Announcement July 2010

zOMG! News!

Number One!

If you would stalk the zOMG! Forum, you would notice all of the discussion and activity going about. One upcoming change to zOMG! is the opening of the Barton Coliseum!
The date that it will be opened is unknown but we're hoping that it opens soon!
If you want to know more about the coliseum, open zOMG! hop on a server (A clan server if you can please) go to Barton Town, go to the Coliseum, go to the North Gate area and talk to the NPC named Deva and she'll give you the exact details.

Here is an Image of the coliseum within!

Number Two!
Every Friday, the Developers host a meeting(s) throughout the day to interact and answer questions from users, and maybe throw us a bone of information. OR use their arcane Developer powers to summon the ALMIGHTY Landshark at CL 10.0 for our entertainment. I made a thread annoucement in the clan pertaining the subject and it would be AWESOME if you guys posted in it with input and possible ideas for the meetings.

Here is an example image of the meetings

Number Three!
Have you ever been to Buccaneer Boardwalk and saw those closed off gates? Well guess what! Those gates in a a few months or potentially next year will be gone FOREVER! Why you ask? Because they are expanding zOMG! into the Boardwalk! Yay! There will be quests, NPCs, hopefully new animated, and possible minigames.

Here is an image of the Boardwalk!

The Last and Most IMPORTANT
Landshark has been classified as female. [ JK ] has told us it is a she. Sorry Elf but I guess you're a lesbian... unless you plan on divorcing Landsharniqua or Landy Gaga or Taquayquay as me and others have named her. We love you anyways Elf! heart

I'll be sending out more announcements concerning the clan itself tomorrow!

Want to know what's changing? Stalk Qix to get it first hand! Qixter's posting history is very useful! Dang Qix deleted the updates archive.

Double-Orb prices got reduced! Deluxe version is now 299 GC, and regular version is 124 GC. (8/5/09)

ALL Powerups Soulbound ALL of them including the ones I was using as clan welcome gifts *sniff* The only way to get em with gold now is buying those zOMG bundles which have skyrocketed. You can still get them with cash.

Double Orbs Items now available in Backalley Bargains!

Icons on users (1/21/09) Little circles appear in the lower left corner of the avi when you select a user now. Green means ready for crew invite, red means they don't want a crew and blue means they're already in a crew! Very useful when crewing people!

New Quests (Many of these seem very glitchy still!! D: )
Aqueduct Quests 3 New Quests. Frank asks you to salvage 5 biochips from the aliens, rewards orbs and sometimes powerups!
The Starwatchers want a Vox from the Preada
the GIB wants you to kill 10 Terrors and 10 Preda int he warzone (this one is still highly glitched)(March-2009)

Otami Quest April, 200 cool
Blaze now seems to give a repeating quest to hunt Coatl feathers... if you can get it to work.
Also a new NPC is giving out a repeatable to hunt spear heads. Find her up along the path to the Blood Tree.

Bassken Lake Quest (Jan 15, 200 cool Hunting Carrion Fluffs for the guard near the north gate of barton! Attack the trash cans to make them appear!

New Sewers Quests (Dec 23, 2008?)
NPC: Elisabeth
Quest: Defend the Town - this lets you go back in the sewers and get goo and badges too. RING PICK!
Quest: Gaian About Town - This is broken for many people, but if you can make it work you pick a ring!

Zen Gardens Quests (Jan 15, 200 cool There's a quest to hunt My for Katsumi and a quest from the guard to find Katsumi. I succeeded in the weave quest, but it looks like the quest to find Katsumi only works if you get it when you've never talked to her yet. You also may also pick up a quest to "Dim the Lanterns" from the guards outside of Barton, and one to Turn Down the Drums from the guards on the opposite side.

You may want to check for some of the early quests! I actually somehow picked up some early ones like Mark's Ring over again. o.O

Quest Changes

Landshark's CL has been lowered to CL 7.5. Therefore, you must be CL 7.0 or lower in order to fight Landshark.

End Boss encounter has been changed. If everyone in the crew gets dazed during the encounter, your character will be removed from the EB chamber. When your crew returns to the EB chamber, the whole EB fight starts from the tail. Due to this change, EB health totals have been reduced so crews can complete the encounter in one piece.

