Bri rolled her eyes when her mother had handed her some coupons for school supplies. If it wasn’t on sale, her mother didn’t buy it. She folded the ad back into a neat rectangle and placed it into her over-used shoulder bag. Her mom told her to get a new one of those too, the bag she was using now had holes in the bottom corners and the flap was fraying, but Bri didn’t often listen to her mother. Bri got off the bus, winding through the isle and narrowly missed tripping over an older lady’s bags that she had set in the middle of the isle for probably the exact purpose of knocking down an unsuspecting bus rider, or at least that’s what Bri would do if she was old and had nothing better to do with her time.. She stepped onto the hot pavement, her ballet flats making little sound, and stalked off toward the store with a quick pace.

Bri was kind of scary when she set her mind to something. Now, determined to get the shopping over with, she sped past people, stalking behind them like an anxious shadow until there was room to pass. Finally she overtook a women pushing one of those multi-seated strollers and found the place she was looking for. It was a normal run-of-the-mill grocery store but her cousin worked there and her mother wanted to use the extra discount.

Bri glanced around. The place was packed with people, the checkout lines full and the intercom asking for more help on register three. Now all she had to do now was find the art supply isle.

"Finneas, this hovel will simply not appease my scholastic needs," Elegancia stated matter-of-factly as she fawned over her lacquered nails, "I demand you take me to a more upstanding shop. One that doesn't offer such pathetic deals as ninety-nine cent binders. Do 'bargain hunters' not know that they get what they pay for when it comes to quality?"

Finneas, Elegancia's trusted (and mostly silent) valet, unwaveringly complied with his Lady's orders. It was a rare thing when Finneas declined to follow his Lady's word, partly because he had something of a fatherly relationship with Elegancia, and partly because her real father would have his head on a platter were that to happen. "Of course, Lady Elegancia," was all that Finneas grunted. It was all that he had to say to appease her.

Without much delay, the high-society sixteen-year-old and her servant were off on their merry little ways. Unfortunately, Elegancia simply had to pick apart everything she felt was out of place as they made their way to the exit.

"Finneas, look at that woman!! I have never seen someone so fat!"
"Oh, my! Finneas, look!! A real Mexican! Father does not let me associate with them, does he?"
"Oh, my... I feel sorry for that teen-aged boy, Finneas... Look how many pimples he has!"

Then, right before the two were out, Elegancia stopped in front of a girl about her age. She wasn't ugly, which is why the persnickety little witch just had to pick apart her flaws more than the others. "My, Finneas! I really do dislike visiting pigstys such as these; I cannot handle the sight of girls such as her. Why, her hair does not look like it has been washed in the finest pearl extracts, how sad for her. Even sadder is that the piece of trash hanging from her shoulder is meant to be a purse! Oh, how pitiful for you!!!" Elegancia demurely chuckled and flipped her silky brown ringlets. Finneas begrudgingly humored his Lady with a flippant chuckle of his own.

Bri stood in shock for a moment, her lips slightly parted in an ‘o’, her thin eyebrows raised, hidden under her dark navy bangs. A girl stood before her, one obviously not accustomed to this “pigsty”, with her lapdog, or servant, or whatever you wanted to call the man. She could hear the girl's rude remarks come closer and closer and while Bri has had her share of dealings with bullies, she wasn't prepared for the girl's words.

It hadn’t sunk in yet, what the girl had said. Bri had never had someone come out of the blue and explode on her like that. She briefly wondered if this is how the rich children of high society talked to each other. She reached into her bag, fishing around for something. Finally finding it she drew out her hand, something silver peaked from behind her pale fingers.

Princess Snob must be around her age, Bri calculated, with a pretty ringletted head that Bri would never be able to manage with her uncooperative hair, not that she had ever tried. Her clothes looked expensive, her stance and face polished and elegant. Bri was just a little jealous.

Then Bri laughed. It was all very funny if you thought about it. She really didn’t care what this spoiled girl thought of her. She had almost just walked away, but somebody had to say something, afterall, she was talking bad about half the people in the store. And while that women was extremely fat, and that boy did need to invest in some acne cream, or maybe a couple bottles, she didn't really like this girl saying so.

