Light was swiftly fading as Chantily made her way along the game trail, the filtered muted tones of dusk casting lengthy shadows before her. It would probably be wise to pause soon and seek a place to shelter the tan female thought quietly to herself. And yet despite these thoughts her paws kept moving forward. Clearly they had no intention of stopping.
And her mind - well her mind wasn't in to much of a hurry to make them listen - so she continued forward. Each step one more pace away from the pack she'd left behind and one more step into the unknown. Or rather one more step away from what had once been a pack - they were all dead now. Foolish beasts she cursed them under her breath with a soft growl, foolish selfish lazy creatures - if only they had listened.
No matter now she reminded herself - the past was just that - the past and it was to the future she ought to be concerning herself. She had crossed into these unknown lands several days ago and had yet to meet another wolf, part of her fervently wished the wolves here would turn out to be more then the indulgent creatures of her home, but even in the best of forests there was bound to be rotten logs...and Chantily had a mind to clear them away.
Her inner musings were quickly squashed as a sharp musky scent filled the beta's nose, Skidding to a halt she peered about with narrowed eyes, green orbs falling on the tell tale scratching post of what by the looks of it was a very large bear. And he was still somewhere near by.
"Oh ruddy hell..."
she muttered under her breath, see what happened when you get caught up in your own thoughts? you forget to pay attention to the forest around you. Perhaps the bear - a male by the smell of him wouldn't notice her - or if she was lucky be in a benevolent mood if he did.

Oh he was in for it this time! How dare that bear think he could get away with stealing his food! Otashii just wouldn't put up with thieves, they were lazy and sneaky and just aweful. He'd spent all morning at that river trying to catch that salmon and then the bear had just come along and made a huge fuss with his grumbling and growling, trying to scare Otashii off. Well, Otashii may be a little foolish sometimes but he sure wasn't stupid enough to take on a full grown male bear by himself, so he'd backed off. A bit.
Was it his fault he couldn't help his own growling and snarls as he stood a mere ten feet away, watching the lazy, fat creature move for his very delicious looking fish? Surely it hadn't been his fault that the bear was so easily agitated! But Otashii had accomplished what he'd set out to do, and that was getting the bear's attention off of his meal. "Oh stars in the sky.." He said, his voice higher than usual as his growling cut off and he took a few steps back. Well, perhaps he was stupid. "Come now bear, you know very well that had been mine! Try your paw at fishing yourself, why do-" His eyes went wide because as he was speaking he was backing up very slowly, though it just seemed to encourage the bear to come closer, very obviously not pleased.
But then the bear had ran forward a few feet, causing Otashii to scramble backwards faster than his legs wanted to carry him, resulting in his body making contact with the earth. "Going to die... going to die.." He mumbled to himself, paw flung over his face before he realized he was being a right coward and if he was to die wouldn't it be better to do it staring death in the face? He let his paw drop and twisted into a sitting position, swallowing. "Well, do your worst, bea-" He trailed off again as he stared ahead of him, ears flattening against his skull.
The bear had moved back to the fish, which was obviously more important than Otashii. The male wolf just shook his head and sighed, clambering back to his paws and slipping into the woods just behind him. Well, he could always find a new meal. Maybe someone to share it with, it was always a little heart breaking coming upon some of those stray pups who couldn't hunt for themselves. Still, it was also very rewarding to be able to help them. A bittersweet sort of feeling, he guessed.
But before he got much further another wolf came right into his view, cream colored with spidery white markings running down her back and around her face. His ears perked and he slowed his gait, but a smile was present on his face because he never allowed himself to believe a female could be hostile. "I'd be careful miss, there's a bear over near the stream. I think if you're hunting you might want to travel that way a bit." He nodded his head in the opposite direction she looked to be coming from and also a way which led her away from the bear, not realizing she'd already smelt him. "In fact I'm on the hunt myself seeing as that bear has probably already gobbled mine up... care to join me?" Two wolves hunting were better than one, after all, and he simply saw it as a way to help out a female 'in need'.

