It wasn't often that Ylaine hung around after school. In fact, it wasn't something she had ever done before. There was, apparently, a first time for everything.

Even now, she didn't really want to hang around the school gates. Normally she had better things to do with her time. Shopping, for one. Rearranging her closet. Trying to make shapes out of clouds. Counting blades of grass. Waiting for the universe to end. There were roughly eighty million, billion, gajillion things Ylaine would rather do than spend even a second longer than necessary at school. Unfortunately, in order for Ylaine to find the person she was looking for, she was simply going to have to endure it.

Ylaine stood by the main school gates with her arms crossed, delicate lace gloves gracing her fingertips. They perfectly matched her frilly pink and white lace dress, her lacy white stockings, and the white lace umbrella hanging from her arm. The pink leather purse, not so much, but that was more a thing of color-coordinated necessity than anything else, and it did at least match her pink leather shoes. She looked bored and a bit angry as she ignored the colorful procession of students filing past her towards their homes. Her target had to come this way eventually. She just hoped it would be sooner rather than later because Ylaine hated simply everything about school. The teachers, the rules, the student populace, the supposed "learning" that was just endless, tedious repetition of things she already knew, the laughing, the playing, the children, the work.

Just when she was about to give up and spend the rest of the day hating herself for wasting time loitering at school, she spotted her target. Ylaine afforded herself the tiniest little smirk of accomplishment and immediately launched into a march across the schoolyard to intercept, purse in one hand and umbrella clenched in the other.

Magdelen was tired. No, scratch that, she was exhausted. And lonely. She had only finally gotten back to school after that retarded, useless, endless stint of sickness, and then to be slapped with a day spent in the office, doing nothing? The receptionist was a lovely person she was sure but there was only so much patronization one person could take before they gave up and tried to sleep the rest of the day away in an office chair.

(It never worked.)

So now she finally got to go home, except even that wouldn't be that fun because what would she do? Watch Romeo x Juliet for the thirtieth time and bitterly resent being so ill she lost her role? Eat popcorn and laze around? There needed to be something to do for people like her, she thought bitterly. Other than look ghoulish all the time and hang around hospital oncology centers.

At least she did not have to carry around a backpack, at school or at the doctor's or anywhere, really. She was watching a dark-haired kid pick up books from a ripped seam in his bag when something pink and frilly caught her eye - and her envy. One day, Magdelen thought as she watched the approaching person, she'd be able to wear things like that. When she was well. Yeah, it was unlikely, rather like fantasies of free-climbing a rock wall, but -- wait, was the girl heading her way?

She knew this person, and after a moment's thought she recognized her, and impulsively shouted out the name. "Ylaine!" Wow, it really was Ylaine. But she was dressed so differently than last time! And it had been ages since the time that Magdelen had followed her home; was the other girl only going to chew her out now?

"Um... you look pretty," she said, smiling a little nervously.

Ylaine didn't respond to that; of course she looked pretty, she was Ylaine. That was just stating the obvious. Admittedly, stating the obvious was part of the reason Ylaine liked Magdelen, but there was no time for it at the moment. Slipping the handles of her purse over her wrist, Ylaine hooked Magdelen's arm in her own tightly and informed the other girl, "You're coming with me." Apparently Ylaine had never heard of the concept of an invitation because she wasn't leaving Magdelen much choice in the matter.

What?! Where were they going? It didn't cross her mind that it was slightly odd to be told, not asked, to go somewhere with someone. After all, Iselda was the only person that she'd really ever visited. The two of them hadn't so much invited or commanded as simply decided, through an unspoken agreement in some undiscovered language of eye flicks, small smiles, and secretive nods, that they would visit on such a time at one or the other's house.

Of course, that hadn't happened much lately...

She tried to loosen the grip Ylaine held on her arm a little; it kind of hurt, and she was worried about the pretty clothes getting dirty, but it seemed like the other girl was having none of it. "Sure," she agreed, trying to sound incurious, "but where are you going?"

For a moment, Ylaine let a shred of regret slip into her mind, as in I regret that I sometimes bother to try and interact with people. It was quickly gone. There was, after all, only so much contempt you could have for somebody you were essentially kidnapping. "We are going to my home," Ylaine informed Magdelen, and indeed, they were turning down a road somewhat familiar to Magdelen, as she had been this way once before.

Ylaine set a rather brisk pace for the two of them. It wasn't so much a lovely stroll between two acquaintances as it was Ylaine dragging Magdelen down the road, threatening to pull the other girl's arm off with each step, hurrying them towards their destination for a reason which wasn't at all clear.

Ah, well... that was cool. The hotel place had been nice, she liked it a lot, so that was all right. Wasn't it?

Unplanned detours aside, unreasonable pace along with it, Magdelen had to admit spending some part of an afternoon with Ylaine was highly preferable to spending the entirety of the rest of the day with herself and the television. By now she'd seen the 'I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant' featurette on VH1 so many times she could recite it by heart, and every single movie on the bookshelves was pretty dull.

People were interesting and always changing. It would be nice to see how Ylaine had changed, too? Maybe. Magdelen would have sighed, but she needed all of her restricted capability to breathe just to keep up with Ylaine, so she didn't.

With the brisk pacing they arrived at the hotel's entrance in what was probably record speedwalking time. Ylaine glanced both ways as if she was worried someone would spot them and wordlessly pulled Magdelen inside. Somehow, her grip on Magdelen's arm tightened even further. It seemed Ylaine was a bit nervous and apprehensive.

