i dont think percussion is and instrument, even though it's in a band. I'm making this poll to prove a point to my percussion playing boyfriend because clearly he thinks it is. Please share your opinion.

Percussion is not an instrument, but a group of many instruments.
What really annoys me is when people equate percussion with drums, which is completely false, myself being a mallet player primarily.
Maybe your bf took "percussion is not an instrument" as meaning that it is not a legitimate part of the band, which a lot of people seem to think. As a percussion player myself I find it irritating and a bit hurtful when people think we're not real musicians. We read music just like you wind instrument players. Maybe you should reassure him on this point.

Percussion is a classification of many instruments.
It is an instrument, no matter what your BD says.
It really ticks me off when people generalize percussion into 'bells' and 'drums' and 'shaker thingys'...which is what the entire band does at my school. >>

Okay so percussion is not a instrument but is a group of musicians. In each percussion group there can be different instruments not just bells drums and 'Shaky things...'

I don't play the percussion, but I play a variety of percussion instruments. Percussionists read music (well, the serious ones do).
Now, is this a matter of grammar/terminology confusion? Or do you think that a drum is not an instrument? I just want to be clear of what you mean sweatdrop

Anything that makes a noise can be classified as an instrument, really. Just like thunderstorms. If you actually listen, a thunderstorm can sound like an orchestration. Natures music<3
So, I think "percussion" could be classified as such.
There's a whole documentary on it, but I don't remember what its title was =/ Sorry.

while there is no instrument, to my knowledge, called the "percussion" there are many percussian instruments. in fact, most any instrument can be used percussianistically. every instrument can be considered percussian, so it would be a pretty fantastic thing indeed to discover something as "percussian" but not as an "instrument". let me know when you do this.

If they think they play a "percussion", then they're idiots.
But if they play a percussion instrument, then it's okay.
I myself can play at least 15 of them. Probably more, I just don't feel like counting off the top of my head. neutral
