"Come on Nereus, Nimue..." He smiled as he led his family along giving Tae slight sideways smiles his eyes tender. The pups were growing now almost reaching adolescence it was time to teach them to swim and fish. Butterfinger lived on a diet of mainly fish where as most of the pack ate mostly meat, as such his coat shone with incredible natural oils. In the frigid cold of winter he could plunge into the water with ease, and in the warmth of summer he spent more time in the water then on land. He was lucky to have found such a beautiful and brilliant mate everyday he woke up beside Tae he was thankful. Of course what made her even more special was the joyful gift she had given him, two amazing pups, healthy and hale children for them to raise.

He moved to walk closer to his mate leading them to a wider river where swimming was a bit harder but not yet dangerous. It was the perfect depth and width to let the pups swim and still be able to help them if they needed it.

Nereus followed after his sister still sniffing around with open curiosity at everything, it was their first venture away from the packlands and the best part was that they were all together. His nose twitched a mile a minute and he wondered idly when they would get a chance to try their paw at fishing he leaned closer to his sister and grinned. "Bet I catch more then you."

Tae smiled every time she caught Butter looking at her. Since having the pups he seemed to have a permanent smile on his maw, making another this happy was a joy in itself but the fact it also made her happy was nearly unbearable. He called to the pups and then pulled in closer to her, she leant into him and rubbed her shoulder up against his, nuzzling his neck with her wet nose and then smiling her attentions turning to the body of water ahead.

Her knowledge of the area was increasing day by day, though she had remained mostly on the packs territory while the pups were very young and still vulnerable. Getting away and out from the general bustle of the packs activities was welcomed. A flash of excitement crossed her storm grey eyes and she tried hard to contain herself.

Nimue wasn't as calm or as graceful as her mother. Neither was she shy or timid like her father. She was both of her parents wilder sides, Tae's excitable nature when she was free and around water and Butterfingers more bold and courageous side when around Tae. She trotted along in front of her brother, her grey eyes constantly darting about her, taking in the new surroundings.

Nereus caught up to her, leaning in he taunted her with a bet. She growled softly and nipped playfully at his ear, 'I bet you don't 'cause I'm going to get in the water first.' She barked and then leapt forwards, charging around her parents and heading straight for the water.

Butterfinger was so proud of his children, and his mate, he watched her eyes and grinned at the flash of excitement. He knew how much his mate loved the water, as much as he did. She was adapting rather well to the pack but they both needed this time away from their ever loving family and with their own pups.

He watched as Nimue ran ahead and laughed "Don't bellyflop, it'll hurt!" Unlike most parents there was no fear in his eyes. He didn't consider the water a danger to his children confident in their abilities despite their youth. Of course he also knew that both Tae and himself were such excellent swimmers that even if their children did falter they would be able to rescue them easily enough.

"Hey!" Nereus darted after his sister determined but laughing. He heard his fathers warning, but it came too late he had already flung himself into the air to try and get ahead of his sister. With a loud smacking sound he flopped into the water as if it were the ground. He shook his head dazed and sunk down before starting to paddle the way his parents had showed him. "It's cooolder then our stream mama!" He shuddered and pumped his legs harder, it was deeper too.

Tae's step became a skip as she held in her desire to dash to the welcoming embrace of the cooling water of the lake, but she held back her energy and bounced towards the source of her excitement in a restrained manner, trying to give the image of her growing age and demonstrating how a wolf should control primal desires.

But it was no good and her storm grey eyes rolled and thundered as she dug her nails into the soil and clawed herself forward, spiriting for the water. Flicking her head, she stared back over her shoulder at Butter, the sight and action familiar to when they had first met and had jumped from the waterfall together. She smiled with passion and a sparkled danced upon her eye, 'Come on...'

Turning she called out to her son, still running towards the water and her pups, 'It's because it's deeper my love and the sun cannot warm it all and there are not as many currents to stir the water. Swim my love and you will soon warm.'

