Gemmae sipped from a small creek in the deep forest, reflecting on the year that had passed since she had made her home here. In that time she had met Namid of the Kawani, her children had grown up and left, and Moltres had finally taken the hint that he was unwelcome in her life.
Now, the summer sunlight filtered down through the trees and a cool breeze was touched with the first bare hints of autumn. Soon enough would come winter, and it would be a full year since she had come to the Kawani lands. Perhaps it was finally time to stop remembering the past and turn towards the future.

Elena made her way along the paths of the forest to where she knew, without really having to think about it, there was a creek. The creek was a good place to drink, and she was, she found, very thirsty. But, as she neared, she became aware that there was someone else already here. Elena was certainly not afraid of strangers, but it was peculiar for her to come across other people, and she slowed her pace some as she came into view. "Hello," she said.

The purple unicorn looked up at the soft, unfamiliar voice. The stranger was another mare, white with salmon and gold accessories that the scattered beams of sunlight brought a cheerful gleam to.
"Why, hello!" Gemmae replied. It had been so long since she last met anyone new, especially another mare, that she was very excited for this kind of meeting. "What brings you to this part of the forest?"

Ah, friendly. That was good.
Elena trotted over, and helped herself to a drink before she spoke. "I live here," she said. "Well, nowhere in particular, but more or less here."
She gave the other mare a careful look, trying to recall what exactly she was reminded of, before it hit her. She said many things as they occurred to her, since most of the time she wasn't speaking to anyone in particular, so she said this aloud. "You look sort of like someone else I met," she said. "Her mane was orange, though, and she had golden wings..."

"You do? Then I'm surprised we didn't meet sooner," the purple mare replied cheerfully.
Gemmae was a bit confused when she caught the white mare eyeing her, until the stranger spoke again. "Oh! You've met my daughter Canace? How is she? What is she up to? Has she met any boys?" The unicorn was slowly realizing that she had craved some kind of contact with somone who could talk back. Namid was great, but the human wasn't one of those who could understand Soquili.

Elena gave this some thought.
"She was pregnant," she said presently. "I guess she must have met a boy. It was a while ago." She flicked her tail absently. Clearly, she saw nothing wrong with sharing this piece of information. If the unicorn really was the mother of the mare she'd met, then it was only natural she share.

"She was what!?"
It was the reaction of any loving mother. Her baby girl had met a boy, gotten knocked up, and had the kids without her mother having any idea at all! She felt so...so isolated. And Canace...her little chatterbox Canace hadn't even bothered to tell her!
"Why didn't she teeeeeeeell me?" the unicorn half wailed, half-sobbed. Was it so much to ask to be told she'd be a grandmother?

Elena stared. This wasn't the reaction she'd expected, but then, she didn't often seen many other soquili.
"Aren't you happy?" she asked, honestly puzzled.

"Of course I'm happy!" Gemmae continued sobbing and not quite crying. "I'm ecstatic! I can't wait to see my grandchildren!"
"I just want to know why she didn't tell me!" The last came out more exasperated than anything else. It really was just like Canace...but really. She'd've thought the girl would be more conscientious of her mother!

"She said she was worried about what you'd think." Elena was silent a moment. This was far more complicated than most of her days went, and she wasn't sure she appreciated the difference. "I don't know why she didn't tell you."

"Worried? About what I'd think?" Gemmae snorted in exasperation. "Of course I'm worried about her...I never hear from her anymore!"
She nodded at Elena. "You don't know why she didn't tell me, I don't know why she didn't tell me, no one but Canace knows why and she's not here to tell." The unicorn sighed.
"Well, you're here, and telling me so much that I wouldn't have known, how about telling me about you?"

Elena was puzzled at the sudden change in topic to herself.
"My name's Elena," she said. "I live here." She was silent a long moment, not sure what else she could add to that. "I live here alone. That's about all."

"Really? You're that local? Then why haven't we met before?" The purple Soquili was quiet for a few moments as she puzzled over that.
"Well, here's a belated welcome to the forest then. I'm Gemmae, and I live nearby with a human named Namid." She cocked her head to the side and added, "Truly, you should come by sometime as Namid is very skilled in combing out one's mane."

Elena considered. "Thank you," she said, though she wasn't sure she really wanted to take Gemmae up on the offer. "It's nice to meet you."
She paused before adding, "I tend to avoid people, mostly," she said. "I like being alone. I've met more than the usual number lately, though."

"It's no problem at all," Gemmae replied cheerfully, though it worried her to see that Elena was not as enthusiastic as she could have hoped. What was wrong with the poor girl?
"Well, maybe it's a good thing you've met more people lately! Soquili are a social species and it's not good for us to be so isolated!"
