My hair is very thin and very flat. I would love to give it some volume, curls would be even better. I have no patience for things like curlers though. I'd really like a perm, but I hate the thought of all those harsh chemicals being on my skin and going down the drain. Does anyone know if there are perm kits that use natural ingredients or anything like that?

If you wear it in braids, when you take them out your hair will be more wavy and have some volume to it. Even just one or two big braids. I've never heard of safe perms and nearly always you end up really damaging your hair. Often times they don't take either especially if you have really bone straight hair.
