A pond. Water just clear enough, a couple lily pods blooming in the middle of the surface, no animal in sight… it was the perfect spot. Sings-backwards approached it, thirsty. She could use a really fresh drink right now. She didn’t check if it belonged to anyone… nobody would know it, anyway. Deeper, an unstable layer of mud blocked the light, but the water at the surface was as transparent as you could hope in a swamp. Seeing as how several trees surrounded the pond, their low pale green foliage getting in the way, it didn’t seem strange not to see anyone taking the most of it.
Sings-backwards lowered her head. One mouthful of water after another, she enjoyed their freshness quietly. Outside of drinking and bathing, though, it didn’t seem to be much of use… no trace of fish or frogs; hunting them was not an option. Not many plants, either. Still a nice spot mostly left in the shadow, with only a few clear patch of pale light escaping the blocking screen of leaves.
Suddenly, her eyes took notice of a long greenish thing in the water. As it surfaced, water made it shine slightly. She could see the scales under the rare dancing spot of light on the liquid. It startled her greatly. The gasping doe stepped back very fast until her tail encountered a bush, around which she walked without looking back, leaving the secret spot. “A crocodile!” she screamed while running.

As usual, there was one shadow that drifted along, just the slightest tinge darker than the rest. Midnight's Shadow was on the move again. He crept along in that darkness that was possibly his best friend. It would do him no harm, for he could see better in the dark than anyone, and he knew every shadow, every inkling as well as he knew his own hide.

That day's venture took him out to the crocodile pond, or at least one of them. He was slinking along in the underbrush, crouched rather low to the ground, sniffing around. He had heard a rustling beforehand and suspected it to be something of small stature, like a snake or ground-bird. This pond was a good hunting ground, he knew, so long as he didn't stray too close to the water. The crocodile that lived there had quite a temper, and he was crafty too. Midnight's Shadow had on many an occasion seen a poor creature stray too close and get snapped up before it even noticed the reptile.

As he moved through these dark parts closer to the trees, he was concentrating very hard on the things before him, and so when he heard a rather alarmed declaration of the presence of the reptile, he didn't react fast enough. He managed to stand up straight and turn his head toward the cry before the collision. What looked to be a very frightened doe had bumped into him, and what she would see if she turned around, might not be any less frightening than the crocodile in the water.

The shape sank into the cloudy part of the water almost as fast as it appeared. Sings-backwards couldn’t see that, of course, running for her life. What possessed her to ignore the warnings, obvious in hindsight, and brave the huge reptile? The lack of animals and kimeti, the ominous darkness, all of these had been pretty big hints. Still getting away from the menace, she shook her head, lamenting her foolish behaviour that could have cost her her life if it weren’t for her attention. “I’m so stupid… the-“
So self-absorbed by her scare, she didn’t pay attention to where she was going and bumped into something - or rather, someone - that wasn’t very noticeable in that dark place. Immediately, the doe stepped sideways, confused by the unexpected impact. “Oh my, I’m so sorry” she apologized vigorously and sincerely, “there’s a crocodile, a crocodile…”

Turning her head, Sings-backwards was about to warn her interlocutor to get away in case the predator was chasing her, but something else completely different struck her. He really looked like a buck, but he was even darker than the shadows, and where his eyes should be, could be seen a strange shape glowing like the red moon.
Completely forgetting the crocodile, she started slowly stepping back, staring at Midnight’s Shadow with terrified eyes and her mouth agape. Old childish fears of large black monsters raced back into her panicked mind.

He stood still, watching the doe apologize profusely and stumble over her words. Indeed the crocodile was something to fear, and so he just waited for her to get that emotion out using words. But when she turned, presumably to look at who she had bumped into, it all got a lot more interesting. He could watch the slight amount of what he might have called relief that she wasn't alone, melt away. It dripped off of her face to be replaced with a new fear. Eyes wide, mouth gaping, the usual.

He was used to this, in fact, it generally just amused the buck. The effect he had on others was usually just like this, fear and panic. Seldom would he find someone willing, or maybe even able, to look past that. He didn't mind, though. This way he could control who he talked to and when.

With a regal nod, he spoke, "Hello, Miss." His lips spread upwards into a smile, exposing his teeth; teeth that were white in contrast to his pitch-black coat. They didn't glow, too, did they? It was just the contrast. "Yes, there is a crocodile in those waters, and a rather nasty one at that. Lucky you didn't stray much closer, he would have snatched you up in a moment." Sure, he wasn't moving any closer to the doe, but his smile could almost be seen as floating amid the darkness, taunting? Laughing? Grinning, anyway.

