Everywhere was dark. Thick clouds of grey obliterated any light from the moon and the stars that might have penetrated into the blackness. Una, silent as the night that enveloped her vibrant blue frame, paced along the border of the Mizimu'Tungika lands like a lone sentry. But her purpose was not to guard. It was simply to find. Every night since she'd heard the news of her sister's impassioned departure from their homeland Una had wandered the border; back tense, ears flat against her head. She was terribly worried.

While they did not always see eye to eye, Una could never deny that Petra was a very special character in her life. They were sisters; bound together for eternity by a mutual heritage and a shared youth. The other lady meant a great deal to her (Grandpa had taught them both the importance of family, after all) and, if they could not be immediately reunited, Una wanted nothing more than to know that Petra was safe. Inner turmoil wrought tension and stress within the place where they'd grown up; the Pure and the Second had left. So had many others. Food was quickly growing scarce. Una did not speak with the spirits herself, but she knew that they must have been displeased. Something dangerous was brewing. Everyone could feel it.

Was that why Petra had left? Did she know something that Una didn't?

Her eyes had long since adjusted to the darkness and her steps were determined as she marched, every sense on edge for a sign of the bright orange lioness who was so much like her, and yet her complete inverse.

So she’d left.

Like everything Petra did in life, she did so without much thought about what the consequences of her actions might be. The moment that Una had relayed to her what their grandfather had said- all of a sudden, everything had fallen into place. The pure and the second. Her desire to be free to chose her own life. To be a warrior! Everything, suddenly made sense. She was no Mizimu! She was no sacrifice. And so, leaving her friends, her minders and the last remnants of her family, she had slipped away and joined up with the Dhati.

And it was exhilarating. Being a part of something. Suddenly accepted as the wild, wild warrior she was. Having a King and a Queen. For the last few days she had worked hard to fit in with her comrades. Although she was loud, and more then once had her inexperience shown through with embarrassing consequences, she was more or less finally on her way to her destiny.

But she was not entirely guiltless. Her wild, fiery nature let her burn off any thoughts of what she’d left behind for days. But now it was eating at her. Her sister, Una still remained in the Mizimu. Still chained as a sacrifice. She knew Una and her did not always agree… but surely, she had to feel something was wrong. Why would Una have told her if she hadn’t cared? If she hadn’t secretly wanted the same things she did? Despite everything Petra said about war and blood, Petra wanted to live. She had to believe that her sister did as well.

So in the dead of night Petra found herself sneaking back into the lands she had fled.

It was quiet, and the stillness in the air had her blood roaring in her ears. She had never been the stealthiest of individuals- and her bright pelt would be easily spotted if she made a misstep. And if she was caught… her eyes narrowed. Well, if she was caught, she was prepared. Better to be a traitor! She licked her lips and slunk through some of the underbrush. She knew the route. Closer now- she’d played here long ago, dancing at shadows and swearing to be a warrior.

And then! In the clearing, although faded by the moonlight and the darkness, Petra caught sight of Una. She was outside, away from the others. Her heart skipped. Perhaps…perhaps she was looking for her! It was fate, she knew it.

“Una!” She gasped, suddenly bursting from the bushes. She had always had a hard time being quiet. She didn’t even think that it might have been a trap. “Una, Una! You must come with me!”

Una was not manipulative or mean enough to trap her dear sister into anything, even if she felt it were to be for Petra's own good. There was never anything noble in deceit. Nevermind that Petra's poor soul might forever be damned by the spirits for betraying her fate and tossing her sacrificial privilege to the winds. The damage, if there indeed was any at all, had been done the moment Petra abandoned their homelands in favor of her own selfish whims.

Still, a part of Una couldn't help but sympathize with her sister. Was it really so selfish to dream of living? Certainly, aspiring to have some say in your own destiny wasn't really that whimsical. Destiny. Fate. What were they, anyways?

Grandpa certainly had reservations about the ways of the Mizimu'Tungika. He and Grandma hadn't agreed with her mother's spiritual fate; which she and Petra, due to the nature of their bright coats, consequently shared.

