"How does this thing work anyway?"

They were out by the lake. Yali had taken respite on a large boulder. Uuni thought she looked rather rested lying on her back with her eyes closed. Either that, or just lazy.

As it was, she was trying to figure out Yali's lovely little instrument. She had seen them played, some people with greater skills than others, but she'd never been daring enough to pick up the object that Yali took with her everywhere.

"Not like that." Yali's voice was barely a murmur. One arm moved to cover her eyes and she shifted with a contented sigh.

"What do you mean not like this? You're not even looking." Regardless of whether Yali was looking or not, Uuni was holding it in a rather upside down and backwards manner. Taking the long bow, she tried a string or two.

"Not like that," Yali repeated. Her hands had moved to her ears.

"You're a horrible teacher," Uuni commented and another screech rippled the lakewater close at hand. "Are you sure this is an instrument and not a weapon?" Teeth ground together, Uuni gave up and set the istrument carefully next to its relaxing owner. That was quite enough of that for today.

Now, all she needed to do was to wait until someone got attracted to that vile sound. Someone wouldn't be able to resist the urge to tell her to stop playing, and then this nice Ista afternoon would finally yield something that was less boring than Yali.

"Shards above, will someone please put that dying musician out of their misery? My ears will burst soon." Drawling a bit, the raven-haired girl ambled over towards the girls and the straight line of her mouth turned down when she identified the area in which the pair was seated. The large rock beneath the lounging girl was her favourite resting spot. Favourite resting spot that her idiotic brother didn't know of, at least. More than once, Rawni had been forced to dive to the side of the boulder and hide from Ralke.

Either way, the ridiculous racket needed to stop immediately, and if she could manage to convince the females to remove themselves from her plans of a quiet afternoon, all would be well.

Squinting her gray eyes a bit, she identified at least one of them as a Candidate that had been attempting to Impress with a dragonet for several turns now. The other girl looked somewhat familiar as well, but she didn't know either of their names.

"I assume you aren't going to relinquish your prime seating," she sighed, and heard her brother's voice in her head, demanding she try to be nicer and make some friends.

Ugh.

And thus, Rawni found herself similarly lounging in the grass, as if she actually knew these two wretched creatures. With her eyes closed and a scowl on her face, nonetheless, but it was an effort. She supposed.

[[My social responsibilities just exploded. D:]]

With a long yawn, Uuni rested her chin into the palm of her hand and her elbow onto her knee. If Yali could do it, so could she. It was about that time that she saw the figure walking towards the two of them.

This perked her interest considerably; all attempts to look bored and lazy were abandoned in light of this newfound face.

Seeing the pained, almost angry expression on the girl's face, Uuni couldn't help but to grin.

"She makes pretty good assumptions, this one." It was directed towards Yali. Uuni received a grunt in response. Waving the lounge-lizard off with the roll of her eyes, she rotated her hips and legs to the other side of the rock she was sitting so she could straddle it and face this new, black-haired girl straight on.

"You won't ever get much out of her than that. She's the dullest person you'll ever meet, but that's plenty about her. You've got quite a scowl going there. Life that bad?" The corner of her mouth twitched a bit, but the grin did not fade.

"You've caused such a ruckus, my brother will probably locate me via noise alone. Then again, you're probably bestest friends with that lout." Irritated with the situation, the female decided that she would leave within the next five minutes if this afternoon didn't shape itself up.

Fiddling with a blade of grass she had previously plucked from the ground, Rawni's scowl only deepened when she considered the thought of her brother knowing these girls. Or worse, having been with one of them. Or both of them.

Sometimes she really did wish she could properly claim that they weren't related. Ralke was such a nuissance.

"Rawni," she finally muttered under her breath as she picked at the grass between her fingers, as a superbly lame way of introducing herself.

"I'm waiting to Impress," she added, a bit stupidly. What else would someone her age be doing at a Weyr without a Craft. For shards, this was a waste of her time.

Uuni's lips pursed together and their edges curled. At first, it was hardly noticeable but it quickly became obvious. At some point, her willpower failed and she broke into laughter. It was raucous in a way that the girl likely wouldn't want.

When she'd settled, she tucked in her shoulders a bit and let a bemused expressions befall her features. "Friends. That's a good one."

