Praise to Him With Strings...

If you give me two, three, or four strings I can pick alternate pcik that with speed to make Randy Rhoads jump back, but for my life I can't hit single strings with it. I can get the angle I need to go fast, I end up catching the string at 90 degrees and deaden the string and it just sounds like crap. (discovered when I got to the speed picking in Jimmi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner and then when I tried my hand at Cray Train) Anyone have some advice or technique they care to share?

...oh, by the way I'm Awesome!

Using a thinner pick helps me.

If you can do it on multiple strings, you can do it on one string.

...Isn't multiple string tremolo supposed to be harder than multi-string? I can do both, but I always found single string both faster and easier... I use a 1mm pick though... If that helps at all.

I actually have the same problem. It's a matter of control. I would suggest just starting slower than you're used to, maintaining control the entire time, and slowly speeding up without losing any control.

I agree with the last post, maintain total control of your right hand and force the pick to STAY LEVEL as you strike up and down. Start slow and pick it up from there. Another thing to watch is the anchoring of your right hand. People anchor their right hand when they are playing mostly on the heavier strings and then 'float' (as it were) when playing on the thinner ones and doing 6 string runs. Maybe you are still in 'float' mode when you are trying to do it on one string. I don't know your picking technique but you should take a look at that. I use my ring finger and pinky of my right hand and post then on the humbucker frame so that way my right hand has a pivot point and can feel the distance traveled. Sort of a GPS technique for the right hand.

That... actually sounds exactly like what I do. I agree completely. XD

What my teacher suggested, was to just practice alternate pick one open string, and only one string. Work on a steady, even rhythm, and work on technique. The speed should come with time.