This sometimes happened to Una. After accepting that, once again, Petra would probably not be returning home, her brow furrowed in concentration and she lost herself in thought. All concentration on the outside world was lost, and she focused on the inside.

So, when the familiar and sorely missed form of her sister exploded from a patch of nearby bushes, like a cannon thrust from the bowels of a ship, Una yelped and jumped backwards in surprise.

"Petra!" she exclaimed once she'd calmed down enough to realize what had happened. Una lowered her voice and, after a quick glance around, continued in a whisper. "It is so good to see you! I have been so worried. You've no idea. Where have you been? Is everything alright? I- wait... what? Come with you? Come with you, where?"

Petra quickly hushed her voice to match Una's. "Oops," she breathed, her eyes darting around for a moment- ready to face anyone who might have been drawn by the sound of her voice. When no one showed, her expression softened. But there was still an urgency to her voice. "I'm fine, Una! Better then fine. I'm free. Una, I can't... I can't stay here anymore. I'm sorry to make you worry."

Her head shook, her brilliant red fur floating in front of her eyes. "I shouldn't have left without you. It's just...! Well, you know how I am. I never think before I do anything." She smiled. As though nothing were wrong. "Always running my head into rocks."

And then, the urgency of the situation fled back into her. She stopped where she was and looked around again. The Mizimu could not catch her. And they could not catch her sister speaking with her. "Una, you know as well as I do that this isn't the life for us. And I don't just mean me! I've come back to bring you with me to the Dhati. You have to come Una. It's our chance- and..." She shook her head. "I know I can be a bully sometime, but I don't want to fight against you. I don't want to see you with them. And what grandfather said just confirms it!"

She took a moment to breath, her ears flattening. "That's where I ran away to. The Second and the Pure...they're making their own pride, Una. They're planning something against the Mizimu, and I want to be apart of it." She wasn't about to lie to her. "It could be war."

Her sister's rushed, energetic tones and the very nature of her story set Una's heart fluttering. Freedom, the way Petra painted it, did sound truly wonderful. But Una could not shake the beliefs and customs she'd been brought up to trust and follow so easily as her sister. Yes, Grandpa and Grandma hadn't necessarily agreed with them, but they were of a dead and beaten pride. There had to be a reason the Mizimu'Tungika people had persevered for so long. Indeed, their ways seemed to have suited her mother just fine. She had, after all, taken a Mizimu'Tungika warrior for a mate and been, as far as either Petra or Una knew, a willing sacrifice.

Una refused to accept that her mother's death was founded on anything less than the ultimate right.

Petra and Una were of mixed blood; two halves originally united by war and assimilation. Now, they were of different hearts. Still, she longed to be with her sister and to make her happy. Petra's well-being meant the world to Una, and she was even more frantic about it now than she would have been otherwise, knowing how reckless Petra could be. It was true. Petra rarely paused to think before she acted. What if her sister was wrong? It was this, more than anything, that made Una wary of her sister's impetuous decision.

Touched that Petra had returned for her and eager to make her happy, Una hesitated for only a moment before she nodded. Many of the things Petra said made her nervous. "I am glad you told me this. I do not wish to fight against you either, Petra. I'm so happy you came back for me, and that you're safe. I know what Grandpa said, but I am still not sure. This is our home... Isn't it?"

She scowled, as though the words were poison in her mouth. "This is no home. Not for us." But, she knew it would take more convincing then that to get her sister to trust her. She had had this all rehearsed in her mind earlier... now, it was becoming hard to remember. All the excitement had her shaking. "What we are Una- it isn't fair. No spirits rule us, Una! We are our own people. I'm not saying that I'm afraid to die. I want to protect my pride, and I would gladly give them my life." She uttered dramatically. "But, how can I defend my pride when they want to waste my life so...uselessly? How can life be wasted so carelessly?"

She swallowed, her bright eyes darting around again. "You know I'm right. You have to!" She pleaded. "I mean, where's the logic in any of it? Just...wasting. What if the spirits want us to change? I'll tell you one thing, I feel my spirit! And it doesn't want any of this." It burned, even now in her chest.

