I would have thought more people would have commented on this abomination of a story but I guess since it's not as popular as Twilight it doesn't get as much attention.
I read (actually more like skimmed) through the Host awhile back and I can honestly say as a lover of Sci-Fi it pissed me off as much as Twilight. And like every other piece of tripe Meyer produces it proves her lack of wit and imagination.
The main thing that irked me is the way Meyer made some VERY serious things seemed almost unimportant because they were not connected to the main character. Like kidnapping humans and forcing aliens inside of them is a casual occurrence. For any of you who don't know, they erase the humans memory like they were a computer so they can take over. But of course that doesn't matter because the main character IS an Alien who is oh-so good because she doesn't really /want/ to take over someones body. How wonderfully goody-good of her!
What's with Meyer and this 'oh well' behavior towards serious topics anyways?!!!

Because everything is about the main character and love. Serious issues are never tackled by Meyer so there's no point in being surprised. *****, stalking, abusive relationships and dangerous mental behavior weren't tackled in Twilight. Why would murder and in a way, enslavement be acknowledged in another one?
I never made it passed the second chapter of that crap, I thought it was worse than Twilight. I couldn't help but think that 'Melanie Stryder' sounded too much like 'Stephenie Meyer'. I read the online summary instead.
... Did you edit your post? I thought the connection you made about the Goa'uld was pretty good.

Yes yes, I have heard of this other book of hers...but I don't have a very strong stomach, so I never brang myself to read it. I'm reading The Host's Wikipedia page...how did a trip to Utah spawn this?! ...*Head explodes* I want to read this book now just for the lulz...

I wanted to bang my head against a wall when I read this book. The beginning of it is so droll I wanted to stab myself in the eyes. It got a little better and there's a little more evidence of a plot. But the main character is even more of a Mary-Sue than Bella. I wanted to kill her more and more with every passing page. She's so self sacrificial that for the first time in my life I felt like a terrible monster.
As for what you said, "Like kidnapping humans and forcing aliens inside of them is a casual occurrence. For any of you who don't know, they erase the humans memory like they were a computer so they can take over. But of course that doesn't matter because the main character IS an Alien who is oh-so good because she doesn't really /want/ to take over someones body."
First, the book is called The Host, and Earth is not the first planet that these aliens have come to and taken over. It is strange however, that these aliens take over in a very "peaceful" yet really creepy, brainwashing way. You know like the too "good", bordering psychopathic? But you are right, she is dodging an issue, I mean it's okay that aliens have taken us over, because they cleaned out human messes up and made the Earth a better place to live! rolleyes
I don't think the main character would have cared much about taking over the human body, if the mind of the human didn't stay with her. She would have been just as oblivious as everyone else. She just got sick of sharing the body with a human.
What bothered me, and this is probably the "out of character" error, but the fact that at first all the humans in the books hated the aliens until of course Wanda (main alien) taught them that she was actually good. And so they go out and get her another body so that the human who she occupies can be free of her control. (But hey, they kidnapped an alien not a human, so it's okay! /sarcasm/)

...that's what it's about? I would have totally made that idea into a horror story. But it sounds like the Yeerks from Animorphs or the Goa'uld of Stargate...

I thought the connection you made about the Goa'uld was pretty good. Yes, I felt that most people didn't wanna hear me gripe about how Meyer ripped her story off of Stargate (even though the Goa'uld' are the most bad assed villains I've ever seen.) Quote: What bothered me, and this is probably the "out of character" error, but the fact that at first all the humans in the books hated the aliens until of course Wanda (main alien) taught them that she was actually good. They way Meyer writes she makes it seem like ANYONE who isn't the main character is nothing more than a walking cardboard cutout that feels no pain. I'm waiting for her to write a book where the main character goes out and murders a busload of children and makes it sound as casual as stopping in to get a coffee at Starbucks. -_-

The Unholy Shadow ...that's what it's about? I would have totally made that idea into a horror story. But it sounds like the Yeerks from Animorphs or the Goa'uld of Stargate... It IS a horror story. It's called Bodysnatchers. Only they aliens in that story aren't all impossibly perfect.

I never read it and I don't want to, it's a total Animorphs knock off, I'd sooner read that! Come up with something original if at all possible stressed

Or they were orphans so it's not like they had families anyway. If anything, the person actually saved them the suffering of an adult life. /// heavy sarcasm.