Kat's Kokeshi Doll, the She-Wolf, Papa Saw and Duneslam have all become instanced. This means that you go into a small separate screen with just your crew to fight them. All 3 seem to work similarly. They start out like the hive and you have to survive several waves of dolls or wolves whose numbers depend on how many of your crew is inside the instance. Then you get the actual Mini Boss. CL caps are 4.1 for Kat's Doll, 5.1 for She-wolf and unknown yet for Papa Saw. Also, the miniboss will NOT appear after the waves end if someone in the instance is too high!

EndBoss is being slowly changed. Scaredy Cat no longer seems to work on him.. But if you do beat him, he gives a one time, pick of any CL10 ring! This is only if you've not already beat him 4 times!

And this just in...
I feel like Cindy Donovan! Lol!

Here's a sneak-peak on the next update that's coming.

This isn't everything, but it's a good chunk of it. smile

The following rings have been improved for framerate reasons:
* Wish Ring
* Water Balloon
* Duct Tape
* Fire Rain
* Dervish
* Turtle

Back Alley Bargains now in-game!
PowerUps can now be purchased anywhere, at any time! The Back Alley Bargains store has been brought in-game so that you never need to run out of PowerUps, even if you just used your last one during a Lair fight!

Shallow Seas updates!
The Shallow Seas chain of areas has been overhauled.
* A challenge level is now chosen when you enter Shallow Seas from the Whirlpool. The same difficulty applies all the way through from Shallow Seas to the final boss encounter.
* The barnacle maze at the front of Shallow Seas was rearranged for better gameflow.
* The Barnacle Fluff and Brain Clam are much tougher now. They are scaled as LTs.
* The Sea Spout LTs (Guardians) have tougher attacks now and can both damage *and* sleep you.
* Lorelei can now sleep you also (in addition to damage).
* The Grunny Sub LTs (sub-commander) have tougher attacks now.
* The Sea Spouts, Barnacle Fluffs, Anchor Bugs, and Brain Clams are intermixed throughout the Shallow Seas region.
* Watch out for patrols. There are lots of them in Shallow Seas now and it's a MUCH more challenging area if you're not very careful.
* There are new placements of monsters in both Ledge and the Sealab Complex.
* It is assumed that you are in a crew of 5-6 players for this adventure series. Getting through the areas with fewer players will be extremely challenging, if not impossible.
* There are new surprises around the security switches and main sealab door in the Complex area. wink
* The Robofish do NOT respawn naturally...BUT...if you are party-wiped while fighting the end boss monster, then the tunnels are replenished before your bodies are "dragged back for the Robofish to eat".
* All chest rewards, as well as the boss encounter rewards, are scaled based on the difficulty level chosen.

New Quests!
Quests have been added to give more logical transition from Bass'ken Lake to the Old Aqueduct.
* Logan -> Concerned Citizen ("A Concerned Citizen" )
* Ryan -> Roderick ("True Rumors?" )

These quests are only available if the player has NEVER talked to the NPC in Old Aqueduct (Logan's tasks are only available if you've never talked to the "Concerned Citizen", and Ryan's tasks are available only if you've never talked to Roderick.)

Daily Chance NPCs in zOMG!
There are NPCs in every zone that offer you a Daily Chance just for speaking to them. Daily Chance rewards include gold, orbs, items, and (very rarely) other things like PowerUps, a pack of mini-monsters for your Aquarium, or even one million gold!
* Barton Town - Nicolae
* Village Greens - Dina
* Bill's Ranch - Rubella (only available after her quests are completed)
* Zen Garden - Burton
* Bass'ken Lake - Rocko
* Old Aqueduct - Spirit
* Buccaneer Boardwalk - Bob
* Gold Beach - Marcy
* Otami Ruins - Jerry

You can visit each character listed above once per day and get a different Daily Chance reward from each of them.

zOMG Upcoming Changes!!

New Recipes coming? As of March 31st 2010 here's what JK says about adding new recipes that will require orbs and other recipe items to make:
JKs announcement about new recipes

Feb 12th
[NPC] Cresento
Dearest Gaians,

Of course you know the meaning of this posting. I am here to inform you of another update for zOMG! I trust you look as forward to the upcoming enhancements as I do.