Nimue was for all her spirit still a female and the younger of the two, slightly smaller and her brother easily took over him but a wicked grin spread across her maw as he leapt into the water and his belly slapped against the still surface of the water. The sound was painful and a smug little grin decorated her face.

Charging into the water she swam out to her brother and pawed at his back trying to get his attention, 'Hey, hey... I bet I can swim further out than yooooou.' She nudged him with her shoulder and paddled off.

Butter had to laugh as he watched tae's attempt at restraint to him she was as graceful and young as ever especially in the element they both loved. He grinned at her beaconing and raced to follow her eager to be with his family. His family, it felt so wonderful to have them, to have her, his life finally felt complete, the last puzzle piece sliding into place to create the beautiful scene that was his life.

Sad at first with only his brother and he wandering alone in the world their parents forever lost to them, and then joyful as they found their cousins and settled into the ideal pack life. Somber then as Venera, Tempeste, and Moranna in turn all left, then joyful when Venera and Tempeste returned. Anxious with the looming concern of war, but then the picture settled into peacefulness and happiness as Tae agreed to be his mate, to remain with him. Somehow no matter what new parts were painted onto their picture, as long as he had her the rest would all be alright.

He chuckled as his children played, each one eager to outdo the other his daughter so energetic and carefree and his son so boisterous and impetuous. He grinned then for the gleam in his mates eyes was like a burst straight to his chest. He raced after her eager to feel the cool embrace of the water.

Nereus paddled around and grinned at his sisters pawing, oh another challenge? "I bet you can't! Hey No fair, thats a head start!" His head dipped under the water a moment before he bobbed back up and moved his legs furiously his body already warming up.

His sisters form was small lithe and perfectly suited to cutting through the water, so she had speed on her side at least, but it hardly discouraged him. He grinned and pushed his chest forward his paws churning in the water as he followed her.

Tae hit the water and the sudden shocking cold did not prevent her from continuing her charge into the liquid mirror. She waded out until her belly was touching the water, the cold grasped at the finer haired area of her underbelly and she gasped, smiling. She lifted her paws off the course sand and floated there for a moment, the sensation of something else carrying all her weight pleasant. With the occasional kick of her powerful legs she kept herself balanced and stared out to her pups.

They were racing each other, out into deeper parts on the central lake, though there would be little currents to effect them a motherly voice called out, 'Not to far now, turn about in a bit please.'

Nimue heard her mothers calling and twisted her head over her shoulder, this costed her a little speed and she heard her brother closing in on her. Ignoring her mother's command she flicked her head back, pushed her nose forward and powered onwards, striving to beat her brother.

Butterfinger barely showed any sign of the cold affecting him, his thick oily coat took quite some time to soak it all up and by then he found himself adjusted just fine. He grinned and swam alongside his mate happily watching at the pups swam farther out.
"Their not showing any signs of slowing, we best follow..."
He smirked softly before adding. "and show them what real speed is." He chuckled.

Nereus paddled hard and tried to streamline his body to catch up to his sister, the water sprayed around his frantic paws and he inhaled a fine mist of water. It felt so good to him, his young body took in the cold happily. His muscles warmed under his puppy fur and he let out a joyful yip, this was living!

Tae swam at Butterfinger's pace, though really she was matching hers, he was capable of moving a lot quicker than herself, for though she may be lighter and sleeker, he was younger, in his prime and had more muscle mass at his disposal. Tae looked ever forward, it was true no harm could come of them from the lake itself, but she knew her pups and they were both full of energy and life, though they had yet to learn their boundaries. She feared that they would fatigue and would struggle to make it to shallower water in time, so instead of calling out in futile effort, she took Butter's advise and aimed to catch up with them.

Nimue felt herself tiring, but she was stubborn and she would not lose out to her brother. She dug deep and searched for a scrap more energy to push herself on, how far she did not know, perhaps until Nereus called her from behind and admitted his defeat.

He caught up to his pups and quickly grabbed Nimue by the scruff with a chuckle while moving to block off Nereus. "Easy you two..." He mumbled from around his daughter scruff before plopping her back into the water towards Tae. "Listen to your mother now..."

