I've seen a couple of posts asking about how to start up a GSA. This is just a very basic guideline for people who don't know, please add on to it if you feel the need to.
Step one: Get a couple of friend together to start it. One person would have problems setting up meetings, getting people to attend, and dealing with any problems which may arise -although I'm sure it has been done- but 2 or 3 should have more luck getting people together and organized.
Step two: Talk to a teacher. Many schools may require a staff sponser for student groups. make sure you have someone to back your groups, so that you can get meeting space, talk to classes, and anything else that students may have trouble doing without someone who holds more sway being involved.
Step three: Get organized! figure out when meetings will be, and what you want to bring up at the first few meetings. Determine how you want to go about anything that your GSA wants to do, such as get better educational tools instead of the soley hetero approach of most school sex ed programs, get better books in the library (for example, my school doesn't have a copy of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof)
Step four: Talk to your school administration. This is probably required to start an official group, and they like to be included. Don't leave them out, or you will face the consequences! School administrators (principles and vice principles) hold all of the power, so make sure that they are kept in the loop. They can decide whether or not you can get classroom space, whether or not you can put up posters or fliers, and generally can drive any student group into the ground if it heads in the wrong direction. Do not piss them off.
Step five: Get people to come to the meetings! Tell all of your freinds, classmates, and random people in the hallways. Put up posters/fliers. Ask a teacher if you can announce it at the end of class. Whatever, just make it known that there is a GSA and that anyone is welcome to come to meetings.
please remember, this was written in about 15 minutes, and I more than likely have missed something here.

Thanks for that. Sadly, my school is an a**. A girl wore a rainbow necklace with the word "pride" on it, and the administration made her take it off because it was "inappropriate." But of course, they do let people wear buttons that have a picture of a marajuana leaf and say "Make it legal." Same girl tried to start up a GSA last year and they didn't let her, and will never let anyone, because it's a catholic school, and thus, homosexuality is "innapropriate." -____-

I'm not sure how my school is, but I did notice that it says nothing about homosexuality in the Nondiscrimination Policy. I always notice small things. I'm tempted to bring it up. Anyone else think I should? I know, I'm good at going off topic slightly.

I'd say that it's worth mentioning.

My school had a GSA but it went bye bye... Last year I wanted to get it started but things got out of hand... the only openly gay teacher raped my best friend Greg... I tried to make one now that both the teacher (and sadly Greg) are gone but the office keeps saying that we don't need one because we have Diversity Works (which meshed with anime club so all they do is anime related/DDR/JRock stuff or they just sit and gossip... now, I love the first 3 and hate gossip but what I'm saying is they're in no way productive)

How's your friend doing now? The anime club should be seperate from that diversity works thing, which sounds like it could be ok on it's own. if you can't start a GSA, try to separate the diversity works from the anime club somehow.

Well, Greg was kicked out of his parent's house and this teacher was the only guy he trusted. I'm so glad that teacher's gone because I may have killed him. He was such a nice-seeming guy... But because of all this his parents were forced to take him back and so now he has to deal with abuse and crap daily... I hate his parents... he was living with his bf until he got dumped... I don't know why... Greg's the one who's a model and everyone wants a piece of Greg... They're also sending him to a church every day where they're trying to de-gay him... It sucks. I asked to speak with the person in charge of the group but her schedule's pretty weird. I think I may write her a note.

I'm the VP of my school's GSA and our first real meeting is in 2 weeks. Anyone who's in a GSA, could you tell me more about what goes on at your meetings (topics discussed, how the meetings are run, trips you go on, how to recruit....)
Please message me with your response.

May I ask everyone (Erm, anyone who reads this...) a question?
Is it a worthless endeavor to try to start a GSA in a religious school?
'Cause next year, I'm going to this private Jewish school, and I know they don't have a GSA, so I was thinking of starting one, but, does that seem like a good idea? Like, a possibility?

I'd say it's not impossible, but depending on the attitude of the faculty and students, it may be highly unlikely.