Chantily was still considering her options when out of the forest popped another wolf. This was a far better option then having a bear pop out at her but Chantily gave him a rather withering look anyways - hated being startled she did, by anything. Of course as she only glanced at him for a brief second before peering around him to ensure he was indeed the only thing coming out of the forest for the moment it was quite possible he either missed the look entirely or misinterpreted it as he went on about the bear stealing his food.
The forest seemed clear however and Chantily looked back at the wolf who had startled her, he reddish colored creature, with a white mask - made his eyes stand out rather alot in her opinion - and further framed by odd designs of black. Not that she was one to speak on odd designs of course.
"really?" she remarked rather dryly, still a bit miffed about being startled "I hadn't noticed". Surely anyone with half a wit would take note of the bears stench hanging in the air. Smelly creatures bears. Mind back on the current situation Chantily she reminded herself, no time for lolly gagging now - you've got company. Company - it had been a while since she'd had the pleasure and he was the first she'd run across since crossing into these strange lands. might as well make friendly she figured - perhaps get a bead on how things went around here.
"Stole your kill did he?" She continued in reference to the bear. "Rotten creatures bears - need a whole pack to root them out once their settled and even then quite a nasty task, I expect we could rustle up something else then...must be lots of game around here" Can't be running off and refusing to help someone in need after all, she thought to herself. Would be quite rude and though he didn't look ill fed well who was she to say when he'd eaten last, and why pass up the chance for a decent meal herself?.

Otashii was oblivious to the dry tone she was using, visions of being helpful blocking his rationality completely. Doing a good deed for another was like an instant high, he always enjoyed doing what was right and helpful; clearly it was right to help the hungry wolfess. Assumed hungry wolfess, anyhow. Besides, the company was also much appreciated. The hero's path was often a lonely one to walk, but Otashii wouldn't stray from it no matter how desperate he was for company.
"He had very well might have been hiding in the trees until I caught my fish." He said, sounding astounded before giving a light chuckle. "Not much a lone wolf can do in that situation, less he want's to get his neck snapped." He was more than alright with leaving out the bit that he'd tried to hassle the bear into getting his meal back. "Might be nice to run in a pack." He stated a little quieter this time, in an off hand kind of manner. "In any case, quite a bit to hunt in these parts indeed. At least, that's the general impression I've gained after my few days of hanging around. Now... do you fancy something a bit larger like a buck? Or are rabbits and the like more to your tasting miss?" He'd began to walk ahead of her, leading as it was only natural to do, before glancing over his shoulder.
It was too bad he hadn't found a pond or lake about, geese were one of his favorite meals. "Ah, I'm being terribly rude, forgive me. What may I call you? You can address me as Otashii, miss."

"Chantily"
she introduced herself in an offhand manner as he started off down the trial. bears were rather sneaky creatures she reflected but Chantily found herself seriously doubting they were clever enough to have lain in wait among the tree's. more then likely he'd just been caught off guard she thought to herself - but really no point in starting an argument she reflected trotting after him at a swift pace until she drew even with him on the trail.
"There are only two of us.."
She reminded him with a sideways glance - a buck to her thoughts might be a bit ambitious for two wolves - good way to get gored through and while she wasn't afraid to die for the right reason - deer gored was not on her short list of 'good ways to die'.
"Perhaps a doe"
She stated although phrased like a question her tone did not reflect it as such. just have to watch out for their hooves - but definitely doable with a little care she thought to herself before tunring her attentions back to her companion.
"So your not from around here then?"

