Makail and duty realy didn't go hand in had. Though really, what did they expect from him! He was barely an adult! You don't dump all this on someone so young and inexperience and expect him to be like his elderly father was! Sometimes Makail just,..really didn't like being king. Okay, 85% of time. Thankfully as of late, there had been nothing 'official' to be done, but that didn't mean he didn't get nagged.

Pathetic a thought as it was, he really wanted to play with the other kids.

Makail lay there, on one of the higher ledges of their rocky home, overlooking the basin adjacent to the court circle, where some of the younger pride members were playing. If dad were still alive, he'd be right in the middle of it all. Then again, if he hadn't been a spoiled only child, he wouldn't be king. Hmn,..usually 'then agains' were supposed to bring up something that made you feel better about your position in life,...this time, it didn't.

Makail rolled his eyes as his thoughts wondered on. He just,...felt so alone.

When Kafiri had left home, she was a quiet and uncertain half-leopardess. Forced to deal with her mother's death at the paws of a god and struggling to become more self-sufficient, she had gone off to find somewhere that could be her home, somewhere she could fit in and be happy. The Refilwe'Oluchi were what she had found and while she was comfortable and could feel the changes inside her, she was still wandering around with a certain shyness. It was a great adjustment, going from the least favorite in a surprisingly close family (they had at least all stuck together up to this point!) to a welcome presence in a pride. She was trusted and that meant so much.

She was out for a walk, keeping near the edges wherever she went in hopes of staying out of the way of anybody she came across. She didn't need to cause any trouble! When she came by the group of youths, she kept her distance and watched as she sadly thought about her cousins, left behind in the jungle she had come from. Her whole family really hadn't been that bad and she knew it was best for her that she had gone but that didn't mean she couldn't miss or think of any of them. So she watched quietly, smiling.

After his 'talk' the other day to the God of Royalty (it had finally struck him last night that yes indeed, he had been visited by a god) Makail had been considering, even moreso now, a re-selection of judges. After being insured protection by the god, Makail had more confidence.
The young king was thinking about these plans when he saw Kafiri - a fairly new presence in the pride.
From what he understood, she had been through a lot. Experience made a good judge. Maybe she would be a good replacement for one of the old nagging coots!

So, Makail lifted himself from his perch, and casually made his way down to her.

"Kafiri~"

Oh great, now how was he going to approach the subject, now that he was there,...ugh! Way to think ahead!

Kafiri's attention was pulled very suddenly away from the nearby fun when she heard her name. She was surprised when she realized who was speaking to her. She'd met him when she joined, of course, and he would be extremely difficult to forget. She straightened up as he came closer, offering a shy smile in response.

"Good afternoon," she greeted, her mind racing as she tried to imagine all possible reasons the king might approach you in a pride. Casual conversation wasn't one of the things that crossed her mind, she was still learning about being in a pride and everything seemed to have a lot of significance. She would calm down but for now.. she was a worrier.

Might aswell get straight to the point, he figured.

"I'm plannin' an overhaul of the current Elohim in judge position." Well, that was one way to start. Knowing that Kafiri had not known the pride's function for too long yet, he was about positive that he wouldn't be met with too much resistance. She seemed to be a shy one though, so Makail dropped the more formal air in favor of a more open, friendly, one.

"I was hoping to maybe, ah, 'interview' a select few for the job." He gave a small smile.

She was surprised when he immediately launched into business, though she wasn't sure it really was business. She blinked at him, nodding carefully. Was he testing the announcement to try to determine how it would be received? She knew what all the ranks were, an overhaul sounded somewhat dramatic but perhaps important, especially for a new king. Kafiri was careful to keep smiling as she thought through the things, though her small confusion was not well hidden. When Makail mentioned an interview, she almost spoke-- then she realized that maybe, just maybe, he was implying he wanted to interview her.

"You mean me?" she asked.

"Well, you certainly fit one of the criteria that I'm looking for - you never knew my father."

It was well known that the Elohim were in an uproar over Makail. The boy had 'simply never learned how to be king, let alone how to go about a king's duties!' They were holding him up to the rather over-sized reputation of their late great king.

"It's time for changes. The mission is the same - that will never change - but with the way the elders have been acting,...it will only drag the pride down." He sighted, then sat down. "What are your thoughst on this?
PostPosted: Sun Aug 23, 2009 11:14 am

Kafiri almost laughed when Makail described the first thing he was looking for, wondering if maybe that kind of characteristic should be kept private but she would certainly never ask or tell. She knew why, though, and she was smiling as he went on.

