I love your country and want to move there. Please tell me what I should do to go about doing this.

What's got you wanting to go?

Lea Fealith I've been so close to australia but never visited. Maybe someday. What's got you wanting to go? My unit went out there for a joint exercise with the Aussie Army, so we got to spend a few days relaxing in town. And what I remember from when I wasn't wasted, it was a beautiful and fun place. razz

I'm pretty sure Kav and I are the only Aussies left around PA, not that there were many of us in the first place... xd Only Elideth and dragonblaze33, if anyone remembers them.
Oh, where did you guys go? Townsville maybe? Or Sydney?
Anyway, that's a pretty massive question. I wouldn't even know where to start. xd Do you want to work here? Do you know where you want to live? Any extra detail at all?!

Um, but if you're really serious, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website is probably a good place to start. There's a lot of info on there, including all the application forms and everything, and this visa wizard can help you figure out which one applies: http://www.immi.gov.au/visawizard/Obviously, you need to know whether you plan to move permanently or for a couple of years. It's a lot easier to get in if you meet certain skilled/occupation requirements... But if you just want to work and travel for a year or so, there shouldn't be much of a problem.

Well, we were supposed to go to Townsville, but they decided their city was too good for us, so we went to Cairns, and then Brisbane.
And thank you, that looks like a good place to start.
If I do move there, it would probably be on a more permanent timeframe. Maybe not for life, but it'd be way more than a year. What skilled/occupation requirements do you mean?

Well, I'm not an expert on visas, so I don't know if there's other alternatives, but I'm guessing you'd be applying for a skilled worker visa. You can either get sponsored by an employer or you have certain skills that are on this skilled occupancy list (for example we're in need of nurses and tradies) so they'll accept you.
Whereas the requirements for a 12 month working holiday visa are less strict: http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/462/

Lord TinDragon Well, we were supposed to go to Townsville, but they decided their city was too good for us, so we went to Cairns, and then Brisbane. I was up in Townsville a month or so ago. A US Navy ship was on leave while we were there, so we saw a few sailors and Army guys hanging around town. xp

Well, there was quite a few IT things on the list I saw, so maybe that'll work. Although, by the time I actually get around to doing this the list will probably be completely different. >.<
The temporary visa thing looks promising too, if the more permanent idea doesn't work out.
Thanks for the info!

No worries! If you have any other questions just make a poll. xd I talk about Australia far too much anyway, so it's good to have a valid reason to do so. ^.^

shells_of_sand Lord TinDragon Well, we were supposed to go to Townsville, but they decided their city was too good for us, so we went to Cairns, and then Brisbane. I was up in Townsville a month or so ago. A US Navy ship was on leave while we were there, so we saw a few sailors and Army guys hanging around town. xp That was the USS Denver. I was on the Essex, which is a much bigger ship and the reason we got turned away. (Apparently Townsville only has room for two ships of that size, and the spots were reserved.) So our ship and another ship about the size of the Denver took off to Cairns. No idea why the Denver decided to be unique, but they did end up going to Townsville for whatever reason. Actually had a couple of buddies on that ship too... (and for the record, they were probably Marines you saw, not Army. razz ) Edit: Although it was closer to two months ago, so maybe you saw some other ship...

Oh wow, so you were actually here recently! It's really weird to think that you were in the same vicinity at the same time.
It's really nice up North at that time of year though. I wouldn't want to live there in the Summer/wet season! It gets really humid. Brisbane isn't too bad, because it's a bit lower down.
What do you do in the forces? Men in army print are kinda all the same to me. >.> I have no idea where the army base in Melbourne is, I don't think it's very large, so I dont have a lot of familiarity with them...

Yeah, the weather was awesome. It was actually a little cooler than I expected it to be (just knowing that it's winter and not summer on the other half of the world doesn't really kick in until you go from one to the other) but very nice. I'm a communicator. It's actually a lot more complicated than that, but since there's some information I'm not supposed to talk about online, and because I'm lazy, we'll leave it at "I talk on radios." :p

the old Commonwealth still have strong ties.
maybe you could go to someplace relaxed and negligent like Jamaica, and then bounce from there over to Australia?
it's just a thought

A lot of people got into Australia by moving to New Zealand for 5 or so years, and then coming over here. And the Brits have recently tightened the rules for Aussies going over there. sad