He often forgot how easy it was to lead wolves into thinking he was serious when he was simply joking, he just hoped it was usually over trivial matters instead of important details. Chantily didn't remark further on the bear, causing Otashii to think he'd probably said something a bit off about the subject. Maybe he needed to work on his social skills more? Still, he thought he was being a wonderful gentleman. "Well it's nice to make your acquaintance, Chantily."
As she pointed out there were only two of them he just shot a grin over at her. "Ah, don't go underestimating yourself!" Actually, he didn't get that the female was being realistic where as he was being foolishly optimistic, so much so he could have gotten hurt if he'd decided this all on his own. "Though if you do prefer the doe I have no qualms about it, I think that will also be lovely." Ah this would be a good hunt, a nice little day.
His eyes had half-way shut as they slipped through the woods, his nostrils flaring and his ears perked as he tried to detect any of the small noises giving hint to deer around the parts. "Ah, not exactly." He said slowly, glancing over his shoulder again. "Though I wasn't born all too far from here. This is my first time being this far west though, it's quite nice. And what about you, were you born in this are-aaaah!" His body had suddenly lunged forward and no longer was he continuing on the conversation with her. Since he hadn't been watching where he was headed he hadn't realized there was a fairly steep hill ahead of them.
He'd gone when step too far and his paw had plunged down further than the even ground, further than he'd been expecting. That had gotten rid of his balance completely and there was no helping the rolling bag of fur that was Otashii that went flying down the hill, almost in a comical manner, before he came to a painful sounding flop on his back at the bottom with a small yip and then a groan. Oh, this was not going to feel pleasant tomorrow! "C-chantily?" He called, twisting just slightly to try and peer up the hill.
Luckily for him he hardly ever felt embarrassment or shame, he never really felt a reason to. He never did anything bad, so that scratched off the shame, and he felt it was more than okay that a wolf made a mistake every now and again, so that got rid of embarrassment. He didn't seem to realize he made many mistakes each day, little things that shouldn't have happened in such an abundance.

Chantily was content to pad along with the red male - Otashii she reminded herself as he chattered on, adding in the appropriate niceties as required. "The pleasure is mine I'm sure" she remarked politely. She was rather pleased when he agreed to try for a doe rather then a buck - he seemed like an ambitious sort and Chantily was half-expecting a bit of arguing over that point.
Like him Chantily has half busy gazing about the area, vivid green eyes searching for any tell-tale signs of deer.she was jolted out of her search when his voice suddenly denoted a disaster in the making, jerking her head about in settlement she dashed forward to watch him tumble down the hill - it might have been funny - if not for the terrible sound of his final landing.
"Oh dear..."
Chantily winced and muttered to herself as she scrambled down the hill after him, tail pinwheeling behind her as she tried to both keep her balance and hurry down to him as quickly as possible.
"I'm coming! I'm coming! just stay still"
She called down to him when - thankfully - he called out to her, at least he was conscious, that had been a rather nasty hit at the bottom there and Chantily's mind ran ahead of her body thinking up all the horrible injuries such a fall could produce. Leaping over a small log - which he had pinwheeled over , small blessing that, the female wolf skid to a stop next to the red male and without preamble nosed about his legs and ribs while chastising him.
"Really! a fall like that is quite dangerous you know!...ought to watch where your going, vigilance! vigilance! all sorts of danger and evilness out there just waiting to jump up and snap you to bits - and not all of it is from other creatures you know!"
Although her words could be seen as harsh and temperamental her eyes and inspection showed nothing more then concern. when her tirade had ended she huffed a few times before continuing in a quieter voice.
"Are you alright?"