"You don't like your brother? Oh how I can relate. I hate my sister with a loathing passion." Oh, were they switching names now. "I'm Uuni. It's good to meet you, even if your face is sour."

There was more laughter close at hand. This time it was quieter. There was smoothness to the sound that her previous vocal demonstration had lacked. "Shoulder-knots," she pointed out in a soft whisper. Her own fingers coiled around her own and she lifted them gently.

At this point, as slow as she was, Yali pulled herself into a sitting position and rubbed her eyes. She regarded Rawni with a quiet air and then waved. "Yali," she said in a monotonous tone.

"Have you been here long?" Uuni asked with that smile that never ceased but only changed in motivation. "I can't believe I wouldn't have seen a pretty face like yours before?"

Yali interjected. "She says that to everyone."

Rawni ignored the laughter but allowed her scowl to subside a bit and enjoy the decent weather: turning her face up towards the bright afternoon sun.

"Ralke has a way of getting to know people that didn't intend to be known about," the younger sibling mused quietly, while she watched the other girls with a careful gaze. The noisy, laughing girl could be a good companion, but reminded her of Ralke much more than she would have rathered. The quiet one, Yali, Rawni would probably prefer her company, but seemed a bit boring.

She rolled her eyes at the compliment, but leaned back on her hands. "I'm sure," she finally replied and glanced at Yali in appreciation. Neither of these girls were exactly her type, but it wasn't as if she knew what her type was anyways.

"A few turns now, yes. My brother decided he was going to come and I wasn't going to let him go without me, so here I am. You two?"

Ralke? Uuni wrote him down mentally as someone to avoid at all costs. Men like that only meant two things to her: Gay, and thus talking it up with many, gossiping women, or sex-talkers. It wasn't like she was afraid she'd spill anything, but talkers were the most obnoxious bunch there was. Dealing with that absolutely would not do.

"Oh, don't you two be like that," Uuni said with a short, chiming laugh that rung off the end of her words. "I don't say that to everyone I meet. I'll say 'you look like you'd be great in bed', or 'you have beautiful eyes', but I'd never lie, and you do have a pretty face." Not that it really mattered past a certain point, but the art was in getting there, wasn't it?

Yali tried to catch Rawni's gaze and rolled her eyes respectively. She'd heard it all before. The girl never took a rest.

Both girls, however, took their time to listen to Rawni's explanation of her status. Yali seemed vaguely interested, and Uuni did a very good job of looking fascinated.

"I'm verging on four turns now, is it, Yali?" The redhead shrugged, and Uuni decided to leave it there.

"When winter comes, I'll have spent my first full turn here." By now, Yali had started to stretch out parts of her body. Fingers, arms, back. Resting on a rock could get uncomfortable and Uuni didn't blame her.

Still, it was time they did something exciting. Rising to her feet, Uuni offered a hand down to Rawni. A smile was playing on the edges of her lips when she next spoke. "You ever jump in a lake with all your clothes on, Rawni?"

Rawni similarly rolled her eyes with Yali, but then nodded to both of the females' responses. She almost didn't know how to feel about these girls. Uuni was clearly a flirt and looking for some action, irregardless of whether she swung Uuni's way and Yali seemed to just tag along for the ride. Irregardless of whether she had wanted to or not, it seemed.

Either way, she was not going to enter the lake with her clothes on. It was hardly warm enough to do so without her clothing, but shards if she was going to walk around soaking wet for the remainder of the afternoon. She had things to do, at any rate.

While she didn't know exactly what they were yet, but that wasn't the point.

The black-haired girl raised one eyebrow elegantly and let her expression drop; "No, and I don't intend to. Throw your counter-part in, if you must," she responded with a snip as she closed her eyes and shifted from her hands to her lower arms and elbows: lounging prettily against the grass.

Uuni grinned even broader at the refusal. Yali was not really water beast. If she went in, it was going to take them well into dinner to get her out from somewhere on lake-bottom.

"You worried about a little cold?" she asked with a non-committal shrug. "It will be fun. Like a sort of therapy. Then, later, you can think of all the things you've done in life while freezing and realize this will have been the most stupid one." And, honestly, it wasn't that cold!

"Ah, come on. We'll jump in together. It will be like a bondage thing. Bonding thing? Bonding thing." She settled down next to the girl and offered her best, honest smile and nudged the girl's knee with hers.