"But, I'm not giving up on this place either, you know. I guess you're right. It's still our home. If I didn't care about it, I woulda kept running. I wouldn't have ever stopped. The Dhati wants to change the Mizimu- for the better! Think of what Grandfather said. Our tribe was consumed by the Mizimu. The Dhati will consume the Mizimu. Isn't it only fair?" And if they didn't? Well.... "And if we fail then...you'll know you're right. But, if we fail we die. If we don't do anything we die. The end is the same regardless." She rose her chin, her tail whipping behind her. "I will not let the Mizimu deny me my destiny."

Petra ran a circle around Una, watching the shadows. "I mean...don't you dream, Una? Of doing something that matters? Doing something where no body tells you the ending?"

"The purpose of a sacrifice is to appease the spirits. It isn't wasting. We pay them for permitting us to live the way that we do..." Even as she said it, Una couldn't help but think about the diminishing health of the pride. Was it possible that the betrayal of the Pure and the Second, along with the dissapearances of so many others, meant what Petra said? Did the spirits want them to change?

Una wasn't sure. She couldn't be sure of anything.

"And then who will consume the Dhati?" Una asked reasonably, turning Petra's own logic against her. "When does it end?"

Petra's point of view concerning war and death made sense to Una. She could understand where her sister was coming from. The end was the same; but she knew, in her heart, that the choices she made in leading up to the conclusion would be what defined her destiny. Not the end its self.

"Of course I dream, Petra!" Una sighed and shook her head. She was full of doubts and questions. What she knew for sure, however, was that she wanted Petra to be safe. She needed somebody to look after her. "What you say makes sense... I am torn. I want to live, but I do not want to abandon this place either. I am scared to leave."

Petra's head shook furiously. "We owe no one our lives! Well. Maybe our parents, and their parents, and their parents, and... their parents! But, those are the only spirits we're responsible for. If we choose to sacrifice ourselves- shouldn't it be willingly? How is a sacrifice a sacrifice when you aren't given the option?" She growled lowly at the thought. "It's...it's more like taking! It isn't a fair trade. But here in this pride they keep us and they don't ask!"

And who would consume the Dhati? She didn't know. She was naive, and wild, but she knew nothing was forever. "But, that's the way things are supposed to be. War... it's like a brush fire, you know? How the fire comes and clears away everything bad and new things grow- that's what we are, Una!" She pleaded. "And, I'd much rather be apart of the fire then the char." Even if it meant she got her paws burned in the process.

She shivered, her wide blue eyes blinking. Suddenly, she was aware that she didn't know what she'd do if her sister did not join her. If she did not believe what she believed. Was she wrong? No! She was never wrong! Not about this! Petra steadied herself, and moved forward. "Don't be afraid, Una. I'm not afraid. But this place..." Her ears flattened. "It's killing us, Una. What happens when we're gone? If we go quietly, then no one will ever remember us. We won't matter. We won't have even lived!"

She was dramatic- but, no one could argue that she wasn't passionate. "You're right, I want to be a warrior. I've always wanted to fight. But, this isn't just about that... it's about... something even more important then that."

Passion. War. Destiny. They were, ultimately, all comprised of the same things. Una sat quietly in the face of Petra's frenzied declarations, her bright orange eyes locked onto her sister's blue ones. A thoughtful expression played on Una's lips as she considered everything that had passed between them in the last couple moments.

A part of her agreed with the things that Petra said. It would be nice to live as long as Grandpa had- to see her own children grow and, if the Spirits willed it to be, to watch as they raised children of their own. But another, very prominent part argued that her Sacrifice was the Spirit's will. It was how, with the exception of Grandpa's stories, she'd been taught to think and to believe; trust in the Spirits and in the Pride. If what Petra said was the truth and the Spirits enabled the Dhati, which must mean that her homelands had indeed been corrupted, then so be it.

Until then, however, Una could not betray her own heart. She knew where she belonged.

