He felt somewhat hollow inside, strange for one who felt that his large build was still growing larger as the weeks passed; adulthood was on the horizon, and he would be but a shell of his puppyself in figure: skeletal, thin, constantly wandering from the den Blithra had set up. His search for food was meager at best despite her teachings, and he sighed quietly to himself as he walked.

It had been several days since the strange incident with a pup and a she-wolf called Korrigan, whom was promised to take him to the humans soon. But he wanted to build up some strength before that trip, and thus had set forth into the forest to look for the meal. Strange roaring sounds came to him from the distance: waterfalls, he remembered they were called, or cataracs. Like belching mouths of water. The scents of settled wolves nearby, however, made him wary to cross closer into the territory, even as he saw a squirrel dart towards the water.

Nothing had happened the last time he had crossed pack boundaries. But was tempting Fate a second time wise, even if he hungered?

Adieu yawned and snorted as it was interrupted as she spotted a fish suddenly lurching out of the water! She'd been playing the game for a few hours now, but was growing bored with it. No long was there any satisfaction with the loud, slippery noise of her paw smacking against the slippery surface of the large fish; when it happened, anyhow. This one had been a mistake, clearly she should have ditched the game by now. She'd lurched forward too fast and too far on her sitting place, a large boulder, and suddenly yelped as her whole body propelled forward into the river. A large splash followed and it took her several minutes to surface, make her way to the bank and then scramble out, huffing and panting with her eyes wide. "Damn fish!" She snarled, shaking off. It was in good humor though because after a moment she was chuckling, thinking it would have been funnier had more wolves been present.

She plopped down for a moment, licking a bit at both of her front paws before her nose wrinkles, a small wind fluttering past. Her head was brought up and her gaze flicked wildly about. New scent! Her tail wagged a few times as she lurched forward, springing from her seated position and went loping along the bank of the river without any thought that the stranger might be dangerous.

Her stomach grumbled as she went along and it made glance back from the way she'd come from. Her ears flicked back slightly in annoyance. Clearly it wasn't fair to become aware of hunger once you were away from the food! "Stupid fish." She huffed under her breath, this time the good humor was gone. She looked forward again and wuffed slightly, deciding perhaps some fresh, warm, red meat was in order anyhow. She didn't really believe that having a main diet of fish was any good, even though she grew up on it, and enjoyed the hunt of a while beast much more than the patience of waiting for a fish. She assumed there was just something about her father that made him chose that sort of life style; felt bad for other furry animals, maybe? She knew her mother went along with the fish thing but she was also aware that the alpha female did not limit herself just to the slimy, cold creatures like her father did.

Her gait slowed after another few minutes when she realized she hadn't seen another wolf at all. She stopped completely and lifted her head, sniffing a bit before looking around and squinting at her surroundings. That was odd... her nose couldn't be going wonky, could it? Ah! There! Her gaze had finally landed on the other's form and it was lucky he happened to be on the other side of the river. She could just hear her father's words now, Adieu it is good to give every wolf a chance but you must approach life with a bit of caution... caution, pah! She was sure she'd made enough noise to attract attention so she let herself relax, nothing hostile in her body language, and offered up another wuff that was slightly louder this time. "Hiya! Traveling, yeah?"

Squirrel, oh squirrel, where art thou . . . The sound that startled him to a small yelp, however, was not at all the succinct chitter of the long-tailed creature, but rather that of one he could comprehend more: another wolf across the river was addressing him it appeared, and Denzel stepped back instinctively. Had she heard the sounds of his metal mouth on the forest floor? But he was getting better at making it quieter, by dragging it subtly and slowly unlike hte rest of his paws, giving him a dilapidated gait.

What had the wolfess said? "Trah. Vehl." Denzel broke the words into two quiet syllables in that deep baritone of a voice, lowering his head and averting his eyes to show immediate submission to her. "Trah-vehl-eeng. Huhnt . . . trah-vehl-huhnt." Wasn't he doing both anyway? Maybe it sounded supsicious, like he meant to steal food . . . but he hadn't said "steal", so she couldnt' say he was, right? Thinking too hard again; hurt the brain.

