....from what I've been told/heard.....they are believed to have formed from the collapse of a star that went supernova.

hmm ok... I know that most are based off the Roman names for Greek Gods (since the Romans essentially adopted their entire religion after theirs proved unsuccessful after a series of natural disasters).
mercury - I think this is named after hermes the messenger god.
venus - Venus is named after aphrodite the goddess of love
earth - aka Gaia a nature goddess (i think)
mars - The god of war
jupiter - named after Zeus
saturn - damn...Saturn is farmiliar. I'm not sure if it's hephatus (can't spell) the ugly blacksmith god, or whether it's anotehr god or not named after a god at all ><
uranus - I don't think this is a god name, but I'm not sure... I thought one of the planets was named after athena, but that might be a moon...
neptune - Named after posidon the god of the sea
pluto - I think this is after Hades the God of death.
bonus - apollo (as in appollo 13, and the moon landings) is named after the roman god too :3