"You've given me so much to think about," Una murmured softly, "I think that you must be right. I do very much want to live, and I want to be by your side. We are family. I don't know what I would be without you. Still... forgive me, but I can not make my decision just yet. I would like a few more days to think about this, and to prepare."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 13, 2009 4:24 pm

Petra took a deep breath. She didn't like the idea of waiting. She was an impulsive person. She acted first, thought later. "But...I-" She floundered. It was hard to argue with Una's reasoning. She deserved time to think this over. "But, what if we have no time Una?" She half whispered. The lowest tone she'd ever uttered from that sharp tongue of hers. "If you think I'm right, then please- don't linger here any longer!"

What if, when her sister returned, they decided to go through with the ancient ritual and sacrifice her? What if someone had seen the two sisters talking together- and now, even Una was suspect? "I... I'm very worried, Una." She furrowed her brow. Worried! Petra never worried. She was perhaps, the most brutal optimist that ever did exist. With emphasis on the brutal. But, her sister...! "There's so many whispers, Una. What if someone saw us speaking here?"

She glanced around wildly. Shadows danced like hidden faces. "I... I don't know how to argue with you. Theoretically, I know you're right. Maybe I should have thought more when I left. But some things don't require thought! Sometimes the right choice is the one you do without hesitation! I mean... isn't that... isn't that how it should be?"

Even then, her feet burned like hot fire. They'd stayed here for far too long. She looked behind her, as though the arms of the Dhati were about to sweep her back up.

"Come with me, Una!" She begged, one last time.

Petra was impulsive, while she was contemplative. They were still as they had always been; the reverse of one another, and the opposite of twins, yet inexplicably bound together. The thought of being away from her sister, and opposing her, weighed on Una's conscience like an anvil. She couldn't stand to be apart from her, nor did she like seeing the other lioness so unhappy. Still, her loyalties remained with the Mizimu'Tungika. She wasn't sure leaving and living a life of her own design was worth the risk of inciting the Spirits' wrath.

"I won't stay much longer," Una reassured her sister calmly, "all i need is a couple of days to make ready. No one knows that you've been united with the Second and the Pure- all they know is that you've left. If anyone has, indeed, seen us I will tell them that you are my sister and that you have every right to visit me on the border because you love me."

Never mind that the disappearances of the Second and the Pure, along with a number of other esteemed characters, had wrought a definite sense of panic and fear amongst the members of the pride that still remained. Una knew, like Petra, that their sneaky behavior and whispering tongues would be considered highly suspicious.

"Only I know what you're doing here, and no one can prove any different." Una smiled sweetly at her sister, "I am not in quite as much danger as you are right now, and you're right. We have lingered too long. I should return before somebody starts asking questions- we should meet again soon."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 13, 2009 9:40 pm

There was almost a small bubble of anger. Why did she hesitate? What was there to prepare? This was destiny! Didn't fortune always favor the risk takers? But her sister wouldn't move. What more was there to say? How much stronger could she beg her? "I... I think you're making the wrong choice Una!" She said in anger. Her heart hurt.

Didn't Una ever dream?

"But..." She hesitated. She was angry and she was flustered, but Una was always right. If her sister had to think about it, well... Petra was out of words. And as strong as she was, Petra didn't think she could drag her. "... I suppose I deserve it. I didn't think about you when I left. If you're mad at me about that I-!" No, no. She didn't want to fight. Una was right, she'd be cruel not to give her the chance. They had always been different. Petra supposed she couldn't expect her to react the same way. To feel this fire...! But oh- didn't she see the danger in it all? Didn't she think? [But, then- Una always thought.]

"I'll come back again." Her breath caught in her throat. "I'll meet you here in a few days. But, war isn't going to wait Una. I just hope it waits long enough for you!"

Dizzy, spinning. She looked around again as though to catch sight of hidden guards. Una was right about one thing- Petra was in more danger then Una was if they were caught out here. For a moment, she paused and looked at her sister. Searching her face for a last minute change of heart. For some sign that she wasn't about to run home alone. That her first mission hadn't failed.

But when she saw nothing on the lioness's face, the fiery cat turned, and ran. It was a familiar feeling. The Mizimu lands, passing her by. It didn't bring the same spark and fire it did the first time. "Una is right," Petra thought to herself. "She must have something left. In a few days, she'll come around!" How could she possibly disagree?

How could she possibly not share the same dream?