"Or you can just sit there and look sour."

Yali was busy looking towards the kitchens. They couldn't be seen from way down by the lake, but she knew their general area.

If Uuni and Rawni did end up going for a swim - although it wasn't looking very promising for Uuni - she'd use the time to meander up in the direction of food.

Rawni rolled her eyes again at the girl. Uuni. There was absolutely no way that she was going to approach the lake with her clothes on. Had she offered a similar activity sans the clothing, she might have been slightly more likely to do so, but what deadglow wants to swim in their clothes?

Not even Ralke would be that idiotic.

"Look. I'm not going into the lake with my clothes on. It's freezing cold, I don't want to sop around in my clothes for the remainder of the evening, and your immature and unimaginative attempts to charm me are clearly not working. You're not attractive to me, so why don't you go run along and sleep with my roommate instead. I'm sure Avery would enjoy your promiscuous behavior in ways I don't intend to learn."

Her stormy gray eyes were glittery with irritation as she delivered the speech. Removing whatever contact was left between the girls, Rawni stood and held out her hand for Yali.

"Did you want to go to dinner?" She drawled, having noticed the direction of the girl's attention a few moments earlier.

If she were any normal person, Uuni would have had to bite her tongue at the lashing and look at least moderately affected.

Instead her grin turned lazy. "Well, I'd tell you to jump in with your clothes off, but that would ruin all the excitement." She managed to grind her teeth for the next part, but it was out of trying not to laugh rather than upset. "Avery? I already have."

"Your loss!" As to which loss she was referring, she didn't intend to point. She was on her feet quickly after that, and walking out along the beach, likely to find some victim.

It would show later when she was in the dining hall later that evening, laughing with some guy, wet hair, but dry clothes. She'd further regret it when she caught a cold later, but she would always claim it was worth it.

-

Yali moved her gaze from the kitchens back towards Rawni when she spoke. For a while, she didn't say anything. However, if she had heard any Rawni's delightful snip, she obviously didn't care enough about Uuni to comment on it.

"They're serving pudding," Yali pointed out. "I'm not really interested in today's burnt bread and soup."

But she'd eat it anyway, because Dayo had told her the importance of eating right, and Yali wasn't a fan of some of the stories that went with people who did not.

"Did you want company?" Yali looked towards Rawni's outstretched hand, but didn't take it.

She should probably have washed hers before dinner.

Rawni shrugged her shoulders, noncommittally. It would be nice to walk along with someone for a change, but it wasn't going to ruin her entire sevenday if Yali didn't accompany her.

...Ralke would be impressed, though, and that might get him off of her back, for a change. And perhaps her reputation would decrease in overall negativity. Not that she bothered to put forth the effort to care enough to try and change that.

"If you're interested." She finally decided and put her hand back into her pocket, the other lightly resting on her hip. The leathers that covered her lower body offered only a slight idea of the figure beneath them, but were loose enough to grant her sufficient pocket space. And that pleased her.

Her gaze momentarily followed Uuni as she obliviously pranced down the beach and tried to restrain herself from making a comment under her breath. She was happy enough to oblige her mind though, humming quietly in the back of her throat as she began their trek towards the kitchens.

Yali seemed to think this over for a bit.

"Okay," she finally answered and took the first few steps. When Rawni looked back, she smiled. It was just barely a perking from her lips, but it was there for the observant to catch.

Taking the look as secret worry instead of agitation, she added, "She'll be alright. She does stupid things all the time and hasn't died yet." There was a short paused before she continued. "Maybe today will be different." The mute expression returned.

Stuffing her thumbs into her pockets, she rocked onto her tip toes and stretched. "I want pudding," she reiterated from earlier before leading Rawni down the trail and then up towards the Weyr and the kitchens.

Her stomach growled twice on the way.

(( Wrap there? Seems like a good place, at least on my end. ))

[[Probsies, but we should do another Yali-Rawni since their personalities mesh a little better than Rawni-Uuni... and by that I mean Rawni might throw a punch if Uuni marches her a** over to talk to her in the near future. Lulz.]]

(( Why not both at some point or another? Uuni could do for getting some sense knocked into her head, and she's a kind enough heart that she wouldn't even tell who did it. xD ))
