Journal Entry~ Irae's First Passing~ Inspired by Len's Shining Ray

Reaching out for the basket of fruit in the bed where I sleep all alone
I feel time slowly passes me by
But I don't want my memories to fade

A small child slept soundly in his crib, oblivious to the world around him. It was a sweet sight, for as his mind wandered in a dream land, his tiny chest rose and fell with each breath. A tiny thumb was placed at the infant’s mouth, and a soft suckling noise could be heard. Perhaps the child was dreaming about something delicious, a delightful sensation that tanked on the tip of his tongue as he continued in his peaceful slumber. The residue of the sweet juices of his last snack, a small orange that had dropped from the tree in his back yard, still remained on his fingers.

Don't worry, I'm okay
I'm not afraid at all
So please don't cry for me... for me

The day had been a good one; no strife was present in the barren household today, for his mother had been gone for a few days, leaving the house in a constant state of calmness. He was alone, but that was nothing new. It had happened far too often than it should for a child of his age. He had gotten around being unable to reach certain things, learning how to climb onto different objects for leverage, and knowing how to fix food for himself. His body may have been that of a mere 2 year old, but he knew exactly what to do. Surviving was one instinct that seemed to simply be buried deep within his circuit boards.

Shining ray and burning red
Let me try to hide my weakness just for now
'cause I am here believing that I'll see you again
Counting the days under the dying sun

Even so.. There were days where the loneliness seemed to seep through even his brave exterior. His toy, Mr. Pinny couldn’t give him the affection that he craved so much, nor could he truly respond in a way that would have given him some sort of interaction… But he never gave up hope that his mother would return. Each night.. He’d sit at the window, Mr. Pinny held tightly against his tiny body, waiting until the sky turned a bright red, for her..

Nothing is gonna change
No need to fear
Even though the end is drawing near
The world seen from this small closed window
and the clock which is a little bit slow

As night approached swiftly, nothing changed… There was not a single person who came down his deserted lane. The clock on the wall showed a different time than when his mother said she’d return… He wasn’t afraid.. He’d wait just a little longer for his mother, even though it was becoming too dark to see out the little window.. He wouldn’t give up… She promised to return, so she will.

Whatever I try to do
Whatever I try to think of
It doesn't mean a thing
'Cause soon I'll...

The more he fought it, the more his body was beginning to tell him that it was time to sleep. He began to believe that she’d come home if he was busy. He began to change for the night, dressing in his pajamas and taking a bath in the shallow water of a bath he drew. He made careful not to hurt himself, or else when his mother returned, she’d be awfully mad at him.. Dragging his doll upstairs, he struggled for just a moment, to get into his crib, but rested inside it’s high walls.

Shining ray and burning red
Tomorrow seems so far away to me
Frightened and broken inside
I can't get at it
Stop tantalizing me

Night time was the most frightening part of the day for him, so while the sun peeked it’s crimson gaze over the horizon, he wrapped himself up in the blankets of his safe haven. As the night edged on, more and more, he felts terrified, ever last sound seemed to be much louder than when it was daylight. The stars seemed to tease them as one by one they popped up into the sky, almost as if they were saying “We’re not alone, but you are”. It took all he had to ignore each twinkling light, and to fall asleep.

The sky that I am seeing so clearly
All I see is blue; there's no cloud
The thing that I am feeling for sure is that I'll never see it from here again

When the morning came, the same routine played it’s ever monotonous melody. He was growing weaker and weaker, the small fruit supply that he had was slowly depleting, the milk in the fridge had gone sour, and meat reeked of an odor so strong he dared not open the fridge. From his window, he felt his vision blurring, and now he leaned against it’s side.

Ah, I feel a bit drowsy now
Hey look, my little secret box
Guess what is inside; you'll be surprised
Do you see it? Do you feel it?
My sweet memories
My precious memories

The infants eyes slowly began to close, his breathing slowing down to barely a breath… Mr. Pinny was held ever so lovingly in his hands, though he began to go limp, not able to support the doll. The toy rolled from him, and from it’s back fell his most important treasure. It was a small photo of his mother, smiling.. He had only seen her smile once, but that was all he needed.. A tiny hand reached out to grab it, but it was near impossible, as he fell to the floor, limp..

Shining ray and burning red
Let me try to hide my weakness just for now
'cause I am here knowing that I gotta go
Counting the days under the dying sun

His mind was clouding over, but not a single sound was spoken. If a person could see him, they might just assumed he was going to sleep. But he knew that was not the case. As his body began to grow stiff, he wondered if his mother would come sometime soon.. It seem like such a long time since he had last seen her.. The sun, in its own nature, seemed to be setting alongside him, ending it’s reign in the sky, just as he was fading away as well.

Shining ray and burning red
Now I know what happiness is
I have no regrets
I'll be watching over you so
please think of me when you look up at the sky

The dark sky was slowly approaching, and the entire house was shrouded in darkness.. The sun and it’s burning light had disappeared, leaving only a faint glow in it’s wake.. There was no sound.. There was no time… The little infant didn’t seem sad, nor scared.. He simply felt that this was how it was supposed to be… before his eyes closed for what seemed to be the final time, he smiled, looking towards the stars. Maybe his mother would come home soon, and then… She’d smile just like she did before..
