The idea of these prompts is to encourage you all to write. Also hopefully they'll keep you busy between posts.
The way it works is very simple: You take one prompt at a time, write a story of any length and post it here as a reply (you may post it elsewhere as well - I encourage people to use the writing arena).
How to select a prompt: There are 500 prompts to choose from. You read that correctly. 500. You are not expected to do them all. One reason I have chosen so many is simply because that way it really lowers the chance of anyone ending up with the same prompt twice. If you can do them all, you are awesome and I bow to you. There are two ways to select a prompt. The first is the easy way. Find one you like in the list and write it. The second is the surprising way, but a little more fun. You choose which category you want (there are five of them) and then roll a random number with the number generator (between 1 - 100). You take what you end up with. You may roll again or change category only if you have already written for the prompt. Rolling for a random prompt is the preferred method.
How to post your story: Simply reply with it here. Make sure you put at the top which category it is from, which number and what the prompt was. And a title, if you have one that is different to the prompt. E.g.:
Air - 79 - Flight
That's it! The categories are below. Enjoy!

(( Well... it didn't turn out as well as I hoped, but I am at a loss for what to do. Here we are! ))
Superstition “Mother, mother, look!” A grinning boy points a small finger towards me as I pad silently down the street. I’m in top form today, I know. Glossy black fur shining, long tail held jauntily in the air, inquisitive green eyes bright and shining. Ears held towards the sky, listening to the rumbling of trucks passing on the road, sending billowing clouds of black into the grey.
A woman’s eyes follow the boy’s gesture; one might say her expression held disinterest at best, annoyance at most. The slight line of her lips, the wrinkles made of frowning, not smiling. Middle aged, working class, I would guess. Her clothes appear a little worn, her shoes dependable for all occasions, they’re very clearly well loved. Judging by the wide brimmed hat, and the snazzy outfit on the little boy, I would guess they’re headed to church, to each their own, I suppose.
First impressions are strange things. It is amazing what an intelligent observer can learn about a person just from watching them. Maybe one needs the cynicism that comes with spending half your life in feline from to perfect the art. There is something to be said for it in any case.
The boy’s eyes are a joyful, rich, brown color that I take an instant liking to. Here is a boy who looks like he knows what being a child is all about. There’s a small smudge on his chin, and his fingernails are a little dirty. It’s easy to see him playing in the garden as his mother rushes out the door. He seems excited, and that sort of thing is always infectious anyways.
So I pad a little closer, eager to feel his small hand stoking across my back. However, mother dearest has different ideas for her little boy. She pulls him closer, her hand clutching his shoulder severely as she turns chilly eyes on my form. “No, Jonathan, black cats are bad luck.” Her gaze is distrusting, like I’m going to turn into some big, awful monster and eat her soul or something. A working, church going, woman, of course she would be superstitious. They always are. “Come along.” She speaks once more in her tight voice.
But, hey, I’m a cat, I don’t know. So my steps continue uninterrupted, undisturbed by her prejudice towards me. I get it all the time. But, I bet she would like me even worse in my human form. Is a freak worse luck than a black cat? Could the appearance of a freak be in fact due to the bad luck caused by crossing paths with an inky haired feline, even? The thought makes me chuckle as I approach the boy, a purr rumbling deep within my chest as I wind my way around the young boys legs. His response is much the same as mine, and his light laughter caresses my ears.
The mother clucks her tongue and pulls the boy away, muttering under her breath. So I follow. They continue down the street, and I see they must be headed towards the Cathedral at the end of the road. It’s no problem for me to keep pace just a few feet behind them, waving my tail in the air as I walk, he’s craning his neck around to watch, giggling a little each time he looks and I’m still there.
We’re approaching the steps of the massive building now, and the child is frowning in a glum manner as he is practically pulled up the stone stairs. Suddenly he ducks down and pulls free of his mother’s grip, racing down the stairs with the recklessness only a child can get away with unscathed. He sweeps me up into his arms, snuggling me to his chest. He cuddles me for a moment, and then in a small voice he whispers into my ear. “Bye, Kitty.” And sets me gently down on the pavement.
Cut to the mother, who crooks a finger, beckoning the boy with a face that clearly reads displeasure, anger even. The boy gulps down a breath and holding his head high resigns walking up the stairs to meet his fate. Smack! Smack! Two hard slaps to the bottom cause him to cry out, and after a few cross words I can’t hear the mother starts into the building, clearly expecting the boy to follow, which the boy does, but not before turning to me with a mischievous smile and a wave in farewell.
If I could have smirked I would’ve, but instead I just sat as I watch the boy enter the building, knowing he would always break free of imposed superstitions. Knowing he would get to be himself.