Sings-backwards' eyes couldn’t leave Midnight’s Shadow’s, as much as she wanted to. There was something mesmerizing about these eyes, as if someone had drew lines on his face with a red firefly. The same kind of fascination a rattling snake exerts on its helpless prey.
Being a coward herself, many things would make her jump, or even shriek briefly until she realized she was in safety. This crocodile was the first, but she didn’t doubt that anything larger than a fox with fangs would make her run about that fast.
The worst kind of fright, however, was the one that caused her to be at complete loss of words, paralyzed. This was that kind of scare.

Thank Matope, it - wait, it’s a he - he can talk casually. Was he oblivious to his appearance? Of course not, he had to be aware. None of the other kimeti Sings-backwards had seen had any more special than a couple glowing markings; it was no wonder she was impressed by his look.
Oh no, he smiled with these… immaculate teeth, in an ambiguous way. She ceased her backing down, however. Get a grip, he’s a kimeti. Probably. Only a creepy buck that looks an awful lot like these imaginary beasts she dreamed of.
“H-hello…” No matter what it was, it would not have been polite to greet it first. “So, you know there’s a crocodile here” she said, then chuckled nervously. “Of course you know, I screamed so loud… I ran as soon as I saw something move. I guess I’m very lucky, indeed.”
That surreal smile among the shadows, the indistinct shape, the red lines…
“… am I?”

"Yes. Very lucky to have escaped the snapping teeth of the crocodile. I've watched him snatch up a buck, bigger than myself." As he spoke, he leaned forwards a little and after that first sentence, he clacked his teeth together, imitating a jaw snapping shut. He took a pace or two closer to the doe, head still a little further forward than his chest. "Oh, that was quite a struggle. Water splashing everywhere, loud yells, curses thrown wildly. It was quite the scene. For a moment it looked like he might get away." A pause, where he took another step forwards, pulling his front half out of the shadows behind him. His tousled, wild fur could be distinguished now, along with the extra ridges on his back. He had stopped grinning, but now looked slightly amused at the story he told."But of course, after a missed chance of escape... CRACK!" Midnight's Shadow stomped his foot down on a twig at that exact moment. Ahhh... what a performer. "And he was dead. Pulled down into the depths of the reptile's lair. Never to be seen again."

This is what the dark buck enjoyed most. Telling stories. He'd often go out to find new ones, eavesdrop on others to know of their adventures, stalk someone and jump into their conversation at just the right moment, things like that. He always wanted to know more. This darkling was always striving for more information, more stories, more knowledge. When it came down to it, he would ask lots of questions, but many of his encounters would end rather abruptly and before he got a chance to ask anything. But for now, this story and this new doe kept his attention.

“A buck bigger than you”, parroted the doe. It must be a really vicious crocodile she ran away from… and these teeth didn’t help at all. She whimpered almost imperceptibly when he clacked these white teeth, and her head backed down a little.
The rest of the story only made her feel much more uneasy. Twice as much fear at once: that strange kimeti that only belonged to a nightmare, telling her with a disgusting delight the dangers of the predator that could very well have made her his lunch. The female had to hide that nauseous feeling she was getting from all this, she looked away, it was hard to listen thoroughly to that story that could only end in a horrible way…
Crack!

Sings-backwards expected that kind of sound effect, but not so soon, not while she was thinking about something else. She let out a shriek. Oops. She ought not to show fear; who knew how this buck’s personality was truly like? Maybe he was the kind to feed his pet crocodile weekly… what a stupid idea; big reptiles don’t know anything about loyalty.
“S-sorry.”
So much effort not to shake too visibly… it went to waste as her legs shivered. Oh, shoot. She however tried to be a big girl and keep talking. No running away, unless he made another suspicious move towards her. “It was such a nice pond, but the rest of the swamp can be cruel as well. It was… stupid to believe it was an innocent place.” She attempted to appear as friendly as possible and feigned interest in order to do so. “Did that crocodile catch many more kimeti?...”

The buck could have laughed at the fright he instilled in this poor doe. Possessing a rather disturbing laugh, he thought better of it and kept it inside of his mind, instead of scaring the doe off completely. He didn't want her escaping quite yet, he was having too much fun. She shrieked, and shook, it was all very entertaining. But she was still here. He didn't think she looked brave, but she definitely looked stuck on the spot, and so he decided to end his story on a more open-minded thought. She deserved an answer, after all, and perhaps he'd receive a couple of his own.

