Thud! is fun, but it reads like a hybrid of Feet of Clay and Fifth Elephant, which is fair enough. Night Watch read like Guards! Guards mixed heavily with Men At Arms, and Night Watch rocked.

It fills me with giddy glee that once again Thief of Time (my favourite Pratchett, and before September, book of all time) has been put into continuity again with the repeating of Koom Valley as the main plot-point.

Currently I have finished reading Stephen King's "Misery", that woman was even more crazy then in the movie. pirate

I finished reading "The Once & Future King" by TH White a few weeks ago. This volume includes "The Sword in the Stone" and the rest of his Arthurian stories. I definitely prefer "The Sword in the Stone" of all of them; it's quite whimsical, has random anachronisms from Merlyn and deals with Wart's childhood. It's great to read the source material for the Disney film.

Other than that, I've been reading Biggles books (air pilot from around 1916 to 1960s, which means that in theory he ought to have been about 90!).

Also been reading books by Arturo Perez Reverte about Captain Alatriste. These are basically a swashbuckling series, set in Madrid around about the time of the Three Musketeers in France (though possibly slightly earlier). Spain has just made a movie of the first book, but no news on the UK release date yet. Darn shame really, since Viggo Mortensen stars (Spanish is one of the many languages he speaks fluently).

I've ordered from dear Play.com the latest seventh Doctor book, 'cos it has Ace in it.

In the meantime, although I know this isn't a book, but it's reading, honest, I'm also going through my archive of MSTed fanfiction - i.e. fanfiction that has been given the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment (see http://www.mst3k.com/mstfaq/basics.html for info). At the moment, I'm in the middle of a 250 page (A4 Word) epic of Sonic the Hedgehog, wherein Sonic appears only once and has precisely one line of dialogue. Gotta love those self-inserts... I've just finished all my Marrissa Picard collection. What would I do without Stephen Ratliff? smile See http://home.netcom.com/~mblackwl/mst.html for more info.

I also want to read "Thud!", but first my local library needs to get a copy, 'cos I'm too cheap to pay for the hardback.

*resurfaces briefly*

You've never heard of Drizzt?!?!

Maybe it's just a roleplayer thing - but with CJ around, I'm sure you'll be enlightened fairly quickly... wink

Also, I can't remember whether or not I sent you an e-mail thanking you for that copy of The Dumas Club. I'll give you an opinion when I get a chance to actually sit down and read. sad

I only read the Icewind Dale trilogy and the most recent ones, as opposed to the ones that actually made the guy famous...
Hmmm.
Anyway, I'm reading Vellum, by Hal Duncan. Quite an interesting little fantasy so far...
And for everyone bar Nuala: Read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. Now.

(Attempts to give the forum a shot in the arm)
Encouraged by the "recommended by Gaiman" label attached to it, I've just acquired a copy of Lud-in-the-Mist.
Should prove interesting... and I have a soft spot for Old English Faerie.

I'm rereading my Lord Peter Wimsey collection. Currently in the middle of "Gaudy Night", which is possibly my favourite (despite all the romance).

I wish I could find my eloquent post elsewhere on the subject of his lordship, but for those who don't know the series, it's crime novels by Dorothy L Sayers. They're set between the wars in England and generally paint a very convincing picture of society at that time, as well as providing some extremely good detective novels.

I prefer the character of Wimsey to Sherlock Holmes. Whereas Holmes appears oftentimes superhuman (and you really feel for Watson), Wimsey is altogether human. He suffers from shell-shock; has residual guilt over being born rich and aristocratic and feeling that he is not doing something useful with those assets; he agonises over his "hobby" of detecting when it comes actually to catching (and therefore hanging) the criminal - does he have a right to get someone else hanged just as a hobby? On the other hand, what about the poor victims? Why shouldn't he help the police if he has that inclination?

So yeah, that's what I'm reading; until I finish this training course, go back home and pick up the Target novelisation of the Doctor Who episode "Silver Nemesis" from the Royal Mail depot. Yay, Cybermen!!!

I'm inclined to agree. Gaudy Night is probably the best of 'em, though Busman's Honeymoon and Have His Carcass are also excellent.
They got better as they went on, really.

Chao- Chao really likes to read! Chao is thinking about re-reading Fahrenhet 451 again. It's such a good book and it does make you ponder abot the way humans live. 3nodding
