Sure," Viper smiled at the stallion's sudden cheer. "I'm Viper by the way." She added, realizing that she hadn't introduced herself. She squeezed throught some bushes and avoided some roots as she walked toward the stream.
"Lead the way," She nodded, now curious about the lake. I wonder why I haven't seen it, she thought as she waited for the stallion to show her the way.

Oh right, Fariel hadn't introduced himself either. "Nice to meet you Viper," he said, lowering his head politely as she came to the stream. "I'm Fariel, but you can call me Far if you'd like."
Resuming a calm demeanor he looked ahead. "It's a short walk from here, through these trees. There's a path we can take." He started walking, leaving the stream behind him. "Then we'll have to go down a hill."

Viper followed Fariel, but watched their surroundings. She may want to return to the lake, so she had to remember the way. "Is this path hidden?" She asked absent-mindedly. She was focusing on an odd bunch of plants gathered not too far off from where they were walking.

"Not really. Deer often come this way. It's pretty easy to see where to go." Of course that meant other creatures knew about it too, including predators. He kept his eyes sharp and listened carefully, in case something carnivorous was coming their way.
"Some poisonous plants grow along here too. I wouldn't recommend tasting anything strange," he said too, noticing how she was looking at some odd plants, ones he didn't recognize. He had learned from experience not to eat stuff he wasn't sure about.

Snapping out of her engrossment, Viper noticed Fariel's concern. Smiling kindly she replied, "I wasn't going to taste them. They just looked unique." She shrugged, trotting to catch up with the stallion. "You'll find that I am very fascinated with plants." She chuckled lightly.

"Really? I only know about dangerous plants out of necessity," Fariel admitted with a light shake of his head. It wouldn't do him any good to eat something bad when he was all alone and away from any chance of help. "I've never really thought that much about them." Now though, he was paying more attention. Then he smiled a little. "If you see something interesting tell me about it?"
Looking ahead Fariel slowed down a bit. "You can see the lake now. See how the water shines in the sun?" They broke from the trees on a the peak of a small hill, the path continuing down to the shore of the tiny lake.

"Sure," Viper nickered kindly. She continued to gaze around at the surrounding plants, she noticed some that had herbal qualities, some poisonous, and some plants she had yet to learn about. Hearing the hooffalls slow before her, Viper barely managed not to run into Fariel. She raised her head, ears pricked as the lake came into view. Everything glistened with small specks of light that scattered from the lake's surface. "It's absolutely beautiful," She sighed happily. "Race?" With a whinny of pure delight, the mare ran down the hill, slowing as she drew closer to the shore.

Fariel caught her excitement, and with a smile he galloped after her, tossing his mane a little in the wind it created. He didn't try to pass Viper, instead running alongside her until she began to slow as they approached the shore. Far didn't stop until he reached the sand. He dug his hooves into it experimentally. It was gritty, but soft.
"Ahh feel that breeze!" Fariel raised his head towards the water, letting the cool wind coming off of it caress his mane. There weren't any birds around, at least that he could see, but he wasn't disappointed. He continued to smile. "It's just right."