“Cool it Princess, unless you want a picture of you associating with us pigs all over the newspaper.” She waved her small camera around. “Also, you might want to try the ninety-nine cents store across the street if this is a little to expensive for you. But I don't care where you go, as long as you leave, please, because you are bothering me.” She pointed out the door, her voice level and cool while her mouth was taut in a thin line. She kept her eyes on the other girl the whole time, hoping she would just leave and it would all be over. Really the last thing Bri wanted to do was get in a fight, or have her mother find out that she had just caused, no, been thrust into a scene at the store.

Without so much as a second thought, Elegancia instinctively grabbed the smallest child near and congenialy smiled for Bri, anticipating the photo she would take. "Why, how pitiful. I never knew commonfolk had to stoop so low as to take pictures of their superiors. Although, if it would go towards purchasing you a new bag, I do not mind too much!" Finneas crossed his arms in disapproval, but kept quiet as to not lose his job.

"I can see the headlines already," she chirped, "something along the lines of 'Elegancia Paulamoni D'Strella II - The World's Next Mother Teresa,' except much more wealthy, beautiful, and refined. Does that title not have a nice ring to it??" Her feathers had been fluffed when Bri called her 'princess,' a title she was very fond of. Elegancia knew sarcasm when she came across it, but it did not bother her much.

"May I ask the name of my photographer? That way I may know whom to thank when I become famous, well, even more famous, that is."

Bri was a little taken aback. The girl was quick and had a sharp tongue. She glanced at the poor kid, she didn’t envy him. Standing this close to the girl was killing her; she can’t imagine being touched by her. The young kid looked confused, glancing back toward the long line of customers to where Bri assumed his mother was.

“You probably shouldn’t touch other people’s children without permission. It usually doesn’t go over well.” And then she snapped a photo, for the hell of it. Lifting the flap of her bag, she dropped the camera back in, causing the contents of the bag to jingle in response. The sad thing was, Bri would have loved to take some real photos of Ms. D’Strella, if she wasn’t such a, well, b***h. “She has a great face” Bri thought dully.

“I think you’d better not mock any religions either.” Bri wasn’t religious, at all, but everyone knew about Mother Teresa, and she even felt a little angry that Elegancia would even compare herself to that woman. Then she offered Elegancia a stiff smile, “I’d rather not tell you my name.” Then she turned and started walking off, feeling even less like shopping now. She’d rather just get away from the Princess, very far away.

Not the reaction Elegancia had been hoping for. A catty debate would have been more satisfying, or even a screaming fit. But no, this girl preferred to take the higher road- the road less traveled by Elegancia. "W-wait! Photo-girl! I am not satisfied with the outcome of this encounter," she said while pushing the small child away like an old ragdoll that had been abandoned over a prettier fashion doll, "not in the slightest!!" It was not an often event that Elegancia did not get her favored outcome from any given situation, so it was no small wonder that she was so intrigued by Bri.

"Finneas! Quick! Get her attention! Offer her my exclusive designer's hand-bag, before she loses interest!" The bulky valet clumsily made his way to the limo and back within a solid eight seconds, fancy bag in tow. "I would honestly like you to have that bag," Elegancia said whilst rudely snatching the purse from Finneas, "because your's is honestly hideous." While her words may have been harsh, Elegancia's intentions were in the right spot. She really did want Bri to have a nicer handbag.

Bri spun around and would have ignored the girl save the small hint of desperation she caught in Elegancia’s words. She should had just outright told her that she didn’t much care if she wasn’t happy with the “outcome of this encounter”, that Bri wasn’t here for the girl’s entertainment, or her own as a matter-of-fact, but Bri’s conscience demanded she not to start another fight. She rolled her eyes, hoping to end this once and for all, but then Elegancia sent her servant-man out for a bag or something.