As she'd called that she was coming and to stay still he was already in the middle of trying to twist himself over, but with a sharp whine he realized that wasn't going to happen. Maybe he just needed a few more moments of rest? Oh this was terrible, though he felt very blessed that he'd been with another wolf as it'd happened. Still, he was also thinking of all the trouble he was causing miss Chantily and he thought it was a bit silly he was making a female attend to him, even though he should be protecting her and keeping his health tip-top while bringing her on a hunt!
In any case he'd layed his head back with a sheepish look on his maw, he wouldn't lie about having tried to move if he was asked but it wasn't as if he'd done it after she called to stay still. He took spills like this often enough to have thought he'd be okay just walking away from it. And he winced as she began to lecture him but after a moment into it he gave a small smile, though it faltered when she began to nose about the left side of his rib cage and almost on impulse he let out a small growl, body twisting just slightly before he tried to be still again, because that had hurt quite a bit more than when her nose had come in contact with his side. "Well, we can hardly blame the hill for jumping out and trying to snap me to bits, eh?" He said lightly, though he did believe what she was stating. Still, it was different than being attacked by some dastardly evil hiding in the shadows and not even announcing itself before attacking.
"But of course I will be more careful next time... I do believe I cracked a rib." He did not at all sound happy about that, though at best he could have just bruised it and at worse he could have broken it. "Ah forgive me... placing you into all this unneeded drama, hmm? And here I thought I was being helpful bringing you to hunt.." He chuckled softly, though he was growing annoyed at himself with this awfully exposed position he had to stay in. What if something attacked? Oh his belly was so easy to get at! And his throat, it was the first time he was beginning to feel a bit ashamed. Why hadn't he been more careful? "Fat lot of help I've been, eh?"
After a moment he glanced at her, wondering if she'd get mad at what he was about to do in a moment. Well, there was no helping it. He couldn't very well lay there until that bear wandered this way! He shifted his weight and decided to try and roll to his paws from the side that didn't hurt, though it still caused strain on his bones which did. He snarled slightly from the sharp tug of pain as he managed to rolled to his stomach, leaning more to one side than the other. After he managed to get that far he lay panting for a moment, more than conscious of Chantily standing near him. Well this certainly was a weird first impression to give, wasn't? "Though I must say it was lucky I was leading because it's better me than you getting hurt, isn't it?" Though he wasn't sure she'd actually have the same sort of accident..

"No but we can most definitely blame you for not watching where your going!"She retorted, ignoring his little growl as she discovered the hurt rib and then softened slightly, he was wounded after all and yelling at someone who had already hurt themselves seemed somewhat over done. I mean he must have learned something from this...right?
"I think your right" She replied in a softer tone. "but at least it wasn't a leg" She continued, sending him a slightly arched look as she continued - help her?she nearly snorted - though she supposed he might know the area more she was quite sure she could have handled the hunt all on her own if she'd had too. It wouldn't have been the first time. Of course she other then slightly pursed lips she didn't comment or react openly to these thoughts. Wounded she reminded herself - the poor beast is wounded and you can't very well just leave him here laying all Topsy turvy now can you? Of course not - wouldn't be right in any sense of the word.
"Never mind that now - I don't expect you'll be doing much for a while, leading - hunting or otherwise..."
She remarked glancing back up the hill - how on earth had he managed to miss seeing an entire hillside. Turning back she eyed him critically."Do you think you could walk if you leaned on me some? We'll be needing to find a safer place for you to rest up - a place where I won't ave to worry about wandering bears while I hunt for you"

Yes, he certainly had been at fault for looking back to her rather on concentrating on where he was headed. Still, he thought it was more polite to look at the wolf you were directing you words to. Still, he'd let the matter settle; he found no use to try and make what he'd been doing seem less foolish, it would just be making excuses.
She confirmed that his rib was probably cracked, though at least it was only one. At least he could still move about, however gingerly. Oh he felt so foolish for having this happen to him, especially when it all could have been avoided. He supposed that was the beauty of hindsight, and perhaps he'd start becoming more careful. Truthfully if he'd started being more careful the first time he'd ever had similar experiences he probably would have been a very conscious wolf of his surroundings, but that wasn't what happened. He always liked to think he'd be better off after an accident, less prone to causing trouble for himself, but usually the careful attitude only lasted a few days and the event would slip away from his mind. "Yes... at least it wasn't a leg." He repeated her words, sounding truly thankful that it wasn't the case because then he might be really in trouble. He didn't belong to a pack, had no one to help him if something like that happened. He'd heard many stories of lone wolves being unable to survive because of broken legs.
His ears flicked back as she stated he wouldn't be doing much in the next coming days. Weeks? He wasn't sure how long it would take for his rib to heal... though it would take much longer seeing as he was a lone wolf and couldn't very well go without food for more than a week. He'd have to hunt in the condition he was in and he was sure it would not be any fun at all. "Not for a day or two, anyhow." He said softly, trying to offer up a kind and slightly abashed smile. Now that he'd rested a moment from rolling over the pain had slipped back to something more dull and bearable and he took a moment to climb back to his shaky paws, shifting very slightly and trying to place more weight on his right side, the side that was not hurt. "Lean on you?" He glanced to her and realized he felt very thankful to this female, it was apparent she carried a very kind heart within her. All of this was beginning to seem a bit backwards to him. Because of his own foolishness he was causing her trouble, even though he'd only been trying to help. Maybe he could just do it himself? He took a few steps forward and his lip curled and his teeth were bared as he choked back a snarl of pain, ears flicking back against his skull.
"Well, I suppose it can't be helped." He was not trying to offend her, he simply didn't like the fact that he was making her help so much when it should have been him helping her out! "I think perhaps we should try heading straight for a bit... perhaps we will get lucky and an unoccupied den would be nearby. If not maybe some bushes.." He said, his voice growing distracted as he thought of where it might be best to sit. He was even making a female hunt for him... oh he was the worst! He swallowed and glanced to her, looking troubled. "Somehow I must repay you... it isn't very nice of me to be getting hurt after just meeting you and making you do all of this work for me after all.." He felt like one of those scummy conwolves he'd heard about... he couldn't believe wolves actually tricked strangers into doing this sort of thing!

