A Little Guide to Roleplaying...and maybe a laugh or two

~As our beloved and respected tyrant Captain, Wyvern683, (I even put her name in color, how nice.) decided it would a be truly wonderful idea to have a Roleplay, I thought those of you could use a little assistance getting started. Those of you who have roleplayed before, you can feel free to use this as a reminder or poke fun at any grammar mistakes that might come about in this tutorial. Please enjoy as I literally put my blood tears and sweat (notice the lack of commas xD) into writing this pointless and utterly ridiculous guide. (In this guide, there will be example with scenarios taken from the manga. I will be using characters that may have been claimed, but rest assured, I'm using them as examples only.)~

What is Roleplaying?

~Sometime in our pitiful lives, I imagine we will all ask this same question: "What the crow's nest is roleplaying?" Well, my dear friends, roleplaying is kind of like a little game between two or more people (*ahem* not that kind of game, ladies and gentlemen). Each person chooses one or more characters and basically becomes that character. As Hellsing fans, I'm sure we have all wanted to know what it's like to talk a walk in Alucard's boots, eh? Here's your chance, although it seems Vicious_Muffin_Man has beat us all to Alucard. I guess we can mug him later...~

~Anywho...roleplaying in simplest form is basically writing a story where many people are involved. It is almost like that game where one person will say a part of a story and the other people will continue it.~

What are the Rules?

~When you roleplay, you want to include what your character is doing at the time. Include setting, dialouge, and actions just like you would in a story. Also, make your posts detailed. Don't write one or two sentences unless you absolutely have to because this will lose the interest of the other people and ultimately cause the Roleplay to become...boring. This could lead to the fate of the entire Roleplay. You also want to be certain that you are interacting with the other person. Below is an example of what to do and what not to do.~

Good Example:
Person One: "Zzzz..." snored a figure covered with a crinkled newspaper, whose front page reported the destruction of London by what appeared to be Nazi-obsessed vampires. It was the middle of day, but the only visible light seemed to be coming from a ring of fire stretching far over the horizon.
Person Two: "Chief Maxwell...Chief!" a man shouted, his shadows casting over the sleeping person as if it were an omen of what was to become of him. Nearby, the thundering steps of thousands of men echoed.
Person One: "Hnnn? What is it?" a man groaned removing his paper quilt from his face, casting it aside hastilly as the footsteps were gathering nearer.

Bad Example:
Person One: A man sat snoring. Over his face was a newspaper. It was the afternoon.
Person Two: Another man shouted at the other man, who were sleeping. A lot of people were marching nearby.
Person One: The man acted as if he didn't hear the other guy and continued to sleep.

***There was a lot more wrong with the Bad Example other than Person Two's confusion of "were" and "was". For one thing, it was BORING. With sentences like that, the roleplay would lose popularity fast. Person One seemed like he didn't want to have anything to do with Person Two, which also makes the roleplay a bore. The first example had a lot of interesting details that set the atmosphere. While it could have been a bit longer, it is the perfect length for beginning roleplayers.***

~You need to keep in mind that not everyone in Hellsing can be as strong and shmexy as Alucard...or Maxwell. It would probably be best to ask Wyvern to see which are allowed to god-mode, which is just a fancy term for immortal and virtually unstoppable characters. There is also another term to keep in mind, and that is power-playing, which is controlling another person's actions or characters. Don't do this...seriously. It's quite annoying and may tick the other person over the deep-end. In a roleplay, this is the last thing you want to happen, m'kay? However, I guess I should remind you that even Alucard has to take a blow once in a while, which is what the example will explain...in way too much detail than it needed...^^; ~

Good Example:
Person One: A wisp of white smoke darted on to the battlefield as the Captain burst from the aura and came face-to-face with the red-clad vampire and armed priest. His emotionless eyes darted from side-to-side waiting for one of his opponents to make the first move. No matter who would attack first, he would be ready to strike with grace and ready aim.
Person Two: "Angel Dust" Anderson fell from the sky with anger in his heart. The fact that this war was created for no specific reason and so many innocent people were being unrightfully ripped from their lives was literally tearing him apart to the point where he wished he was never born a human. Now, he stood facing Alucard and Millenium's trump card, an opponent he knew little about, but he refused to let either of these unhuman monsters escape his grasp.
Person Three: Alucard grinned as the two strongest men on the field approached him. He was confident that neither of these enemies could defeat him, and if they did, that would be a plus too. He laughed in spite of the millions of corpses sprawled around him as if a throne for him to sit on. He began his wretched anthem, "The bird of Hermes is my name..."
Person Two: Anderson made the first strike sending a storm of bayonets straight for Alucard's black, endless heart. Anger flashed beneath his glasses, which he had to replace several times since he first faced the vampire.
Person Three: Alucard opened his arms, accepting the bayonets. "...Eating my wings...." he continued is that terrible, raspy voice.
Person One: Captain struck, jumping in the air and attempting to kick away Alucard's head. Undead or not, vampires couldn't fight without a head or heart, could they?
Person Three: Alucard did not even try to avoid the Captain's leg, which cut through his head as if it weren't there. "...To make me tame," he finished as all Hell seemed to break loose.

