Zoude stretched out on the crushed velvet sofa, languidly unfurling herself over its length, looking disturbingly like a large, wild cat at rest. Today was not a court day. The king was nowhere to be seen, the ladies were all shut up in their homes, and the lords that Zoude was particularly interested in were all off hunting, cavorting, gallivanting. There was simply nothing to do but rest.
Or was there? She straightened as she remembered, somewhere in the hollow recesses of her memory, a dim conversation (it had been rather one-sided) with Locke. He had been rapturously going on and on about some Tabula or some such thing. She grown tired of it quickly and tuned him out. But Tabula were people... or people-like, at any rate. They were able to talk and socialize.
She decided she would try to catch one and have a bit of fun with it. Zoude bounded off the sofa, ever graceful, and gathered up her skirts. They all resided in that wing of the palace where Locke always sequestered himself. She made for that side of the palace, chin up as always, expression haughty and determined.

Damaris was shyly slinking about, having nothing really to do. He didn't know anyone, and he was too shy to make himself a proper introduction. Besides, who would want to talk to him? He walked through the wing, looking for someone to talk to, and possibly become friends with. He didn't quite understand the concept of friends, if he had his search would have been more successful.
His blue eyes wandered the hall. Nothing. He had no one he could relate to--and thus no one could relate to him.

Oh. There was one right there. She pounced.
Before Damaris would have known it (or so Zoude thought; she prided herself on her stealth), Zoude was at his side, her voice in his ear. "Hello Tabula." There was no mistaking that. The boy was so very pale; paler than Zoude herself, even though she spent all her time inside or under dainty little parasols. His hair had no colour to it, and his eyes were a clear blue. She'd heard gossip that they had holes in them (like Swiss cheese, she wondered?) and was curious as to where they were on this boy.
"You should always introduce yourself first to a lady." She straightened and faced him head on.

Damaris indeed, hadn't noticed Zoude. He had been too busy looking around the wing again, though he had seen it several times. He had a curiousity that wouldn't settle. Once she spoke, he whirled about to stare at her. He was just as curious about her as she was about him.
"My name is Damaris." He said, without hesitation. It was one of the only things he knew for certain about himself. "What do they call you?" He asked only out of curiousity, he no intention of being polite. Of course, if he had known what 'polite' was, he probably would have tried.

She noticed him staring at her and preened, nose in the air and smoothing her glossy black hair self-consciously. Not that there was any real reason to, of course, the boy having no power, but she appreciated the attention all the same.
"Damaris..." A nice enough name, Zoude thought. But as he rudely followed up the introduction with a poorly-phrased question directed at her, she pursed her ruby lips.
"Damaris," she began haughtily, "You must learn how to address ladies properly. You must say, ' My lady, may I ask your name?' like a gentleman." Not that he was in any danger of becoming a gentleman, she thought, amused.

Damaris paused in confusion. He had assumed she was like he was, a tabula. But with closer inspection, he could see that she was not. She had too much color. "I am sorry," he apologized, though he didn't sound very sorry at all. "My lady, may I ask you your name?"
He was oblivious, and not very intelligent when it came to this kind of thing. "What is a gentleman?" He asked, tilting his head slightly like a confused child. Did he want to be one? This woman seemed to imply that he should, even if he didn't. "You are very beautiful," he remarked, blinking at her. He'd never seen someone like her. Someone so colorful.