Nereus was startled when he found his path blocked by his father, he was too small still to manage going around him. He paddled in place and found that much harder to do then just swimming forward. Yes yes, he knew mama called them to turn about and slowly he managed.

Tae slowed as she released that Butter had the situation at hand, the large yellow giant was laid back and didn't seem to get agitated at all that the pups simply didn't listen sometimes, Nereus wasn't so bad, however Nimue had an independent streak that she could she would get her into trouble with time. She smiled a little to herself at that though knowing her own nature and her desire for wide open spaces and she finally concluded she could not hold that against Nimue for she knew the desire to escape from everything all to well.

She smiled at Butter as he turned to face her with Nimue in his mouth, he was a good and loving father as he was a mate yet firm and fair he controlled the pups well, yes a good father indeed. She raised her eye brows at little at Nimue and gave her that look that said, 'Behave or we'll have words.' and then focused down at Nereus who was struggling to turn in the water after being confronted with a large yellow wall of fur, she smiled at him and encouraged him to continue his work and then to swim over to her. 'Shall we try some fishing then, if you can find it in yourselves to behave.' She looked at Nimue meaningfully and then smiled and turned, heading back to shallower water where the pups would be able to stand and fish.

Nimue felt the ripples as her father swam about herself and her brother and then suddenly she was hosted up out of the water by the scruff of her neck and she slumped dejectedly in her father's grasp. She caught the look her mother gave her and she wiggled uncomfortably and then glowered down at the floundering Nereus mumbled in a sulky voice, 'I still got further than you.' She stuck out her tongue quickly at her brother before her mother spotted her and then caught her eye once again as he mother threated her lightly and sighed and twisted slightly to catch her fathers eye but with no avail so she simply spoke loud enough for him to hear, 'I was only playing, I'll behave, mother will let me fish right?'

Butterfinger chuckled and nudged his daughter along after her mother, Nimue was so eager to compete, and Nereus matched her enthusiasm. He was proud of both his pups, yet he knew they needed to be guided lest their natures lead them into trouble.

"Of course she'll let you fish, go on now." He glanced back at Nereus who was finally managing to catch back up.
"Come along Nereus, the fish won't hold still for you."

He smiled and swam back to the shallows watching his pups to ensure they made it safely there as well. He gave a slight shake spraying water about while most of it clung to his fur in droplets. He smiled over at Tae and licked her cheek softly.

Nereus took a deep breath and flopped himself around just in time to see his sister stick her tongue out, hmph! He was loath to admit she had been ahead...but he knew he would have caught up and surpassed her soon enough if papa hadn't come along. He would have! "Uuf!" He swam quickly towards the shallow water and stood finally, the water brushing his chin.
Whew, what a workout! Now...to catch some fish!
"Hey Nimue...bet I catch more fish then you!" He smirked and stuck his tongue out at her.

Tae walked into shallower water which lapped at just above her knee joint of her leg. There would not be any fish worth eating in such shallow water in a lake like this, while in a river of the same depth the fish maybe larger but here in the lake the fish were different types and often grew accustomed to having deeper water to inhabit plus it took a lot more patience as those that were worth catching same into view less often. It was a good test for the pups and their patience, which Nimue certainly didn't process, Nereus harboured more promise; perhaps Nimue would be more suited to hunting mammals and working with others than the solo hunting of fishing.

She turned about and watched as the pups swam in after their father, her eyes focusing in front of them the enlarging body of Butter as he came closer. She smiled warmly at him and stood still while he greeted her with a lick causing her eyes to sparkle like the moon light dancing upon the lakes rippling surface. Her attentions focused back onto her pups and she ushered them in. 'Come along.'

Nimue was plopped back into the water and she sunk down into it before rising and regaining her buoyancy. She started paddling forwards with a quick push from her father before he over took her and swam to her mother. She surged forwards after him with Nereus to her side and upon reaching the spot where her parents stood she started to brush the sand underneath the water, stirring up clouds of dust and then coming closer still she found her feet. Standing in the water up to her belly, her legs now feeling a little jelly like from swimming such a distant she stared at her brother who now issued the next competition. 'What, just like I got further than you?'