The hotel lobby was empty. As quickly as Ylaine's grip had tightened it relaxed. No sign of anyone who might annoy her or get in her way this afternoon. In other words, no sign of Sam, Harry, Harry's BFF Jack, Terry, James, or (gods forbid) Reginald. Ylaine might have stood there listing every person she was glad to have avoided, but if she did that, someone would definitely show up, so she focused on guiding Magdelen across the lobby and up the stairs to the second floor.

It was almost eerily quiet in the hotel. No maid carts rattling or bellboys running room service, no tourists wandering about or televisions blaring behind closed doors. Just miles and miles of quiet corridors and empty rooms. The thick carpeting muffled the sound of their feet as they came to Ylaine's door. Ylaine did not stop and instead proceeded to the following door: her closet. Ylaine had to release Magdelen's arm to grope around in her purse for her keys, which meant for the first time in ten minutes Magdelen could, if she so wanted to, escape.

She had almost no time to appreciate her surroundings. The silence was not unfamiliar, but still unsettling; her impression from various movies was that places like this were bustling, full of life, and she was somewhat disappointed to see that they truly were silent. Maybe that was for the better, though, since Ylaine seemed to be worried about something, and if that was so, then... Well, Magdelen didn't know what that would mean, except that it wasn't good.

Once released, Magdelen did step back a bit, but only enough that she could discreetly rub her arm and then straighten her hair some. Chemotherapy was not fun, and the wig was not comfortable, but it kept her looking normal enough when it didn't get knocked askew- which was not often, thankfully, or at least it hadn't been often.

With a somewhat secretive expression, she looked up and down the hallway. No one was there but her and Ylaine - and Magdelen didn't know whether that was good or not.

Ylaine found her keys amidst the makeup compacts and tubes of sparkly lip gloss in her purse and unlocked the door at last. Magdelen did not have to be told to follow Ylaine in. The lights came on just as the door was closing.

It was, all things considered, pretty amazing. What had once been an entire hotel room had been reimagined as a giant walk-in closet. Hanging clothes lined the walls, meticulously arranged by style and color. Drawers underneath promised to contain even more fashionable treasures, everything from scarves and belts to stockings and underwear. Nearest the door were hooks for hanging purses, most of them in use. There was a three-way mirror and and entire section devoted to rows of shoes. The whole space was lit like a professional gallery.

There were also, directly ahead, five wooden head forms, four of them occupied by wigs of various colors. There was the short pink one, and the long pink one, and a black one and a brown one. The fifth head sat empty and was, presumably, for the long blonde wig Ylaine was currently wearing.

She looked around at the room in something between shock and awe. Perhaps it was a perfect combination of both. Magdelen had never even conceived of one person owning enough clothing to fill an entire room - that sort of thing was for television studios, stage shows, circus acts. This didn't make Ylaine freakish, but... it tempered Magdelen's already warm opinion of her. No wonder Ylaine dressed differently every day - with a closet so full of clothes like this, she probably never had to repeat an outfit a day in her life.

The entire room was amazing. Staying behind Ylaine so as not to go somewhere where she was not wanted, she looked around the room again, slower... over the shoes, the purses, the clothing - and her gaze stopped on the wig heads. At that moment, her expression was best described as dumbfounded. Why would Ylaine wear wigs? Magdelen had of course noticed the difference, but... she had thought that the blond hair was Ylaine's real hair, and maybe she'd worn the pink wig for fun, yes it had been shocking but to know that someone willingly owned a collection of wigs, it seemed odd! Unsettling, even. She lightly touched her fingertips to her head and tried to straighten her expression.

"You have a lot of clothes," said Magdelen. Maybe if she could pass off the expression as just awe at the clothes and not that... Again she touched her hair for reassurance. Staring at the wigs was not helping her at all. Probably Ylaine would get mad. What if she needed them the same way Magdelen needed this? "I bet you'll never have to wear the same outfit twice," she continued in a hurry. Then she wondered what they were doing there - but decided it was better not to ask.

"Probably not," Ylaine agreed, shrugging as she hung up her purse and umbrella. She proceeded to the nearest clothes rack, which was totally stuffed with clothes. It was a veritable rainbow of soft pastels, black, greys, white, and pink. Lots and lots of pink. Ylaine ran her fingers across hanging fabrics. Her hand paused on one. Reaching up, she unhooked it from the rod and pulled it out.

Ylaine turned to Magdelen, holding up the dress. It was white with pastel green panels down the sides, a broad lacy white cloth hem, and matching lacy white cloth collar. Ylaine pursed her lips in appraisel. "Try this on," she instructed Magdelen, handing the dress to Magdelen and returning her attention to the clothing rack to pick out some more garments. "You can change in the bathroom there." She indicated the door with a flick of her wrist.

Instead of following Ylaine this time, Magdelen stayed in place, still too shaken over the wigs thing - though, thankfully, it seemed like Ylaine hadn't noticed her preoccupation, or if she had hadn't come to the same conclusion Magdelen would have. That was only to the good, she thought as she stared at the fabrics, so she would stop staring and wondering what color Ylaine's real hair was.

For a moment, Magdelen stood with the dress in her hands, looking rather dumbfounded. She seemed to be doing that a lot today, and she pulled herself together enough to do as told and walk into the bathroom. After a minute of just staring - this was the kind of clothing fairytale princesses (or Ylaine) wore - she pulled off the sweater over her head, taking the wig with it because she had no other way to handle it. Her real hair stood up in grayish-white spikes - it was too short to be a real problem with anything, she barely had to think about it. And once she had the pretty dress on, she replaced the wig, folded her clothes over one arm and tentatively pushed open the door.

Caution was good. After all, she couldn't know what else Ylaine was planning.
