“I want to look at dinosaur books!” Tristan exclaimed, a little bit too loudly for the city library. Fortunately, they were in the children’s section where such individuals were expected to be a bit noisier than the rest of the library’s visitors. Despite their area, Mara was showing the twins an encyclopaedia of different animal species.

“Tristan, hush,” said the young mother, her violet eyes giving the fair-skinned son a strong glare in order to prevent him from complaining.

The woman's irritation faded into oblivion as she sighed happily and sunk back into the huge red bean bag chair occupying the children’s reading area. She looked up at the high dome of the library, examining the people on the upper levels as Zephyrus excitedly turned the pages, aching to see what other fascinating animals there were in the world as well as all of the things that made each of them so unique. The cherub's wings flickered excitedly as he moved onto the reptile section. Tristan pouted his lips angrily, but decided to obey and peered over Zephyrus’ shoulder at a page dedicated to snakes.

“Cool,” he said, his look of disdain changing to one of excitement. “It says the fierce snake is the most venomous. What’s fierce mean?”

“Something mean and aggressive,” Mara replied quickly, still not changing her gaze. She smiled, completely comfortable and relaxed in the silent atmosphere of the old pages and bound information.

Nazrin was fairly easy to please. So far, she enjoyed most anything. The only exception was storytime. While she put up with listening to stories because she liked hearing Mommy read, the stories themselves bored her, and it made learning to read even more annoying. "Do I have to?" she asked, looking up at Mommy hopefully.

Vera frowned, not quite understanding. Reading was one of her favorite activities, and she wasn't sure why it hadn't rubbed off yet. "Well, yes. I'm sure we'll find something you'll enjoy, okay? Just pick some books that look cool and we'll look at them together." With a smile of encouragement, she gently pushed Nazrin towards the low shelves.

Sighing, Nazrin approached the bookshelves. There were other kids looking at books too, she noticed, which made her feel a little better; if they found something fun, maybe she would too. She smiled shyly at the nearest ones, pulling a random book out and flipping through the pages.

"They're rare," said Zephyrus passively, looking down at the photo of the menacing snake. "Only a few in the world."

Tristan gracelessly nudged himself closer to Zephyrus, crossing Mara's unassuming stomach in the process. The adoptive mother squawked in discomfort as the wind was knocked out of her by the excited little cherub.

"Oi!" she exclaimed, a bit too loudly for the quiet environment, her relaxed demeanour dissipating after the gruff gesture. "Either behave yourselves or find a new place to read!"

Tristan frowned and jumped off of the beanbag chair. "C'mon Zeph," he said directly. "Let's go find something else to read!"

Zephyrus looked up at Mara blankly before putting down the encyclopaedia and following his sibling down the aisles of children's books. Zephyrus paid little attention to the fairy tales and picture books, his eyes locking onto the rose-haired little girl down in the row parallel to theirs. From between the books, he spied her with shy curiosity as Tristan pulled out an old looking book.

"What's that?" Zephyrus asked, examining the ancient looking bound book.

"Sleeping Beauty," replied Tristan, entranced by the shining golden pages.

Nazrin put the book she was holding back and took out another one. She didn't really know what she was looking for, exactly, but none of them looked interesting so far.

When she looked up, she noticed one of the boys looking at her. She smiled back excitedly, about to wave- until she saw the book they were looking at. It looked like another one of those boring stories about girls having no fun. Nazrin hated those stories, and couldn't understand why anyone would enjoy reading about someone stuck in a tower, or under a spell.

So she frowned, and pulled out the first book she saw that looked like something completely different. A pop-up book about spiders, it was certainly different. As soon as she opened it, a huge tarantula popped out at her. Shrieking, Nazrin dropped the book on the floor and backed away as fast as she could.

The twins both jumped, Tristan dropping the old and remarkably rare copy of the book. He left it on the ground to jog over to the other side of the book shelf, his brother following closely behind him.

“Are you okay?” Tristan asked, staring at the girl and the fallen book in front of her. “Did the book attack you?”

Zephyrus furrowed his eyebrows, finding the idea preposterous and horrifying at the same time: why would a book do anything bad like attack someone? Books are good! You learn from books! They have pretty pictures! Zephyrus unthinkingly took a step towards the possibly dangerous book, not wanting to believe that it was potentially evil.

“Spiders?” he asked while examining the cover, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end. He wasn’t particularly fond of spiders. He slowly picked up the book and looked back to the girl. “What happened?”

Nazrin felt like her heart was beating a mile a minute, but when she saw what it was, she turned pink(er) from embarrassment. All of that over a cardboard bug. And those nice boys- albeit with questionable taste in books- were worried about her.

Once her breathing was back under control, she shook her head. The book didn't attack. "Not hurt," she elaborated. "Just s'prised." As the other one asked what happened, she gave an involuntary shudder. "It was big, and fast, and jumped at me..." she didn't want to admit it was scary, but she'd basically done that already by being scared. "Sorry," she added quickly, "if I d'sturbed you."

Vera looked over from behind a bookshelf. "Nazrin, sweetie, are you okay?"

"Yes, Mommy," Nazrin said quickly. She didn't want to make a big fuss over a not-that-big spider.

Not quite ready to believe her, Vera raised her eyebrows and surveyed the scene. "You sure?"

"Uh-huh." Looking at the boys, Nazrin's eyes pleaded them not to say otherwise. If they did, she would have to go, and she was finally finding something interesting. A little scary, but interesting.