He nodded, once more, "He's had a few goat-treats, yes. He relies on the act of surprise." As he speaks, he wanders over to the water, pauses in his speech and takes a quick two gulps of water. He keeps an eye on the water as he drinks, and then picks his head back up and retreats to a safe distance from the edge. All of this calm, he had done this many times before. The crocodile didn't even show this time, he probably knew Midnight was a waste of time, observant as he was.

Midnight's Shadow stops right outside of the shade that he had been standing in before he took a drink, and looks over the doe, no longer grinning, rather, his glowing eyes pouring over her. He was also in full view now, shag even more apparent than before. His tail swished back and forth as he spoke, his voice rough, "Me, he doesn't bother with. I've watched him long and learned his tricks. That crocodile would never manage to wrap his maw around Midnight's Shadow." In this backwards way, he chose to introduce himself, but felt the doe deserved his nickname, not only because he had frightened her, but also because it often instilled even more fear, "But you, my dear, may call me Nightmare." Another slight nod to go with his introduction, before he added, "And what would a tasty morsel like yourself be doing out here, in crocodile territory?" He took a step closer, "And would that delicious doe have a name?"

To her surprise, Midnight’s Shadow walked to the very place she left. “B-but…” she stuttered as he blatantly violated his own warning. She stepped forward as if she wanted to stop him, but didn’t go so far as to get much closer to the danger. “D-don’t!”
However, no crocodile this time. Despite how creepy this person was, the last thing she would have wanted was to have him be devoured by the crocodile in a display of recklessness.

The fact he knew the crocodile rather well didn’t comfort Sings-backwards in any way, to the contrary, it only blurred the difference between their supposed motives. And with that, he looked bigger than she thought (or was his fur that shaggy?).
Her knees shook when he told her his nickname. Nightmare. She almost replied it fitted him, but she made a point not to put her foot in her mouth in front of him. “I’m Sings-backwards. I was just… thirsty. Wandering around. I was looking for fresh water.”
The doe briefly considered running away now, but the pond with the deadly crocodile was mostly in her way, and so was Nightmare. Anyway, it struck her that he knew the place much better than her; if she was in danger with him, she wouldn’t be able to escape anyway. He was just hungry for attention, probably. That didn’t make him any less intimidating, of course. That hesitation showed on her worried face.

'Sings-Backwards..." He tasted these words, rolling them slowly over his tongue. He straightened one foreleg, and bent the other, in a little sort of bow. "Very nice to meet you, Sings-Backwards." This time, her name just slipped out of his mouth, easy as a snake's tongue. He wasn't one to forget a name, or a face for that matter.

"I would suggest you look around this area and remember it's appearance. For next time, of course. So you may avoid such a particularly dangerous spot." He said this rather sincerely, until he came to the word 'dangerous', which somewhat turned into a low growl. And as he spoke he began to walk towards her, slowly, in no rush to get there. His ears were perked up, taking in all of the sounds around them, and as he would suspect, there was a slight splash in the water. It was barely a sound, but he knew what it meant. In case the doe hadn't heard it through her own nervousness and knees knocking together, he spoke, rather gruffly, "We should leave this place... Now." His face turned slightly towards the water and then back towards the doe. "The crocodile is back again. He might even venture so far as to pull himself out of the water. We're faster than he is, but it would be wise not to tempt fate by staying here much longer. He sounds..." His nose turned up to sniff the air, then continues in that low rumbling, "Hungry... and I'm sure the smell of your fear appeals to him, too."

Leave? Sings-backwards turned her head wildly in the designated direction. Clearly, that crocodile from earlier was coming back. Like a hunted beast, she rapidly stepped back, exactly as she did during the first encounter. “So it does smell my fear. I’ll fix that in an instant. T-trust me, I won’t forget that place, and I’m not coming back until I’m shown that monster’s b-bare bones.”

She was still shaking, making her steps unsteady. Then she felt a branch brushing against her ribs, and turned to walk forward but still looking back, so she could keep an eye on Nightmare too, as much as possible. Calming down was another priority as she was getting away, but her body language and stutter in her reedy voice betrayed her emotions. “Let’s go! As long as we go faster than it, it c-can’t try and outsmart us.”
And by outsmarting, she meant “hiding behind a corner with the jaws wide open”. There’s only so much brainpower a crocodile, even experienced, can display, but all it needs is the element of surprise.

He followed along, step for step while she walked backwards, and when she turned around, he pulled up next to her. Their height difference became clearer here. He noticed that her head came upto his chin. As he was a rather tall kimeti himself, this didn't surprise him, but he made this note of her size, anyway. They walked along rather erratically, following the doe's lead. Yes, he knew the area rather well, but he didn't have any particular place to be right now, so he let her choose the way.

