This is an amazing movie. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. You are missing out. I admit with no joke, that it is a very powerful and moving film. Though there are some rather blatant ideas shown through the movie. This movie is filmed in the setting era of 1989, December. For example:
There's a transvestite character named Angel, who is probably my favorite character. He has contracted the AIDS virus and dies halfway through the movie. His funeral is in my opinion, one of the most moving scenes in the entire film. (Played by Wilson Jermaine Heredia)
There is a bisexual anarchist named Maureen. Who is known for her rather.. promiscuous nature. She performs in an eccentric manner to protest the abusment of the homeless in New York City. (Played by Idina Menzel)
There is a lesbian lawyer named Joanne, who is currently with Maureen. And she is rather strict, but helps the main character, Mark, get a job with Buzzline (a rather sleazy show he's not proud of working for). She and Maureen are engaged but break it off at the wedding reception. Though the end up together again in the end of the movie. (Played by Tracie Thoms)
The main character, Mark Cohen, is the oddest one of the bunch. He doesn't end up with anyone at the end of the movie, but he still seems rather happy. In any case, he is the film junkie in the group. He begins the film as a documentary and ends with a tribute to the death and remembrance of Angel. (Played by Anthony Rapp)
There is Collins, an expelled teacher for his theory of Actual Reality. He winds up with Angel when he's mugged on the street and beaten to a pulp. He is also an anarchist. His theory of Actual Reality basically meant as the telling of the world to act up and fight AIDS. (Played by Jesse L. Martin)
Then there's Mimi; an eccentric stripper who works at the Cat Scratch Club. She falls for Roger, who is very cold and unwilling to show his feelings to her. But with prevail in the end, she manages to win him over. Though through the movie, she fails to mention her relationship with Benny, and he dumps her. She breaks down and returns to her addiction of heroin. This nearly kills her in the end. She dies for a moment and is graciously brought back to life. (Played by Rosario Dawson)
(Which is why I hate her. I wish she would've died rather than Angel.)
And there's Roger, a love torn musician. He used to be on the top of the music charts. He met his former girlfriend, April, as she was a fan, and they fell in love. She was also a heroin addict. Months later she was tested and revealed to have the AIDS virus. He too has AIDS. Though April ends up dying. He is currently mourning the loss and Mimi is not helping. Though upon knowing that she also has to take AZT, he realizes what he really feels for her. (Played by Adam Pascal)
Then there's Benny. According to the movie, he lived with Mark, Roger, Collins and Maureen before he got married to the daughter of a wealthy corporation. He know wants to turn 'Tent City' into a recording studio. (Tent City being where the homeless live.) His wife's Akita, Evita, is killed by Angel who was paid to play her drums until the dog barked itself to death. He also dated Mimi three months before she met Roger. (Played by Taye Diggs)
THIS IS A MUSICAL.
