Auri yawned and quietly stretched from her reclining position on the floor of their den. It seemed so much bigger, now, that all her children had gone. The lioness paused for a moment to remember the sound of pitter-pattering on the very stones she lay on. A soft smile spread on her lips.
Soon, if the Gods were good, there would be more little feet roaming around.
Stifling another yawn (goodness, she was tired!) she rose and padded out and over to the nearest little water stream, suddenly thirsty.
She reached the stream in just a few minutes (she also loved the location of the water in question to her den; it was oh-so convenient). Auri drank her fill and lifted her head to scan the horizon, half-hoping to see one of her cubs out wandering somewhere. She hardly saw most of them anymore.

Sharifu had been out for a while, thinking similarly to his mate. His eyes had been open for signs of his family, enjoying keeping his eyes on them when he could. He was smart enough not to make his efforts too obvious to them, not wanting to pry. He hadn't really spotted anybody or he might have returned with them, they were independent but they were still affectionate.
Walking along towards home, he spotted Auri in the distance. She was out and about by the water, it was surprising motivation to pick up the pace. There wasn't necessarily anything special about being out by the water, but then.. who needed a special reason to be excited?
"Auri," he called out cheerfully.

She would definitely go find her cubs if she could. Though then that would perhaps intrude on their now-adult lives, and who wanted their mother to do that? Auri made a face at the thought of her own mother doing that. She definitely did not want that to happen, or at least hadn't wished for such a thing when she was a young adult.
The lioness flicked her head up when she heard her name and grinned up at her mate happily. The sudden thoughts of their children had made her feel terribly old, but the feelings that Sharifu created within her still made her feel childish and young again.
"Good morning," she greeted him with a gentle head bump-nuzzle.

Sharifu returned the nuzzle happily, coming up and sitting down right beside his mate. His eyes went to the water but quickly found their way back to Auri.
"It is a good morning," he agreed, even though it was really a greeting, "Have a busy day planned or are you still thinking?" His voice was curious but almost suggestive. Truthfully he didn't have much of a plan but he'd been thinking about how boring things were being.. just sitting around certainly wasn't much fun. The funny bunch they successfully raised from cub to adult were out of their fur, mostly, and that was definitely a contributing factor. It was almost like he'd forgotten how to entertain himself, but he wasn't going to admit defeat without a fight.

"Not a busy day, no. Did you have something in mind?" It had actually been quite a while since they had had each other alone and to themselves. It reminded her of before, when they were both younger and flirty and courting. She grinned and nipped at his ear.
"You remember how we played that game, before? With the little stream and the flowers and all?" Oh memories. They kept her entertained when all else wasn't so appealing.

He frowned at the memory of the little game they played by the stream, shaking his head very seriously. He definitely remembered it, but the game wasn't what he was focusing on. What was the fun in that?
"I remember how you found me before that game," he said with a sigh, a bit too dramatic and revealing quite clearly that he was only pretending to be ashamed, "I got tangled in a tree and you couldn't even let me win that game we played."
To be fair, he'd only brought her a flower. And he did try stealing it later, but that was just to get to see her again. Sharifu was beaming again when he thought about it.

Auri giggled and nuzzled him again, almost apologetically. Almost. "You won anyway, didn't you? You have me." Besides, she was a very good prize to have.
"And I enjoyed winning that game. It wasn't my fault you got tangled up in that silly tree." She glanced away with her nose up in the air, clearly pretending to snub him. "And you did try to steal my flower away! The very one you gave to me first, tsk. Now how was I supposed to repay you for that?"
Did she every repay him for that little stunt? Auri couldn't remember. If she hadn't, well, it was about time that she did...

"Instead of glory, I got you," he said thoughtfully, intentionally drawing out the pause and emphasizing his hesitation to accept that as a suitable exchange. He chuckled at the reminder of the stolen flower, grinning at Auri, "That was pretty sneaky- and clever, I thought. I wonder whatever became of that bird, I don't know if I can even remember his name." He paused to think about it, unaware that Auri was considering revenge-- and that he had forgotten to finish acknowledging and appreciating her as a prize.

She paused, glancing over at him with one of those "are you serious? I can't believe you just did that" looks on her faces. You know, the one girls have perfected. And obviously the ones that girls still needed to use on boys like this.
"You know, if you can't properly appreciate what a prize I am, I just might have to leave and then you'll miss me enough to want me back. See how you like that," she added, proceeding to scoot over and away from him--only a few feet. Just enough to make him think.

"What?" Sharifu noticed the look he got well before he realized what it was and what he had done to earn it. And as soon as he did, he smiled sheepishly at her and opened his mouth to finish his thought when she threatened him. Quickly, he closed his mouth and stared at her. He didn't look convinced, but he put on a sad face, got up and followed after her. He circled around her, brushing against as he went, leaning back out to face her in the direction she had been going.
"Don't be ridiculous," he said with a loving smile, then added "You can't get rid of me that easy." His smile turned into a grin. He was teasing her, he was having fun.

She tried her hardest not to smile, but each time he circled her and brushed up against an arm, or her shoulder, the edges of her mouth crinkled upward some more.
"Yeah, I know I couldn't get rid of you so easily," Auri sighed, finally giving in to her smile. "It goes to show that since you've stuck around this long, you're a good lion. And I would be silly to try and push you away." The usual sappy response, of course. It always made her smile even more, but just in response to it being so cheesy--and therefore silly.

For every twitch in Auri's smile, there was a twitch in Sharifu's as he tried not to laugh. He nudged her whens he dared to call him a good lion, resuming a seat directly by her side, only this time on the opposite side he had been before.
"Soooo.." he started, thinking back to the comment that had started this mock-argument, "You got the glory of victory and you get stuck with me? Maybe that does even things out a little bit. What do you think?"

She took a moment to think--mocking him, in turn, as she wondered and killed time by "Hmm" ing every once in a while, pretending to be deep in thought about his question.
"Hmm...I suppose so. It does even out, at least. You get me as a prize, and you get yourself stuck with me. Yeah, I guess it's a fair trade."
Unable to help herself anymore, she laughed and bumped her nose against his.

"Best of all, you're stuck with me," he responded brightly, no laugh being held back now, just a genuine smile and he bumped heads with her affectionately. He leaned there against her comfortably for a quiet moment, his tail swaying thoughtfully behind him before finally curling around his feet.
"So, is this how you intended to spend the day or is there something we ought to be doing?" he asked quietly. He was happy to just sit with her, but how long would it last today?

Of course she was stuck with him. It was, however odd, meant to be. But she pushed herself closer to him so that their paws touched, and one of hers went through to loop around one of his as their heads stayed nuzzled together.
"I didn't have a set plan, because I don't many responsibilities anymore. And I wasn't hungry, so I wasn't planning on hunting for anything...there's nothing I can think of that we ought to be doing. This is nice. Did you have a plan for today?"
