Above all else... This thread is the perfect spot for your fat-positive media; photos, paintings, videos, poetry, whatever! Post it up and share it here!
To start things off: Big Girl You are Beautiful! by Mika. I heart this song so hard. Also, the image below always strikes me. I love it and it makes me a little sad? nostalgic? touched? I don't know. Something.

may you know joy

I love that image, too! I saved it after you had it in your sig or something a while back.
While we're on the topic of hips, I'll share my favorite poem that I found in my poetry class's textbook a long while ago and memorized for points.
Homage to my hips -Lucille Clifton
these hips are big hips they need space to move around in. they don't fit into little pretty places, these hips are free hips. they don't like to be held back. these hips have never been enslaved, they go where they want to go they do what they want to do. these hips are mighty hips. these hips are magic hips. i have known them to put a spell on a man and spin him like a top!
I love how it feels like her enthusiasm for and love of her hips are growing as the poem progresses.
And I don't know if this counts, but I love the show What Not to Wear. I feel like Staci and Clinton are pretty FA. While they have been known to congratulate people on previous weight loss, it feels like they don't think it's necessary. They think every person, no matter what they look like, deserves to have nice clothes that fit them properly and suit/express their personality. They tell people to be proud of who they are in the present, and dress the body they have, not the body they wish they had. By the end, most of the people they make over feel so confident in themselves that you get the vibe that they don't feel ashamed of their weight anymore.

Well, the closest thing I found is a poem written by Maya Angelou, that I've always enjoyed.
Phenomenal Woman
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size But when I start to tell them, They think I'm telling lies. I say, It's in the reach of my arms The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
I walk into a room Just as cool as you please, And to a man, The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. I say, It's the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they can't touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them They say they still can't see. I say, It's in the arch of my back, The sun of my smile, The ride of my breasts, The grace of my style. I'm a woman
Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
Now you understand Just why my head's not bowed. I don't shout or jump about Or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing It ought to make you proud. I say, It's in the click of my heels, The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand, The need of my care, 'Cause I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
Maya Angelou

Big Blonde and Beautiful is my favorite song. I was going to do a faux queen persona for my school's student drag show, and I was going to sing that as my act...I'll post a video when I do it.

Above all else... I performed/recited Phenomenal Woman in my grade 13 highschool class. I think I started on the FA/HAES road earlier than I realized! biggrin Nayva: I've never watched What Not To Wear but maybe I'll try to catch an episode this year. I don't have cable tv so I only get like, 2 channels. EikoCarol: That would be AWESOME! Good luck.

I thought this might be touching on TV shows and so on as well, is that ok?
Like for instance, what do you think of that reality show More to Love (which I refer to as "The Fatchelor" because I am a hilarious person)? I am a little put off by it, but I'm not sure if that's because it's exploitative of fat people, or because all dating reality shows are a bit gross. I'm also not sure if it's fat-positive or not, because I get it that the girls are all being put forward as attractive and worthy of love, BUT first of all they're only apparently worthy of love by another fat person, not a "socially acceptable" size guy, and second of all it really only proves that fat people are just as likely to be petty, bitchy, and backstabby as thin people, at least when you put them on a reality show where they compete for some guy's attention.
Where do you stand on it?

I 'm generally anti-reality show to begin with, especially those "match-making" shows. I think the only positive for this show is that they don't try to make the contestants lose weight. Honestly, though, I've never watched the show itself. I've just seen Joel McHale make fun of clips of it on The Soup (friday nights on E!--funniest stuff EVER. And that guy went to one of my schools!).

I've kind of been known to refer to Joel McHale as "my boyfriend." Of course in real life he would barely be able to make out my short a** from his height, so this will not be coming to pass anytime soon.

Well, I have a husband, so we're almost even!
I've read an article about it, but I don't think I've actually seen a preview. Or maybe I have, just one. I think we're DVR'ing it when it starts up.

Where do you stand on it? I hate that show with a blinding fury. They put the girls height and weight on the screen like every time they are doing the isolated interviews....I was like WTF??? scream Give me a television show where the fat girl is stylish, loves her body, upbeat, and gets the hot guy. Just ONCE. One show I do like is "Dating in the Dark" because it truly shows that if we were all blind, we'd be better off, because we put WAY too much into appearances, and not enough into the inner self. It pretty much FORCES people to go on personality, because you can't see your partner until the very end. People have in their heads what a person who is charming is supposed to look like, and a lot of times, its the complete opposite of what they expect.

Where do you stand on it? I have one thing to say about Mr. More to Love He chose the skinniest chick in that house when it came down to it... I call that a tad hypocritical

This too is sacred So tonight I was briefly channel surfing and stumbled upon a show called "All Natural Beauty Queen". Apparently they're (whoever the company/product/message is) looking for an ambassador for all the average women out there, a woman who doesnt' pour on the make up, doesn't dress overly fancy, etc. I didn't catch much of the show, but it was nice to see different shapes and colours of people on one show. I'll try to find out more and post it up as I find it. love as thou wilt
