How many people read western comics or GN's? It seems to be a bit of a rarity these days. I know people who read boatloads of manga, but never touch the western comics and it's near impossible to get them to even try them.

It's a shame because there have been some really fantastic comic series over the years that haven't come out of Asia.

On the other hand I think that the western comics haven't really produced anything noteworthy in the last 10 years or so.

So discuss:

Do you read western comics?
If so which ones?
Do you know people who won't read western comics even though they voraciously inhale Asian ones?
Is the western comic industry suffering from lack of talent or is the disinterest and sagging sales stemming from something else?

I haven't read anything recent for ages, though I do still purchase and enjoy back issues of X-men and it's various offshots. I've read several of the other popular series as well (though not as thoroughly as X-men) IE: Spawn, sandman, and at least a few issues of just about anything marvel put out before the mid nineties.
I was a rabid marvel, X-men in particular fan girl then but, I stopped reading at the age of apocalypse story arc. I tried reading a few times after that, but it seems to me the quality of writing has constantly slid downhill. I really can't stand the art anymore either. I can't stand the look of digital comic art, I guess I'm old fashioned, but it just loses so much of the depth and interest for me.

I think western comics being published by major comic house are just lacking in creativity and ingenuity. I know it's hard to get new things out there in an inundated market that's already not seeing a lot of sales, but sticking to tried and true can't keep going forever. Or if they're going to stick to the big names, why not cook up an alternate universe (as they're so fond of doing anyway) and play with things to see what resonated with the people, just something to get themselves out of the confusing muck of storylines just about every long running series is stuck with.

I'm surprised I didn't answer this earlier.

I've been reading comics for as long as I can remember. I used to be into the marvel superheroes but eventually I grew to like more independent stuff. Though, nothing I'd consider myself a super huge fan of.

I read a lot more manga than I do comics theses days, but I still buy cheap anthologies of anything that looks even remotely interesting. Lately I've been interested in getting a hold of the silent hill graphic novels. I read one once but I know there are several by different authors. I saw the completely collection last time I was browsing amazon but it's prohibitively expensive. sad

I have no idea what would really help the western comics industry though I really hate the way it's slowly dying, and mostly being kept alive to feed into movies and poor marketing schemes.

There are a bunch of comics that I really wanted to get into as a kid but really wasn't able to. I wanted to read Spiderman and Batman. Still do, but sadly I'm one of those people who wants to start at the beginning of something. However, even though I am a collector of things, I don't think I would mind reading reprints of these comics.

Do you read western comics?

Not often! I have read Watchmen, which was really good. I read part of the Anne Rice Vampire comics, I've read most of Xmen...um...some xmen version alternate worldything... Some Star Wars comics. The Dark Forces ones I think is the name... I read part of the Faeries stuff which was freaking awesome (but I'm not sure what exactly the name is or who wrote it, but it reminds me of Charles DeLint)

If so which ones?

Woops... I already elaborated.

Do you know people who won't read western comics even though they voraciously inhale Asian ones?

Not that *won't* read them...just don't.

Is the western comic industry suffering from lack of talent or is the disinterest and sagging sales stemming from something else?

I oppose Disney's purchase of Marvel Comics. I don't know that there is a lack of talent...it just seems like people are bowing to the almighty dollar instead of putting out stuff that may not sell as well as they'd like.

I've been meaning to read Faeries for soem time everyone is always saying it's great.
X-men has so many incarnations now it's hard to know what you're reading. I used to read x-men pretty hardcore and I could keep most of it straight but since I've been out of the loop for a long while I'm totally lost.

I just posted about this in the AMC yesterday I said this in that thread:
Quote:

Disney is such a huge company with so many arms that it probably won't effect things at all.

Besides, the whole reason the comic industry hasn't totally collapsed on itself already is because of corporate sponsors wanting to buy character/story rights to make more movies. Marvel wouldn't have been able to keep itself going if not for interventions like this one. So be happy it's keeping marvel afloat.

I honestly hate that Disney owns marvel. I was upset and swearing about it as soon as I found out. I am deathly afraid they're going to "Disneyify" it like the do everything else. But marvel has been constantly slipping in recent years the recent comic story lines and art in ling running series (like X-men) are probably the worst I've ever seen them. So changing ownership might be the best thing that happens to them. And I'd rather have changed Marvel that's still in operation than no Marvel at all.

I may change my tune depending on how things play out in the future.

I was introduced to western comics when I was in my 20s. Yeah, I don't fit the poll. xd But then again, I don't really read them. I don't like the feel of them. It's just like how I don't read the newspaper because I can't stand the feel of it either.

You said that there hasn't been lots of new noteworthy people but Actually marvel has some new people I would buy series for. Like hit monkey and he not released yet but the traveler.

i've been reding comics books for a while. I love lots of the stuff from the 90's. i own alot of the wolverine series. and some X-Men. But There is one newer guy I have been reading alot of and it's deadpool. I don't know but that character has a spark about him that makes him interesting. It's horrible for me because A,, OF MY FRIENDS AND MST OF MY FAMILY READ MANGA BUT NEVER EVEN TRIED COMICS LIKE MARVEL OR dc. And in my opionon I think the ongoing rise in popularity of Manga is one of the reasons that comics went down.

Deadpool has a huge cult following, but I've never totally seen the appeal there. I appreciate that it was totally just a let's see how crazy we can make this an get away with it series and it's amusing. But I just couldn't really get into it.

I agree with you about manga to a large degree. But to be fair comics had been slipping before the manga explosion and everyone loving manga re-interested the public in graphic novel format.

However, there is that large swath of people who are insistent that manga are the superior form of comics no matter what. Even though in many cases it's simply not true. especially since the manga market has been losing more and more money and is essentially churning out the same 5 stories with different characters.
