One of our tenner (or quad) players was in a wreck on Saturday, involving a train.

If you guys pray, please do so, because he really needs the prayers!

His car got nicked by the train, spun, hit it again, and ran into a pole.

The railroad crossing did not have an arm, and (even though the news reports said that that crossing worked) the lights only work about half the time.

He had no broken bones, but he has major head trama and will have brain damage.

He's in the hospital now. on Sunday he had a 1% chance of making it, then it went up to 10%.
This morning he had a 20% chance, and they put him through surgery to take a piece of his skull out to relieve pressure, and now he's got a 50% chance, which is great.

He's on a feeding tube now, but their waiting for him to wake up from the chemically induced coma and respond to certain stimuli and such within the next 48 hours.

Just, please keep him in your throughts and prayers.

He's a really great kid, very dedicated to the band.

all of us are really upset, even if we didn't know him really well, the band is, as you guys probably know one big family (at least with us) (like, they kicked us out of the lobby bc we were taking up too much room... about 3/4 of the band+band parents+instructors=PACKED)

Has anyone else had an experience with an injury or death in the band? How did they/the band pull through or cope?

(kind of morbid, but it's realty, kids)

Our bd had a heart attack a year ago March. It was really scary but he came back about two months later.
Because of it we had to miss a couple of festivals, but we were okay with it as long as he was at home recovering (the first time he came back to school to visit us we were like, "Go home!! You need to rest!!!" )
Thankfully he's completely fine now. He had a doctor's appointment before school ended and they said he was totally healthy.

Though I think the worst part of it was the horrible sub director we had. Half of one of the lower bands just stopped coming to class because they couldn't stand her.

That's horrible. I'll keep him in my prayers.

Last year, in October, my BD had a seizure the day after we had a cavalcade and it was later found out that he had a tumor on his brain. They did all kinda of tests and it was later found out to be Grade 4 brain cancer, the worst of the worst.

He went through 6 weeks of chemo and radiation and not long after he finished it came back again. He had another surgery to remove it and though now he's doing better, his personality has never fully recovered.

When he was diagnosed, we knew that he wouldn't be able to make it to Championships in November. We really hoped he'd be healthy enough to come, but it was a stretch. but when we walked off the field after we preformed to go take pictures, he was standing there! The entire band was so excited and crying, including myself, and were still crying through the picture. (Everyone's face was so red)

Wow...this is all emotional stuff. The band needs to be there for each other as well as him. We havn't lost anyone yet. It would really tare the band apart if it did.

Just last week one of our drum majors was driving a car with quite a few band kids that was involved in a crash.... They were relatively okay, but it was pretty scary for all of us.... So, I can kind of sympathize..... How is he doing now??

One of our band kids, the senior bells player, was diagnosed with cancer. Quite a few kids cried when our BD broke that news.

One saturday, the kids family needed help moving (they were moving closer to his hospital) and over half the band turned out to help. We raised money for his treatment, sold t-shits- all sortsa stuff. When he managed to show up for graduation, we all cheered.

I'm so sorry for all of your losses. Two years ago, my junior year, We had the most amazing Assistant band director ever. A week before the band trip at the final practice, Jason said that he was going to have an amazing time with the rest of the band on the trip. The next day he had suffered from a massive heart attack. I had to opt out of band that year for medical reasons so I found out a little later than the rest of the band. I had to use the restroom when the rest of the band was told so I walked out of my classroom to find one of my friends crying. When I asked her what was wrong, She told me that Jason had suffered a heart attack and passed. I fell straight to my knees and bawled my eyes out with the rest of the band. When I returned to class after composing myself, i stayed quiet which was a rare thing for me. When I was asked what was wrong by a friend in class with me, I repeated the story. Everyone else in the class had heard it and some cried as well.

Last year, my senior year, We dedicated every show that we had played to him. In Loving Memory of Jason Conoway.

Wow. I haven't had many like this. I remeber in 7th or eighth grade our midlle school BD was in a car accident at lunch. He was alright, but his car was totaled. Then my section leader last year got in a car accident on her way to a night rehearsal, but she was also alright and I think she came to the rehearsal, late of course. Oh, and our percussion instructor(the one everyone actually likes) has heart problems, and went home in an ambulance at a game against our rivals. He was fine, and is back this year too. And then at a festival one of our drumline girls, a friend of mine, had a bad asthma attack and didn't have an inhaler with her, so they had to cal an ambulance and she went to the hopsital. I never want to see a friend go away in a ambulance again. it was horrible, and I was trying tnot to cry, even though we all knew she would be okay. It was just..I don't know how to explain it>.>

In a way, I kind of wish something bad would happen(though obviously I don't too bad). When she went home in an ambulance, you could see us all get a little bit closer, and start including those we didn't include before. It wasn't a big difference, but you could tell that it was there. That is really what our band needs right now It seems like we are all divided, seperate indviduals who don't help eachother. We need something to bring us together, and, as weird as it sonds, I think something like what you guys hae posted would really help to bring us closer.

Of cours, I'm not sad we don't have any deathes or cancers in our bandXD I'm just saying, it would d some good if it did happen.

i know what its like. a little more than a year ago the drumline captain/quad player was driving himself and one of our 2 snare players to the store during lunch the last week of band camp and lost control of the car. the driver's arm scraped against the road. he was ok but our snare player was ejected from the car through the windshield. both were taken to the hospital but the snare player, steven, never left.he suffered some broken bones among other things but the major thing was he had major head trauma. he stayed in the hospital for a little more than a month until he passed. its hard to go through something like that especially when the one that died is one of your closest friends. one day in school there was an announcement calling all teh members of the marching band to the band room. once everyone was there and some counselors were there the director broke the news to us. everyone broke down, including me. it was the worst thing that could have happened. he also told us his family was going to have him cremated. he gave us the date for the viewing of his body before the cremation then anyone that wanted to stay and get the crying out of their system or wanted to talk to counselors and someone about it could stay in the band room. i know its hard but i hope everything turns out for the better. also while im thinking about it, the show after he died we memorized Amazing Grace and played that either in place of our field show or before we did our field show in memory of him.

During a varsity game, one of the football players had a seizure and a heart attack. He died from it and people have been remembering all of their wonderful memories of him. I didn't know him, but if I did, I would be doing the same thing that everyone else is.

I know it isn't a band member, but that's the closest that I can relate to the topic =P

There have been a lot of deaths related to band for my school in the past couple years.

My freshman year we discovered that one of the recent graduates had just died. I forget the specifics since I didn't even know them, but everyone cried.
Last year one of the clarinets' brothers committed suicide.

Also, last year we were going around town to do our "concert on your lawn" shows. On the way to the 9th or 10th house, a car was hit. Inside were two freshmen and two juniors if I recall. Luckily they were okay.

The most recent story I've heard was from another local band. A girl named Skylar (and her mother, if memory serves) were killed in a car crash on the way home from band camp.

God bless you and your band.