Pleasantries aside, here is a list of changes you will see in the update:

Ring Changes:
Sweetheart Ring - In celebration of Valentine's Day, the Sweetheart ring has been made available in Back Alley Bargains and the Cash Shop. Sweetheart will increase the maximum health on yourself and allies and will play a special effect on your avatar for its duration - it also won't conflict with Meat, allowing your maximum health to go even higher! Additionally, the Sweetheart ring will never be soulbound and is only available for a limited time.

Buff Rings - Buff rings will only affect one Crew at a time. To buff your own Crew, target yourself or another member of your Crew. To buff another Crew, target a member of that Crew.

Healing Halo - The amount of Health regenerated by Healing Halo has been increased significantly.

Turtle - Turtle will now block 100% of incoming damage for a shorter duration of time. Higher rage ranks increase the duration of the effect. Turtle will not prevent you from taking damage if you are kneeling, though.

UI Changes:
Move to Target - When using a ring on an out-of-range target, you will now automatically move into range.

Ring Auto-Selection - An option has been added to allow players to choose whether or not to use this feature.

General Changes:
Knockback - We've reduced the number of monsters with knockback (especially those in mini-boss lairs) and lowered the knockback distance of the monsters that still have it.

Daily Chance - Nicu's Daily Chance in Barton Town has been replaced with a Daily Chance Wheel at the South Gate.

Gnome Courier - The Gnome Courier has been made easier to find, and the most likely location of finding him will now be marked on the map.

Gnome General - The Gnome General event has been reworked slightly so players participating will more consistently receive credit for their efforts.

Bug-A-Thon: Two weeks ago, Gaia staff participated in an internal bug-fixing event called bug-a-thon. As part of the event, the zOMG! team fixed over fifty bugs which are all included in this update.

Enjoy!

A couple known issues:

2)The gold border for ring sets is not always displaying correctly. This is a visual bug only - you're still getting the ring set bonus. smile

Nov. 5, '09:
Qixter
Greetings, zOMGaians.

The process of envisioning a world for you has been a great experience. Working non-stop with the dev team for 2.5 years to extend Johnny Gambino's family problems for you all has been the ride of a lifetime for me.

"zOMG!" is something of a miracle. Almost no one on this team had ever made a game before. No one at all, anywhere, had ever made a true MMO in a non-downloadable Flash environment before. And I don't know of any MMO ever created to specifically integrate into an already-existing social community, especially one as unique and cool as Gaia. (Plus the whole 15-person dev team thing. That has to be a world record for "smallest MMO dev team size".)

So although I came to Gaia specifically to build such a world, now that 98% of the work is done, this leaves me in something of a bind. I build big projects. Usually ridiculously huge ones and usually from scratch. But Gaia already has a big world of its own now and doesn't need another one.

It would be fun to keep supporting this world for years to come, but the truth is that Gaia is filled to the brim with creative people that can do as good a job as me (maybe better) now that the virtual world is built up into a solid shape.

That means it's time for me to move on. Other worlds still need to be created and my work in that area isn't done yet. So I'm gonna go do that.

There are still a few new things coming from me in the next few weeks. (A rewrite of the Fountain and Goof games, specifically.) You'll probably hear from me when those roll out, and I'll post a Journal entry once I find my new gig so you know where I went. (Blatant plug: If you like "zOMG!", you'll probably like whatever I build next. It'll certainly be a radically different game but design style is a "stamp" and you'll see "Q-ness" in all my games.)

Anyway, I just wanted you all to know where I had gone. It's been an honor and a privilege to help virtually realize some of your dreams into entertainment, and I hope you'll keep your love for the unique virtual world you have here.

See ya in the next game! Go Gaia!

-- David "Qixter" Georgeson
Sr. Producer & Creative Director
"zOMG!" (Apr 2007 - Nov 2009)

(thread left open for posting)

P.S., This will be a fairly gradual goodbye. I'll be helping the team with some script debugging and being a consultant until the end of the year. But my hand is off the tiller now. smile

Halloween Event starts tomorrow!

Qixter
It's finally here!