Her onyx colored gaze narrowed slightly as he took a step back though it was not a hostile look, rather it seemed to be more puzzled than anything. Had she startled him? Her head tilted just a bit to the left as her eyes traveled over his body, trying to judge his age. It was no use, he simply looked like a fully grown wolf to her; hell, most adolescents looked that way to Adieu. She wasn't about to kid herself, she mostly was able to tell apart very young pups and older wolves.

She gave her tail a little wag but was completely frozen as the male began to speak. Her eyes had gone a bit wide and her head had tilted even further to the side. What a funny way of speaking! Or maybe he was just thirsty... nah, she didn't think wolves really talked like that when their throats were dry. Still, it made him interesting! She would bet her right hind leg that he was a traveler with a lot of stories and adventures! That was saying something; that leg happened to be her favorite.

A wide smile appeared back on her mug and she resumed a more normal standing position, ears perking once again. "The mysteries of this life carry into the next.." She said softly, eyelids lowering to give a rather lazy look about her. Sometimes she just said whatever came to mind, whether it made sense or not.

Anyways, what she could make out was that he was a traveling hunter! Maybe he only hunted really exotic animals? Awesome! "Oooh, me too!" She yipped, even though she wasn't really a traveler, too tied down to her pack lands. Without another word she was pacing back a few steps and suddenly lunged forward, springing just as her paws hit the very edge of the bank and landing with a thud from one rock to a second before she made it to the other side. She may have been flighty and easily foolish enough to fall into streams, but at least she could cross it. "You should come hunt with me, tell me stories! I love travelers... and hunting's not that bad either, you know?" She beamed at him, shaking off a bit. She wasn't that close to him, but she wasn't aware that such a sudden decision to cross the stream to his side could have surprised him.

That pair of forest green eyes followed her every movement, bemused. Had he not shown the proper gestures of submission, did he not look a threat? Then why was it that the femme was making her way from rock to rock towards him, seeming to ignore his motions? The immediate thought was that she was going to attack him of course, deaf to her words momentarily as he stepped back even more. A straggling thought came to him: he had once tried that very same action but never had the coordination, always falling off within seconds on a slippery rock due to his not so good balance; not to mention water wasn't his favorite thing in the world to begin with.

But lo, she was speaking to him in a light tone! As per usual, it took Denzel a few moments longer than most to process the words, and he cocked his head with puppish confusion. Traveller, yes, but story teller? "No . . . no stories . . ." But his ears did perk at her offer, even if he did hold some suspicions of it. She certainly was older and well built, definitely part of pack and with better experience in these matters for it. He could use some help in catching that meager squirrel . . . So Denzel bobbed his head.

"Not bad. Help . . . Help hunt, not bad."

She hadn't caught his movement backwards at all, she was just excited at the chance of going hunting with a fellow traveler! And she could hear about new adventures, and then brag about it to- "No stories?" She piped up, ears lowering and her expression becoming unhappy for a minute at most. "Ah these weary paws are carried over the easiest path." The words were spoken more to herself than to the other, and again it was unclear if she meant anything by them or not.

She almost thought that because there were going to be no stories that he was going to refuse accompanying her. But after a moment he seemed to agree again, that helping her hunt wouldn't be too much trouble. She found his choppy speech to be charming, though Adieu always did enjoy strange matters. "Excellent, there are quite a few prey animals around here... you know, most of my pack stick to fish and all that. They must feel safer or something.." She rolled her eyes as she watched him more, then turned. "Probably this would be the best direction to head out in."

She had only taken a few steps before she'd glanced over her shoulder. "Oh yeah!" Sounding a bit surprised she grinned and whirled around again. "I'm Adieu, what should I call you? I always forget about introductions.." Which might have been because she was so terrible at matching names to scents and faces.

Fish? Fish were never safe as far as he was concerned, since it involved sitting in water, or slippery rocks, and getting wet - sometimes for nothing. Let bears fish, Denzel believed, and leave the chasing to the wolves; he wasn't made to sit there like a creature he wasn't and try to paw at something that was smoother than a worn pebble, and slimy to boot. No wonder this wolfess, this girl called Adieu, rolled her eyes; she probably knew it too.

