A 5-year-old boy has died from injuries suffered when he took the brunt of a lightning strike that also injured his mother and a 3-year-old playmate.

Kyus Caines passed away shortly after 8 p.m., Hospital for Sick Children spokesperson Judy Noordermeer confirmed to the Star.

The boy was at Brampton's Centennial Park on Aug. 12, when witnesses say a bolt of lightning — described by some as a terrifying ball of fire — struck the 5-year-old boy, blasting him to the ground and knocking down his mother Dulcineia and his 3-year-old playmate.

Carrying his metal scooter over his shoulder at the time, Kyus took the brunt of the lightning strike.

He was burned down the left side, left leg and foot, his grandmother told the Star.

His playmate was also sent to hospital in critical condition but released last week. He had been rapidly improving since the lightning strike, being upgraded to serious, then good condition when he was released.

Father Oral Caines, 30, held vigil at his son's bedside along with Dulcineia, 26, who joined as soon as she was released from Brampton Civic Hospital.

"I wish it happened to me instead of him," Oral told the Star as Kyus lay in critical condition.

Unfortunately, most people taking a direct strike of lightning don't survive.

And I have a silly question, Tony. Was it really necessary to post this particular article? I mean, with all the others you have in your arsenal, did you have to put one in about a child being killed? rolleyes

I know this is a late reply, but, I think this articles only reminds us of how precious life is and that we can not take it for granted. Life is too short and for some it is shorter.

I miss everyday that my son is not with me.
(he is at his grandmothers so he can go to school)
On the weekends I hold him tighter and longer and forget about some cleaning so I can be with him.