"Isn't very..." Chantily looked at Otashii a little bit blankly - his words were startling to her, was he actually apologizing for hurting himself? How incredibly silly...and somewhat endearing. Realizing that she was staring and must look fairly silly in doing so she hastened on "Well its not like you did it on purpose, and anyways I don't really have any place else I need to be so your not really putting me out at all".
Eying the land before them she started forward, trying to choose the easiest path and keeping their pace slow. Piteously slow..but it couldn't be helped really - she didn't want to cause him any undue pain after all. Eye's darting about for a suitable stopping point she started talking again - perhaps a conversation would keep his mind off his wounds.
"besides -what is the point of living if you don't do so for the benefit and help of others" she continued in her earlier vein of helping him - it really wasn't a burden in her mind and she wouldn't have him keep thinking he owed her for doing what any civilized wolf should be honor bound to do in the first place. "I have been traveling for so long it might be nice to settle down with some company for a time" She finalized in a rather cheery voice.

Now he had to think this over... after she brought him to a safe spot to sit and weight she would go hunt... as much as he thought it was wrong to make her do all of this work for him he was also immensely happy of it. Mostly he felt he must have just been making it more complicated than it was in his mind, but he was sure he was not the only wolf who would do that. "Well then... it's good to know I am not keeping you from any important meetings or the like." He stated, once again his tone cheerful.
His tail flicked just a little and he chuckled softly. "Yes, I think that is a beautiful way to live." He couldn't have summed it up more nicely himself, though he was much more used to being on the helping others end of the idea and not the one being helped. Or so he thought in his head, anyhow. He couldn't help that he was a bit clumsy and happened to cause trouble for strangers when he ran into them, as rare as that might have been. "Well Chantily I've always enjoyed running into others. It's often very nice listening to different stories wolves offer of their travels and struggles." Most of the time he liked running into others, as long as they weren't mean or scummy. He was surprised though, sort of. After the initial slight... awkwardness? No... more or less it was coolness toward him he thought, but after all of that she seemed fairly social to him. Maybe the wolf numbers in these parts were beginning to decrease? A sad day, that would be. "But tell me, does that mean you have not run in with others of late or your meetings have just been brief?" He kept the worry from touching his voice, instead sounding if he was merely curious.