Despite her introducing herself, Denzel blinked and was focused more upon the strange words murmured to herself, trying to repeat them slowly since they were confusing him so. How did they go? "Ah . . . these, these paws . . . paws are weary." Definitely wasn't the whole thing, but it made sense. "The easiest path . . . are carried . . . is carried over . . . what?" Adieu made to move after suggesting a course, and he followed with several steps before the dark wolf stopped.

Oh. The introduction. But his question first. "The. Easiest . . . path. Carried . . . carried what?" Denzel posed, with a perplexed frown, cocking his head. "These. Paws are. Weary."

Adieu blinked in surprise when instead of offering up his name in return he started to repeat what she'd said! She giggled slightly, only because most wolves just ignored things like that completely and went on with the present conversation, it was amusing even if he had it a bit backwards. Or maybe he was just stating that his paws were also weary? She wasn't entirely sure why but usually when she offered up bits of information wolves seemed to get a little confused.

Well, it wasn't like she needed his name and as her stomach gave a low rumble she began to move again, ears perked as she listened to his large paws carrying him behind. After a moment the others' sound of movement stopped so Adieu stopped as well, turning to look at him again. She guessed he really did want for her to answer. "Ah these weary paws are carried over the easiest path." She stated again, though this time she spoke much slower.

Though another chuckle spilled past her maw when she thought of the path carrying the weary paws; even though it was correct it sounded strange to her. She liked it though, she thought she might try and use that one next time. "When you are tired or trying to take it easy it is almost automatic to take the easiest path ahead of you, instead of wandering over a harder path." She explained, a little surprised because she'd never had to explain herself before. It was a bit refreshing, made her feel intelligent even though everything she was saying was irrelevant and a bit pointless.

But as they stood there she had finally caught sight oh his hind leg, and the thick piece of shiny around it, though she had yet to notice the small stretch of tail hanging from the band. "Have you been with two-legs?" She gasped out, sounding in awe as she moved forward slightly, head dipping down as if she wanted a better look. She'd never even seen a two-leg before, thought they were myths, but she had been told stories about them and the shiny bands were something they could put on wolves, weren't they? Not to mention, she glanced to his throat and then ear, they decorated their wolves with all sorts of things. Or so she had heard.

"Aaah . . ." She was patient with him, ever rewarding for the slow-minded wolf. And she repeated! This was the first he had seen any form of courtesy beyond his mother, and this made him want to try harder despite the speech impediment and slowness of tongue. "These-weary-paws-are-carried," Denzel began, his mouth feeling a little heavy; he was unused to speaking so much. "Over-the-easiest-path."

And then Adieu had the mind to explain it! Much sense did it make to him, even if he didn't have as much sesne to know which was easier or harder in paths. Was that metaphorical or literal? Or maybe he would know what was a hard path the minute he tread upon it? It probably had a ton of rocks and was by a river of some sort if it was hard to walk upon . . .

His companion's eye caught at last the metal ring about his leg and, remembering a semblance of kindness always was paid back with another, lifted his leg a little for her to look at it more closely. "Metal-mouth," Denzel replied with a small nod. "And feathers. And wood heart." This last one was directed towards the pendant against his chest, that which beat against his fur when he walked fast, like a heartbeat.

He wanted to give her an explanation too about the two-leggers, but his memory . . . Denzel's face scrunched up. His memory always grew hazy there. Like looking down into a hole inside of him, at the bottom of which rested mixed emotions.

"Not . . . not remember how. But there still."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 23, 2009 6:55 pm

Adieu nodded slowly as he named each two-leg type of thing on him, though they widened when he mentioned the wood heart and her gaze first flickered to his chest, almost thinking that they could have replaced his real heart with a wooden one and wondering how he was still alive if that was the case- but then her gaze caught circular wood hanging from the vine-like material around his neck. The two-legs type of vine that she was sure did not grow from the earth.

"Neat." The word was breathed out from her maw, barely audible as she moved closer, getting a better look of the wood-heart before glancing again to what he referred to as the metal-mouth. "Does that hurt you?" She backed up after a moment so she could meet his gaze and wait for an answer.

