As part of our effort to inject some new inspiration and life into the resonance guild, we're starting a series of community threads to participate in dubbed "impulses".

A lot of forums have daily/weekly themed sketch threads, but we'd like to go beyond that standard with some more creative, open-ended topics and themes. These can be completed in a multitude of ways compatible with each artists' personal style and approach, and the goals will be focused on developing one's techniques instead of simply pumping out a themed drawing or rendering.

For this first one, we're kicking it off with a simple Q&A to warm up and get a feel for what kind of exercises would be fun to start with here.

So:

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques?

And your weakest?

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?

Okay, you've read this far, now let's see some answers! =)

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques?

I think my line work would be the strongest. I stick to drawing the female figure since the shapes are easy for me to figure out and draw. I also really really like drawing hair biggrin

I love working with other people and finding ways to complement my skills with someone else to come up with a collaborative harmony biggrin

I'm also really good with coming up with a general idea or composition and/or theme. A lot of the work I do with Kirby relies heavily on my ability to come up with an idea and a plan to execute said idea.

And your weakest?

Coloring anything; I struggle a lot when I color my work but I make myself practice because it's something I feel I should at least learn.

Details! I get super bored when I have to draw details in anything and I tend to lose focus. Luckily I like working with Kirby and he loves paying attention to detail razz

Drawing guys...but I don't have any real interest in learning so I'm not sure if it counts as a weakness??

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?

I think learning more technical stuff in detail. When it comes to using other programs like Maya or Flash or After Effects I'm pretty much in the dark on how to actually execute the ideas I come up with.

Alright, my turn! Good answers so far, keep 'em coming people =)

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques?

Technical execution/problem solving/optimization, color and lighting, 3D modeling/texturing/rendering, effects.

And your weakest?

Figure/character drawing, concept art, composition/layout, anatomy, cute stuff, character animation (particularly human), fashion/clothing design, avoiding tunnel vision. Most of these things I rely on spork for XD and it's made me laaaaazy!

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?

Something hard to describe.....the creative process, I suppose - being expressive and able to come up with a general idea to execute. I wouldn't mind improving my ability to draw characters too, but it seems like soooo much work..!

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques?
Rendering depth and light, faces.

And your weakest?
Basically anything but scantily clad women.

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?
BACKGROUNDS. I must learn how to do these. I've made a few attempts but I always end up going BAWWWWW and doing some cop-out graphic design-y thing.

hohoho my turn!

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques? willingness to try different things, lining, able to adapt and change styles, and strong ambition to always improve current styles, and color choices, also a nice sense of style with custom designs and clothing

And your weakest?
textures, backgrounds, anatomy, colors (at times very saturated and high in contrast... need to work a lot more on my rendering at the end), really get into other peoples characters through their descriptions.

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?painting was my life in hs and i haven't done it in a decade.... i really want to pick that up and work with my current styles, i also like to do more dynamic poses to help my pictures come out more, and last need to work out a better composition to see what i can really do.... mostly i blame my laziness.....

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques?
            • I'd have to say design, composition, color, typography, pencil sketches.

        And your weakest?
            • CG rendering. I need some painterly Photoshop brushes or preferably a painter program like ArtRage. Oh and backgrounds/landscapes.

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?
            • CG rendering. I'd like to get into digital painting.

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques?
Linework and color theory tend to be my strongest areas. I've gotten much better at anatomy in recent years.

And your weakest?
I have difficulty with composition and balance. I might have a few areas that look really well done, but others just kind of fall by the wayside. I tend to not finish my work or not do much with backgrounds after I finish the main subject. Sometimes it works, but most times it just doesn't.

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?
I want to work more with digital painting. I see some amazing work that I'd love to emulate and experiment with. But my digital painting style seems a little sloppy. Also, I'd really love to have a place where I can work exclusively with more traditional mediums, especially paint (acrylic, oil and watercolor). These days I tend to just go with markers since they're not messy. Oh! I'd love to work with sculpture as well. I've always dreamed of sculpting my own figures and what not. smile

My Strengths:
Color, design, digital touching and retouching and general touching.

My Weaknesses:
Getting ideas conveyed. Drawing/lines.
Everything I draw ends up being so stale and boring, I have to rely on what I can do with color and effects to add life to it.
My worst enemy is a blank canvas.
I'd rather just have a coloring book of infinite line art to play with.

Wanted Skills/Tech:
Dynamic lighting.
Getting out of my comfort zone and not getting frustrated with the results.
BACKGROUNDS.
The most interesting part of a picture it the environment, and I never can paint any!

Strengths
Im quick when learning new art techniques, if Im inspired by a art style ill try to create my own art in that style. Im also decent at graphics I suppose.

My Weaknesses
Coming up with Backgrounds for my art is a bigy Dx.
Also when I start a art project and run into problems, I almost always want to quit the project.

Unfortunately because I experiment with so many different art themes/etc I dont ever master/perfect any specific art style.

Wants @ 3@
I want to be able to come up with good designs/backrounds for my art pieces. I also want to be able to stick with one art style, and be satisfied with it.

I also want to learn more techniques I guess.

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques?
Anatomy. D: I think I have a pretty good grasp on it to make it believable if not always correct. Composition and colors are another. 8D

And your weakest?
Details, dynamic compositions, and action poses are at the top of my worst list. :< I lack patience to hunker down for details and though I know this I never change. I struggle with moving away from classic-like poses that don't have enough tension in them. Action poses ties in a bit with dynamic compositions simply because I lack clear perspective information in my brain for stuff I can't see. ; n; No model to pose for me (willingly) either.

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?
I'd like to improve my digital painting technique. :3 I'm a classic artist first and a digital artist second so I have a hard time getting my digital works to carry out the same movement and brushwork that my traditional stuff has. |D

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques?
I don't really have one, sadly.

And your weakest?
Everything, lol.

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?
Again, everything.

Hoo.... I should get to work on some new stuff...

What would you consider to be your strongest skills or techniques?
I'm not sure I would consider myself strong in anything, but I do like roughing out sketches. I can't say that I've really been that keen on finishing them up though...

And your weakest?
I have a hard time polishing up stuff. Usually once I finish something and put it away for even a bit, I won't be willing to touch it again. I also need to work on livening up my compositions... they're either stiff or constricted.

Lastly, which techniques (known or otherwise) would you like to improve most?
PAINTING. I really want to be able to get colors down without having to rely on lines. I'm a little motivated to get working on some more complex figure perspective since I think it could really help with my compositions. oh... and backgrounds.
