I've have people telling me telling me to refer to the Color Theory for shading with painting. I was wondering if anyone could explain it to me? I'm entirely clueless and it's impossible to be a good artist without knowing. If anyone can, I'd really appreciate it.

Color theory is kind of a broad subject... but in regards to shading, I usually follow a few simple rules. Instead of using pure black for shadows and pure white for highlights, you should use darker colors. Cool tones (such as blues and purples) are good for shadows, while warmer tones (reds yellows etc) are good for highlights. Also, using less saturated colors (meaning more subdued grayer tones) in the background and more saturated colors in the foreground can help create a good sense of depth.
If you want to do a bit of reading, wikipedia has some good points on the subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_theory

Thank you so much! Would purples and blues, work for skin tone shading, too? And would I mix them with the original tone color?

Yep, they'd work great. You should definatly blend it with your origional color, that way it will look like her skin is picking up some of the shadows around it.

Aaand.. I was looking for a really good tutorial, but I couldn't find the one I was looking for... so I found this, and it makes a lot of the same points: http://gorachi.deviantart.com/art/Color-Theory-App-Tutorial-61529480
Check it out.