They began passing more and more trees, the water was now a distant twinkle behind and to their right. The foliage overhead began thickening, letting less sun through. Shadows began creeping into and around the tree trunks. Nightmare felt at ease now. The darkness comforted him. Though he had not shown it, he was wary of the crocodile, too. He saw what it could do on land, and did not want to ever be a part of that lethal dance. But he had stayed calm... quite unlike this pretty little thing...

Softly, the buck sniffed at the female at his side as they walked. She still smelt like fear, but not nearly as bad as before. Though there was another smell dominating her aura.... was it one of panic? He couldn't tell. Rather curious as to what was going through the doe's mind, he spoke in his low voice, "Do you think it will stray this far from the water? Just to chase down a pair of kimeti? Seems like a long way to go for just one meal..." He looked around them, taking in the area and its dark trees. He was curious as to where she was taking them, or if she even knew for that matter. But he was a patient buck, he would wait for her to voice her opinion.

Sings-backwards was more or less walking blindly, dominated by her primal instinct to survive. If it weren’t for Nightmare, she would have kept going until she arrived at a more familiar location. Hearing the question made her slow down along her path. Rational thoughts rushed in again.
“Oops… you’re right.”
Her legs stopped completely to lean against a trunk. Catching her breath slowly, she replied to the male’s question: “We’re safe here. Unless it is a very, very fierce crocodile, or there is another one in the area. Which I doubt.”
All the running drained her. The shaking stopped, but if one paid attention to tired eyelids over her clear eyes, mistrust and fear were still present, though faint. More than that, she was jaded.
What use is there anymore in fearing Midnight’s Shadow? He obviously knew the swamp more than her. She was too cowardly to stay and watch predators. Other than basic, primal knowledge of their behaviour and appearance, the doe was so ignorant. She preferred going away at the first occasion rather than observing individuals and toying with them; she identified herself too much with a prey for this.
Of course, Sings-backwards was still disturbed by the male’s appearance, and she didn’t know what to expect from him. However, she decided to go to hell with it, and just see what happens. She could as well fully embrace her inner prey and see if Nightmare is similar in more ways than one to imaginary demons; after all, sudden death was pretty much the only kind meant to her. She turned to face the kimeti, apprehensive, but calm. “What are we going to do… now?”
PostPosted: Fri Sep 04, 2009 1:15 pm

He walked until she stopped to lean against a tree. Watching this doe, Midnight's Shadow also stopped. He shuffled his feet until he found a comfortable place for each hoof. Locking his knees, he stretched his neck toward the sky as she spoke of the crocodile. His eyes closed lazily and a yawn crept up on him. Bringing his head back down, the yawn tore at his mouth, stretching his lips away from his bright white teeth, inadvertently baring them at the doe before him. His eyes slowly opened when the yawn came to an end, to look at Sings-Backwards.

Nightmare's tail swished back and forth contentedly when she asked her latest question. His head tilted to the side a little, slowly lowering. A glint came into his eyes and a slight shiver ran along his spine as he tried to form the right sentence to answer the female with. One step forwards, and then another took him to the right of the doe. He turned around and took those two steps again, but in the opposite direction, and in doing so began to pace back and forth from the grey female's right to her left.

"What we do, is all upto you, my dear... I for one... don't have anything to do at this very moment." He spoke without looking at Sings-Backwards, but his voice began to deepen as he continued to speak. "I've no idea what you have in mind, or if you even know where you are for that matter.... But now that I think about it... I am growing a little...." He stopped, looked over his shoulder, planting his glowing red eyes on the striped doe before growling one word, "hungry."

This was such a courageous wish, a well-meant one. But alas, Sings-backwards was wishing to be someone she really was not at core. Rationalizing, making sense of the whole situation, all of this soon stopped counting. It only took one more growl from the stranger for instinct to rush in. No more thought, just a chill down her spine and four legs that left the ground, one by one. In an instant, she had disappeared, away from the pond, the crocodile, Midnight’s Shadow, and everything else. The doe had the location much too memorized to get near the critical spots again, and even though she wandered erratically while getting away, there was no risk that her panic blinded her to the point of going back.
Later, when she would go back to her senses and think straight again, Sings-backwards would have mixed feelings about the encounter; way too many creepy things tickling ancestral memories, but also, an interesting kimeti she wouldn’t mind seeing again. Only, this time, in broad daylight, and in the safety of a familiar place.

((Ahah, I'm an horrible rper. I'm sorry for making you wait this long; my computer died some time ago. I hope you don't mind me finishing this rp early, and that we'll have a chance to rp both of them again soon. sweatdrop ))