VOIP added to zOMG on Oct 22!

Qixter
Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP)!
Otherwise known as "yakking to your Crewmates over a microphone!"

But it's very easy to use it. This is an "opt-in" feature, meaning that you do have to download a small app if you want to use it. When you get to the World List page (where you select a server at the start of the game), you'll see a large button talking about installing VOIP. Click that button and follow the on-screen instructions.

It's painless. Do it! smile

After that, there's nothing to activate at all. You just play the game, and anytime you join a Crew, you can talk to your Crewmates over your microphone. Everything else is handled auto-magically for you!

Some features:
- When anyone in your Crew speaks, their avatar portrait on the Crew List flashes. Also, their player dot on your PDA Map will flash. This helps you identify which voice belongs to which avatar.
- You have the option to mute/unmute any player. (It's a button on the Crew List.)
- If someone is really annoying, then you can also just kick them from your Crew (at which point they can't talk to you via VOIP any longer).
- If you're not the leader, then another option is that you can always quit an annoying Crew if their voice chat is bugging you.
- (And soon!) You'll have the option to ignore any player. Doing so will prevent you from ever hearing their voice again.

Please note: No customer service support is available for the VOIP feature. If someone bothers you while using VOIP, the mute, kick options (and later, ignore!) are more effective, and far timelier, than any customer service feature could be. Please use them instead. smile

Using Push-to-Talk (reducing "noise" when Crewing)
VOIP defaults to "always on". That means that it's always picking up noise around you and broadcasting it to all your Crewmates.

You can make things a LOT quieter, if you move to "push-to-talk" instead.

Basically, that means that you have to push a button to turn on the microphone. Like a walkie-talkie sort of setup.

To use Push-to-Talk, follow these steps:

1) After you install VOIP, look in the lower, right of your screen. There should be a "Vivox Voice Manager".

2) Right-click that Manager. Choose "Configure Push-to-Talk".

3) Click on the box shown there. Press a key that you want to use. (For example, I use "T" usually.)

4) Then click the "Enabled" button and click "OK".

That's it! Now, when you want to talk, just hold down the button you selected until you're done, and then release that button to stop broadcasting.

Voice Fonts!
But wait, there's more!

Not everyone wants their normal voice to be heard by other players. So there is also a GCash feature available called "Voice Fonts".

Basically, these are filters that twist and distort your voice to sound like someone other than what you really are, including things like:
- Male to Female
- Female to Male
- Radio Announcer
- Military Helmet microphone
- Super Deep Voice
- and more.

See the "Shop" inside the game to check them out and hear what they sound like when you speak through them!

Action Packs are now soulbound (09/01/09)
Qixter
Hey, folks,

Just a heads-up to let you know some changes have been made with the zOMG! Action Packs.

The first things is that they're all soulbound now. (Just like PowerUps, which is most of what they contain.)

The second thing is that *any future Action Packs redeemed* will not have the same contents that you're used to seeing.

Any **existing Action Packs will be unchanged**. The item changes only occur in any *new* Action Packs redeemed from here on out.

FYI so you're not surprised.

You can visit each character listed above once per day and get a different Daily Chance reward from each of them.

The Shallow Sea area starts out initially sensitive to the number of crewmembers in the area, so some soloing is still possible, especially when on "Easy" challenge rating.

The monsters don't respawn in the same way that they used to either, so working through the areas in the sequence is a faster process than it used to be.

Ultimately, you're just going to have to play it a bit before you can really assume whether it's better or not. (Tester opinions so far are saying it's "better".)

You'll get to decide for yourselves soon enough. smile

Second Events Announcement:

Qixter
The Mini-Event update is complete! Servers are up!

Enjoy!

-- Q.

====================================
About the mini-events:

Keep in mind that the mini-events are randomly-timed in random places.

Even though there are 16 events, you'll only be seeing from 1-5 of them per hour, depending on what time of the day it is. (More events happen during the "prime time" part of the day and fewer in the off-hours because the events are a LOT more fun when more players are on-line.)

So they're different than, say, mini-boss lairs, which are available 24/7. These mini-events occur once in a while, and you need to be in the right place. They're designed to add randomness to the game. (And we'll be pushing that much further with succesive launches in the future.)