"I think," she said carefully, "It's important to have the Elohim on your side, without any doubt against you or the pride. We certainly shouldn't just let anything drag the pride down, our work is important." Partly, she said what she thought he might want to hear but she also believed what she said. She was new to pride politics but she understood that you had to protect certain things. This was what a king was supposed to do, wasn't it?

Makail nodded. "I worry that they resent me,...or will come to, at the very least. And what if they then take that resentment and undermine my authority? They already distrust my judgement,..I think in their old age they've gotten more harsh then they need be."

It was common knowledge that makail had a much softer way of doing things. He lacked the backbone for harsh punishment, and had full faith in his 'rehabilitation' tactic.

"In last weeks trial,...for a petty theft they wanted to cripple a young cheetah." There was a hurt and almost distresed look on the young lions face. "I had to fight tooth and nail for them to allow me to try my way."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 23, 2009 1:34 pm

She listened, nodding along as he spoke. He had good reason to want a change, he had evidence of the need for it. Makail certainly would have had Kafiri's support even if he were not conducting an interview with her about it. She frowned at the story he told of the cheetah, nodding again.

"Justice should be possible without causing excessive damage," she murmured, noting the look on his face and agreeing with what she guessed was his own dislike of severe, irreversible damage. Any feline would do poorly if they were crippled, if it were not able to find someone or someones to help with its survival.. it could have been, would have been as good as condemning it to die. Over theft.

"I have my doubts, though," Kafiri said quietly, speaking quite personally and trying to add something to the conversation other than muttered agreement, "I was not treated fairly in my life before I came here, I hate to see others treated unfairly. But also, my mother was at fault for much of what she did. She- she got what she had coming. I joined you here because I believe in what you do, I believe in justice and in fairness. I like having a purpose but even I am not entirely sure what I think."

"Your experiences could prove useful." Makail really had never had any experiences outside the pride. He'd encountered many stories, but hearing them and experiencing them were two entirely different things.
"That is, if you'd like to be a part of the new team of judges I'm looking for? You said you like having a purpose, after all?" Makail gave a smile.

"I hope to make a more balanced panel of judges than the one my father had - one of each species - Lion, cheetah, and Leopard. That leaves one place - A mix. It will n** predjudice before it can even happen - which," he then gave a wry chickle, "Is another problem I've seen.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 23, 2009 8:49 pm

Kafiri looked doubtful but she gave a shy smile when he said it might be useful. Her thoughts and opinions might be muddled but perhaps it could be put to use, she would like very much to sort out exactly what she made of everything. It wasn't until he commented on a balanced panel of judge and prejudice about mixes that she perked up a bit. Prejudice was a huge part of her life and the complications she had experienced in it, if there was some way to help combat that, she would certainly want in.

"I do like that idea," she admitted when he finished, smiling.

"Alright then," He smiled. "If you would accept the duty, you're deffinately in! And trust me - when the plans start going in to action, everyone will know."

Time to kick some old coots off their pedistal. It would fix so many problems! Of Looking deeper in to it the other night, Makail thought his father was a bit foolish putting pride members who had been bron and raised within the pride's boundries up in such a high position - experience was a wonderful teacher!
Of course, Makail didn't know too much about the outside himself. As an adolecent, he had only gone on one mission with the Malakim, and that was certainly enough for him! Still he would have like to have more outside experiences... Too late for that now though.

He had a duty to attend to.

"I would like the opportunity," she said more agreeably than before. It didn't take too much to convince Kafiri when she was already half-convinced from the desire to do more than just hide from now on. At least, she was forcing herself to agree now. She could use her own time to adjust and reconsider doubts, she wouldn't use Makail's. She nodded when he said everyone would know when things started going down, which gave her a little less to worry about.

"I understand," she nodded, "I hope you can get everything worked out without unnecessary stress." It sounded stressful, finding and talking to certain people and not meeting much resistance once it became undeniable. And aside from that, she felt she should say something.

Makail nodded. "Well, theres a lot to think about,..alot for us both to think about. If you feel you so not wish to be a judge, feeel free to tell me. With that,...I'm off to think some more. Have a nice evening, Kafiri." The young king smiled.