Bad Example:
(I'm going to skip the first three posts...I got a little carried away. xD Sorry about that.)
Person Two: Anderson threw a storm of bayonets to their target: Alucard's cold, empty heart.
Person Three: Alucard jumped back. He was too great to be hit by Anderson's mere knives. After all, he was living his greatest moment.
Person One: Captain sent his leg flying at Alucard. His aim was sure to hit its target without fail.
Person Three: Alucard grabbed his leg and quickly tossed him aside, sending him flying into a heap of dead people.

***Person Three has taken the whole immortal and all-powerful Alucard thing WAY too far. Not to mention, he made one of the biggest boo-boos--controlling Person One's character. I didn't write it out, but that was the last post Person One wrote. Another mistake...it was a little boring in my opinion, but let's face it...all the Bad Examples are going to be. -.- I'm regretting asking Wyvern if I could write this...lol***

~Okay, those are all the examples I can live through right now...I can only imagine how boring this thing probably is for you guys. Now, I'm going to expand on one of the biggest subjects of Roleplaying: Grammar and Literacy...then, I'm finished. :3 ~

What Does Literate Mean?

~Literacy is roleplaying terms is how lengthy and detailed a post can be. This also explains the tolerance for bad grammar. I've included a chart based on my personal terms so you might find something different on various roleplaying sites. I'm not sure what level of literacy Wyvern is requiring for this roleplay, but knowing at least one type chart is helpful for those of you who roleplay often.~

One-Liners: This is a simple roleplay with posts that are short with very little detail. Grammar and complete sentences are not usually required. Chatspeak is widely accepted among these roleplays. Since it appears Wyvern is a Grammar Nazi, I doubt she'd want you to use this form of Roleplay. xD

Semi-Literate: This is a more complex roleplay with at least one paragraph (3-5 sentences). People who are working to develop their skills often look for this kind of roleplay. The sentences have little detail, but grammar and complete sentences are required. If you're new to roleplaying, I recommend using this form.

Literate: This usually requires at least two or four paragraphs (although some places say three). Grammar and spelling is a must. Detail also plays an important part in this type of roleplay. Basically, every level of literacy increases the need for detail and length. Don't worry though, you don't have to post 2-4 paragraphs every post. Length varies due to the situations your character may be in.

Extremely Literate a.k.a. Literate+: This has at least five, strong paragraphs. Detail is EXTREMELY important as well as an educated tongue. This can seem overwhelming for new roleplayers, especially if their posts are at the Semi-Literate level. It's almost like posting a novel at a time. xD

Are You Finished Ranting Yet? -.-;

Yes...
<.<
>.>
If I missed anything, do tell me. I have a tendency to talk about one subject and forget the more important thing. xD

nice guide. but because not all of us have endless hours to waste and cant be on all the time we may have to wait awhile for a response. just wanted to point that out. im on at least once a day, but for examle Wyvern and i are on at usually opposite times of the day. ((of course Wyvern's on NOW...)) but you see what i mean. and Wyvern is a grammar Nazi. 3nodding

I'm so glad you've all noticed. It really warms my heart. But I want all of you to keep in mind that you don't always have to ask for permission to do things. Unless, of course, it's really important.

You kind of confused me with this post. Response to what, may I ask? xD

im just pointing out that people may get impatient with waiting for other people to respond, like if two characters are in a fight and one character doesnt get on for like three weeks, due to a vacation or something. as for my comment about Wyvern, you mention here- One-Liners: This is a simple roleplay with posts that are short with very little detail. Grammar and complete sentences are not usually required. Chatspeak is widely accepted among these roleplays. Since it appears Wyvern is a Grammar Nazi, I doubt she'd want you to use this form of Roleplay. xD- that she... or he... now that i think about it i cant remember... is indeed a grammar Nazi. didnt mean to confuse you. sweatdrop

I guess we can cross our fingers and hope that doesn't happen, or I'll send Alucard after them. xD