SPECIAL NOTE: Some of the mini-events have unique rules associated with them. If you have questions while playing, or are just curious, be sure to look up the "Random Mini-Events" section in GAME HELP after the update on Thursday.

============================================
Update Details:

Random events will occur in various zones now at random times, more in prime time than in off-hours. If you are in the proper zone when it occurs, you will be notified so that you're aware that it's happening. NOTE: This is just the start of the event structure. We'll be adding more and more events...some of them quite large!...in the coming months.

Instructions and details of the events are supplied to players in the zone when the event begins, but as a teaser for the sort of things you can expect to see, here's a list of the events:

- Barton Town : Aerial Bombardment! (CL 2.0 and below)
- Village Greens : Rotary Menaces! (CL 2.0 and below)
- Bill's Ranch : Grucken Chuckin'! (Unlimited CL!)
- Zen Gardens : Deadman Spies! (CL 4.0 and below)
- Bass'ken Lake : BuzzKill! (CL 5.0 and below)
- Old Aqueduct : Bug Breakout! (CL 6.0 and below)
- Gold Beach : Trophy Hunters! (CL 7.0 and below)
- Otami Ruins : Saving the Spirits! (CL 8.0 and below)

And every zone also has occasional Orb Spills where Charge Orbs begin appearing for a short period of time, available to anyone that can grab them first. Scramble!

ADDITIONALLY

* The Night Patrol (flying giftboxes) in Bass'ken Lake now spawn twice as often, but you must now also suppress to CL 5.0 or lower to fight them.

* The chapter end-boss encounter has been changed. If everyone in your Crew gets Dazed during the encounter, your unconscious bodies will be moved away from that encounter area. When you recover and return, the fight will begin again from the start. This means that you'll need to fight the tail, body, and head all in one session now. NOTE: Health totals on the EB body parts have been reduced to adjust for the need to do the encounter all in one piece.

* The logic (AI) of the Robofish have been changed. They are a bit faster than they were previously (so they can catch you) and they now have various ways of reacquiring targets, so the tactic of "run through the tunnel" won't work nearly as well as it used to do.

* The logic (AI) of monsters in general that have multiple attacks has been improved so they will change between the attacks on occasion and use them more logically. The upshot of this is that you may see a few attacks that weren't getting used very often, and some monsters may feel a bit different in game (like the Predator Prairie Pups). This is the first in a series of improvements to the AI system that will occur over the next couple of months.

* You must now be CL 7.0 or lower to fight Landshark. Landshark itself is 7.5, and a Boss, so be prepared for a tough fight.

* Ring Buffer and Double-Orb PowerUp durations have been reduced from 60-minutes to 20-minutes. See this thread for details of the compensation program for current owners.

* An exploit has been sealed. When a higher-CL player buffs or heals a lower-CL player, the buff/heal is applied at the CL of the target. This prevents veteran players from reducing the difficulty of encounters to ridiculously easy levels, but still allows them to participate/help without suppressing their CL.

* The Papa Saw encounter now requires players to have been involved in the scenario before Mama Saw spawns in order to gain rewards at the end of the encounter.

* Suppression Feature Added! You can now go to the MENU and choose "Suppress CL" in order to downgrade your current overall CL to a lower setting. NOTE: You still have to go to the Null Chamber in order to raise your CL back up to normal, but this feature makes it very easy to suppress to a required CL when traveling or playing the mini-events.

* Graphics Options Added! You can now turn off the sillouhetting system (that shows your sillouhette and your target's sillouhette when behind an object), as well as changing settings on the ring animations within the game. Ring Animation settings are : All (just like currently implemented), Crew Only (shows only ring animations from members of your Crew), and Self Only (shows only ring animations that you trigger or which directly affect yourself). These settings will allow players with slower framerate issues to easily toggle these features off in order to save framerate.

* Random Mini-Event Rules in GAME HELP: The GAME HELP feature now has a section called "Random Mini-Events". That section describes all the game rules that are different in the various events and gives you better tips on how to play them and maximize your rewards. It is *highly recommended* that you take a look at this if you are confused while playing any of the Mini-Events.
