I'm pretty new to WoW, and I'm getting close to the level where I should start thinking about getting better gear so people would do raids/instances with me. I read a lot about the tier sets, but I have no idea how most of them are obtained.
It looks like the early ones are mostly drops, but when it gets to the higher tiers, you have to exchange tokens for them. And from what I've seen, there are a ton of different tokens, and I read a lot about exchanging them for other tokens, and have no idea what that's all about.
So I guess what I think I know is:
- Early tiers are drops in certain raids (or instances?)
- Later ones are obtained by exchanging tokens
If that's correct, and correct me if that was wrong, how often are the tokens drop? Are they guaranteed from the bosses? And does everybody in the group get them, or are they rolled for?

Naxxramas - Tier 7 for 10man and 7.5 for 25 man
Vault of Archavon also drops the respective tier 7s for 10/25 man
Ulduar - Tier 8 for 10 man and 8.5 for 25 man
There is a tier nine, and that would be from Triumph Emblems...
However, after the latest patch, you could just farm heroic 5-man dungeons to get up enough Conquest Emblems (which drop from 5man bosses now up from Heroic Emblems) and get almost half a set of T8.5...
When a token is dropped, everyone in the party/raid gets it/them (2 or more drop from raid bosses) and you can also get 2 Triumph tokens by completing the daily Heroic Dungeon quest. ...And may Sithis have mercy on your soul.

Heroic, conquest, triumph emblems? gonk
So would triumph be for T9? And conquest for T8? And heroic for T7? Or is conquest for T8.5 and heroic for T8?
And should I even bother with the lower tiers?

T1: Drops from Molten Core
T2: Drops from Molten Core/ Onyxia's Lair heart / Blackwing Lair
T3 Tokens: Old Nax
T4 Tokens: Kara/Gruul
T5 Tokens: Serpentshrine / The Eye
T6 Tokens: Hyjal / BT / Sunwell heart
T7 Tokens: Naxx (heroic = 10man / valorous = 25 man)
T8 Tokens: Ulduar (Also two different versions available 10/25 man)

All things considered, I wouldn't recommend trying to obtain tier gear, aside from T7 and above unless you are trying to do it the raids for achievement points. T1-T6 becomes quite obsolete since leveling is quite fast. At level 74ish a few of my T6 slot items became obsolete.

Your party/raid can get a few tokens at a time. They aren't guaranteed, and sometimes your class token would take forever to drop.
The way they are distributed is determined by the guild. Some guilds do point systems (each member is awarded points based on participation/time etc in guild raids); some do need or greed; most roll; and most of the more structured guilds do point system based on output. For instance, your DPS/healing output in the raid will determine the odds of getting an item. Lower guilds who are now gearing through heroics etc might do a system based on who would benefit most from the slot item, this is to get ready for high leveled instances the quickest. It is quite unfair since you'll pretty much be carrying lower geared people, but it makes the guild ready for naxx etc much faster.

Heroic is just below and Heirlooms which are powerful armor and weapons that can be sent to another character on the same realm and account to help with leveling up
Valiant is 7 & 7.5
but those two emblems dont' drop anymore, since the last patch. Everything drops Conquest and up. Conquest is 8/8.5 and Triumph is t9.
But, conquest can be downgraded to below it for the lesser items.
I would only do this if you run heroic dungeons enough to get a huge number of Conquest emblems. seeing as you can only purchase 2 out of a tier armor set... which are usually in sets of 5. So say you have 200 Conquest emblems and each cost 50 for a set piece
you'd be able to buy 2 pieces of the 8.5 set then downgrade to valiant and buy two pieces of the 7.5 set. say greeves and helm 8.5 then chest and boots of 7.5
I know, this is all very confusing, trust me, it took me some time to get used to it. And I'm still... "relatively" new. ...And may Sithis have mercy on your soul.

I think I get most of it right now.
So I can only buy 2 pieces of the sets from the vendors? How am I supposed to get the rest?