'That's enough of that, thank you.'

Nimue glowered at her brother but then looked up at her mother and father expectantly.

Butterfinger smiled at his mate watching her with loving eyes for a long moment before managing to look away. "Behave you two..." He murmured with a smile for is pups tugging his sons ear and giving her daughter a loving nuzzle. "Your mother is going to teach you the art of fishing..." Which was a nice way of saying she was going to show them how to be patient. Fishing like any skill required practice and patience, but because it seemed to require an awful lot more patience then most skills it was often overlooked. One might think that a fisher was lazy, he could lay all day by the river. That wasn't true at all if you were laying by the river every sense was alert, the body was tense and coiled ready to spring.

Nereus settled down and gave his father a playful growl as his ear was tugged. He nudged against his sister for a moment in an affectionate bump before paying attention to his mother. He wanted to learn, he wanted to be as good as his parents when it came to fishing. He saw the importance of his families contributions to the pack and he was excited to help. He loved the taste of fish, from the first moment his father had let him try it. He loved the way the scales slid away to reveal tender tasteful meat, he even liked the little pricks of tiny bones and the way they crunched up under his puppy jaws.

He licked his lips and focused again on his mother following her and settling himself in the shallow water. His paws were braced, something he had learned early on. Even the smallest currents could throw one off balance.

'Fishing in a lake is not as exciting as fishing in a stream or river.' She eyed Nimue whose eyes seem to sink, her daughter tired easily with the patience required to fish in general, she'd never make a good fisher but Tae would at least teach her a level of patience to get her through life well enough she'd never make a rash and detrimental decision, at least that's what he hoped. Nereus on the other hand seemed much like his father and she adored him for that reason. 'The fish however are more rewarding, the habit is larger and more varied and thus they have grown larger to represent this. You can not however dance about like river or stream fishing, you much stand like the heron birds do and practice patience and wait for your prey to come to you, you must lay a trap.' She looked down at her pups and caught their eyes in turn. They understood well enough, it was no good to lecture Tae believed you learnt more from life by experiencing it. She smiled encouragingly at them both and prompted, 'Well get to it then, go catch yourself a fish.'

Nimue stared at her mother, her heart sinking. She hated fishing, her mother knew that but she also knew of the skills it taught her and the importance of fishing to the pack and the tribute they offered to the evil neighbouring pack, that honour put fire in Nimue's belly, her family helped keep trouble at bay. Nimue was also old enough to know the above anything this time spent as a family unit was important and she should cherish it. Her entertainment came from the harmless competitions with her loving brother, 'Right.' she proclaimed at her mother and banged her shoulder into her brother playfully before stomping off to find a good place to attempt to stand still for a while, to mimic a Heron as mother had said.

He watched her with alert and loving eyes, his gaze flickered catching her every movement. His beautiful Tae, like the water and the fish she spoke of she was a gift to him. He adored his family and her, patience indeed, he had waited a long time in his life to find this inner peace. Sometimes he felt sorry for his brother who was so quick and charming but who lost happiness as fast as he found it. Once he had envied Musketeer his speed and charm, now he knew he wouldn't trade places with his brother for anything.

He turned away from sadder thoughts and smiled as he listened to Tae instruct the pups. He could almost see the impatience building up inside of his sweet Nimue, she was quick like her uncle and this lesson would be harder for her. His eyes moved to his son and he chuckled, Nereus was always steadfast and determined, what he could not manage with skill he tried to manage with passionate stubborn tenacity.

"Loosen up Nereus, feel the water, if your stiff you'll get sore and numb before the first fish ever swims along."

Nereus clung to his mothers words he wanted to catch the biggest fish ever! Standing still as he could he waited...and waited...and waited, it seemed like a long time for a pup, but only moments had passed. He perked his head up at his fathers words. Loosen up? Oh...he tried not to stand so braced, so stiff, his paws were still braced against the gentle current but he allowed the rest to ease up. He glanced at his sister always comparing and competing without any true rancor.