Chantily chuckled slightly as he seemed relieved not to be keeping her from anything important, he was a fairly fretful wolf wasn't he? at least when it came to putting others out, or precieving that he did. It wasn't necessarily a bad trait she thought - it showed if nothing else that he meant well which was far more then most wolves these days who were out only for themselves.
Her eyes ticked sideways as he remarked on her comment about how one should live,it's not that she'd expected him to disagree persay - but it was still somewhat unique to hear someone agree with her - of course she only had the mutterings of her old pack to go on and they were hardly wolves to which others ought to be compared. The memories made her huff slightly, and when he stated liking stories she added in her own thoughts on the subject. "Sometimes - though some of the stories can be disheartening, or at the very least somewhat discouraging when considering they are perpetrated by your fellow wolves" she spoke quietly and afterwards shook her head slightly to clear the memories.
Padding along for a few moments in silence before he spoke again Chantily caught site of a long boughed pine, its sweeping branches brushed the ground. Chantily in her travels had often slept beneath just such a pine - the area beneath the heavy branches and the trunk was quite roomy - almost like a living cave, the interlocking branches kept the winds and rain out and the heady scent made it near impossible for those passing by to smell you. Long boughed pines were a travelers best friend.
"I'm afraid I've been traveling for quite some time across land not very populated, you are the first wolf I have run across in this area. what do you think of there?" she pointed her muzzle in the direction of the pine.

He smiled weakly when she touched on the spots he hadn't mentioned in his speech, nodding to agree with her. "Still, I think each wolf can be changed in their ideas and behavior.." He said slowly, considering as he was speaking rather than before he let loose his words. But as he thought it over only afterwords he found he still very much agreed with himself. Wolves, he believed, were not born bad but grew up to be bad based on things they experienced in life. Still, some wolves had the extraordinary strength to beat the odds. He'd heard of wolves who grew with cruel, terrible parents or packs who had seen only evil-hearted events going on that had become wonderful adults themselves, kind and caring and always willing to do the right thing. Wolves who were taken in by the two-legs and beaten, not let out to hunt or even fed. He'd heard of many who escaped back into the woods with their spirits unbroken, their hearts unmoved toward hatred for two-legs.
Of course, for every good story he'd heard, he'd just as likely gotten a story of the wolves who'd turned bad from bad experiences, grown up to be cruel and unkind though nothing seemed to trigger that mindset from their pasts. "Which can be good or bad, of course." He concluded a bit sadly, sighing slightly. "But it's still always good to carry faith in our brothers and sisters, even the cruelest of minds can be changed." Or disposed of, if worse came to worse. He did not voice this out loud because he was unsure how she would respond to it, and a little unsure how he felt about having a thought like that. Was it wrong?
He came away from his thoughts and once again focused on what it meant, the lack of wolves around lately. Perhaps nothing, though perhaps it was the beginning of something dangerous or heartbreaking... the decline of their own kind. He made no comment and was happy that she continued on with where he'd be staying, no need to find a change of topic himself. His gaze took in the shadowed, well hidden spot and his tail gave a few wags. It would hurt a bit ducking down under the lowest branches and maneuvering toward the middle, but it would be worth it. "It looks like a good, safe spot." He said, stating the obvious. "Very good eyes, you have there." He smirked as he said it, as if he found something slightly amusing about it. He'd been so focused on speaking he had forgotten to be looking around for a place to stay. "Well.." He glanced around slowly, ears perking as he took a tentative step away from the she-wolf and toward the pine. "Best of luck in the hunt?" He offered up slightly sheepishly. Certainly he was accepting the help, but he still couldn't get over feeling a bit bad about the whole ordeal.

"Of course" she responded as he spoke of having faith in her fellow wolves - although Chantily thought rather sadly that many seemed quite pleased to continue following the evil paths they'd chosen. She was not about to bring up such nasty thoughts at the moment however, and she held her tongue on what she thought such vicious creatures should be dealt as well.
Ignoring his compliments on her eyesight Chivosi trotted ahead of him and shouldered some of the branches aside as best she could - hoping to make his entry as easy as she possibly could. The last thing she needed after all was for him to injure himself worse while trying to get inside - and she had the odd feeling that that is exactly what would happen if she ran off to hunt right away. "Right in you go then..I shouldn't be gone to long, what do you fancy? rabbit? coon? perhaps a goose if I can find a waterway?" She questioned him, stubbornly ignoring the sheepish look on his face for as long as she could before letting out a little huff of exasperation. "If it makes you feel better I'll let you hunt for me a few times once your well again" she finally stated with a bemused expression on her face.