Bri didn’t really like receiving things from people; she could honestly get her own bag if she wanted one. Now it wouldn’t be some weird Italian designer name brand that you can’t pronounce but it would have done its job. She was about to protest, she would have even offered her name if it would get the girl to change her mind but that man was quick, and in a few seconds he was back, glittering hand bag in tow. She sent the poor man an apologetic look and returned her gaze to the Princess.

Bri genuinely smiled after Elegancia had again criticized her bag. She wasn’t going to lie, it had seen better days, and that was years ago but she could not accept the bag. How much did bags run, even at discount stores something like that was still over a hundred, which would buy her some extra memory for her laptop or something more useful than fabric used to carry personal items. She wasn’t sure exactly what to say to the girl.

“Well, I suppose I could use another bag but I absolutely cannot accept it.” She said resolutely. “We’ve only just met, and it’s not like we are good friends or anything. And well it’s not my birthday. I bet you have tons of friends who’d love it. “Bri attempted to excuse herself from receiving the gift; she didn’t even like getting them on her birthday, not that she had that many friends to get gifts from. But it really was kind of a cool looking bag. She had always liked silver. “I really can’t.” She ended lamely.

I bet you have tons of friends who' love it.

Bri's words resounded in Elegancia's mind several times before she could piece logical thoughts together. As it turned out, not dealing with the public your whole life was not a very smart idea. "Well," she said dryly, "I suppose that my other friends would rather like this bag." With a quick yet graceful flick of her hand, Finneas returned the purse to the limousine.

I bet you have tons of friends who'd love it.

"What was I thinking? Giving something so refined and beautiful to someone so... Humdrum, I suppose you could say." Elegancia crossed her arms and arched her back, her eyes piercing into Bri's. There was a reason that Elegancia's Father wanted her to attend a school with other girls, yet at this moment, she didn't care much as to the reason why. "Ohohoho~ I was only kidding, in actuality. Did you honestly think that I'd give one of my possessions to you?!"

Finneas stood near the exit, waiting to escort Elegancia out of the store. Unfortunately for him, it did not seem like her tirade was anywhere near done. Even more unfortunately for him, he would have to listen her continue on even after they left the premises.

Bri rolled her eyes, the touching moment gone. “Right, you got me there. For a second I thought you might actually have feelings. I was played for the fool. Listen, can you just go? It’s obvious you don’t want to..” Bri was going to say ‘be here’, but something in the girl’s sharp glare told her otherwise, it seemed Elegancia wanted something more from Bri, “shop here, and frankly, I don’t think anyone else really wants you here either. So just take this as my goodbye.” Bri stared right back the princess, she was tired of the bickering. She momentarily glanced at the man-servant, he was fast. She wondered how one got into the business of escorting around the rich. No that was more a bodyguard; he babysat a spoiled child who literally got everything she wanted.

She stalked past both Elegancia and her man-servant, right back out the door. She could just shop later. Her mom was going to give her hell, but it wasn’t like she couldn’t recycle some supplies from last year.

"How dare you," Elegancia huffed, "Finneas, I demand you escort me out of here at once!" The valet obliged without hesitance, whilst remaining silent. "Girls like you just prove how uncivilized people like you are," she said while thrusting the purse over her shoulder, "someone ought to teach all of your kind proper manners!!" Elegancia could do no wrong in her head, and did not see any reason for Bri to be upset. At this point, Elegancia was happy to depart from the store and did not care to learn her name- she just wanted to leave.

"Finneas, when we leave, I wish to go buy a new purse," Elegancia said sourly while walking out the door, "because this one smells like poor people now." With that, Elegancia angrily sat in the limousine and awaited Finneas to depart. The entire time that her valet took to enter the vehicle and start up, Elegancia gave Briella a look of death, as if she wanted her to vanish from existance right on the spot.

"Hmph. That is the last time I actually try and be nice to someone on a lesser social scale that I. Finneas, next time remind me not to come to a dirty pigsty such as this one!!" Finally, the two were off back to wherever it was that Elegancia lived- probably some giant palace somewhere, or something.