She wondered what it would be like to carry that knowledge of having been with the two-legs but not being able to remember any of it... she thought it would probably be terrifying, or at least a bit scary. She wondered if maybe she shouldn't have brought it up? But if he really couldn't remember he probably did not have any ill-feelings about the whole matter, right?

Did it hurt? No, not specifically . . . but it was an uncomfortable presence he had had to grow used to. "Cold," Denzel replied with a tiny shrug. "Sometimes. Somtimes much hotter. Takes light-from-sun. Like a . . . like a plant." But it didn't grow like a plant should, because then it would have slid off and he wouldn't have to worry about dragging that one paw across the ground a little so that the tongue wouldn't make that strange jingle click sound.

"Tight and loud. Sometimes. Do this -" - and Denzel motioned by taking a few steps forward, letting the backpaw slide across the floor, the chinks following ever so close behind - " - it softer. Slower. Help hunt . . . Not bad? Nonono." Repeating bad! He frowned and tried it at a slower pace. "Not. Help. Hunt." Yes, yes. "Not help hunt, bad. Noisy." He couldn't help his mother hunt as much and, growing too large for their den, a weary sense of having to leave her soon was creeping. He could barely hunt, but he could hardly stay with Blithra . . . right?
PostPosted: Tue Aug 25, 2009 1:00 pm

She frowned lightly and nodded after his words, taking each in and considering it. So most of the time it was cold but if he sat in the sun too long the object must have drank it up, like a plant. She wondered if there was a way to get it off? Eying it just a bit longer she realized she couldn't come up with any solutions, which made her sigh. She would have liked to help the male wolf. "The burdens we bare." She mumbled, more to herself than him. Still, he seemed kind and happy and as if he didn't let something that troublesome get him down, that was all Adieu could ask for in a wolf.

Her ears perked as he demonstrated the noise that the metal mouth could make and she frowned, shifting back slightly as if something bad might happen as a direct result of the noise. "That's terrible.." There was a slight growl in her words and she shook her head a bit before frowning. "I'm sure... you just haven't mastered hunting with it on... right?" She tried to offer optimistically. "Ah, right." She suddenly glanced to the left and jerked her head in that direction. "Let's go, I said we'd go hunting together, right?" She gave him a cheeky grin and then started to move away at a slow pace.

Hunt, hunt, hunt, hunt . . . So much chatter! He hadn't spoken for so much so long, it was a strange feeling. Had he really forgotten wha tthe sound of his own voice was? Pitiful that his throat felt dry; Denxel swallowed it down in hopes of wetting it long enough to let them get prey first. Easy enough, easy enough.

"Let-us-hope. Hope that . . . these. Weary. Paws. Are c-carried over the-easiest path." The beginning steps to full sentences withi na matter of minutes. Perhaps he should socialize more . . . Worse! He had forgotton completely to introduce himself in wake of their apparantly short attention spans. Her name, her name was . . .

"Adieu. Denzel," the young one said and, upon realization that perhaps he was speaking a bit too loudly than was allowed for hunting, said it again in a hushed tone. "Denzel." With that, he began to try and sniff the path before them, getting instead many wolves' scents; indeed, these packlands were well spoken for. It made him nervous.

She smiled again to reassure him that she didn't mind him coming to hunt with her, the noisy device attached to his paw was a disadvantage but she believed it was one that they could work past, eventually. "Denzel?" She repeated, chuckling at the first loud speaking of it. She was easy going, she didn't really take hunting all that seriously anyhow. Her own words were just above a whisper, but that just seemed to be the way she spoke. "Lovely. So you haven't hunted before?" Her words came slowly, because she seemed to begin concentrating more on the area around them.

Her gaze was scanning the land, her body was tense and lowered closer to the ground, but it was still easy for her to move slowly ahead. Her nostrils flared as she took in the scents around them and after a moment her body eased up again, tongue lolling from her mouth as she panted. She wasn't bad at hunting, it just was a lot of unneeded work. She stopped suddenly and glanced over her shoulder. "Say... have you ever fished?" She suddenly sounded much more excited, fishing was quite a bit easier than hunting things like deer and such.
