I've had many debates about this topic.

Do you consider yourself to be Black or African-American?
Is there a difference or are both terms used in the same context?
Does it offend you when you are called 'black'

I consider myself African American.
I'm an African and an American.
When someone calls me black I say "I'm not black I'm brown!"
Usually I really dont mind though.

Yeah I agree..My ethnicity is not a color...

[I prefer American over anything, but if I have to be defined by "ethnicity," then I prefer "black," actually. I'm around so many non-black people, how am I supposed to let them know to call me otherwise? In elementary school through highschool, sure, you can tell your peers (and maybe your teachers) that you prefer "African American." But out in the real world, how exactly does that work?

Someone says, in reference to you, "Yea, I know [Ebony Beauty], she's black. There she is now...!" And you're right there.
What do you do? Interrupt and declare that your ethnicity cannot be defined by a "color?" xd Really?

Before I moved, I was around mostly black people, and I went to a nicely mixed highschool. In some circles, if you said, "I'm 'brown,' not 'black,'" you might have gotten, "Yea, okay, '*****,'" as a response. xd

I make it easy for people. Don't try to be super-politically-correct; just say black. If you feel like making the extra syllables and saying African American, I can't stop you, but don't trip over yourself over something so unimportant.

BTW...this is a repeat topic...

[You'll point that out every time? Even with strangers? What do they care what you "like?" Most adults know it's not usually considered disrespectful to say "black." So they are going to say whatis convenient for them. Mexican and Latin are two different things, so I tend to call Hispanic people by what they consider themselves to be; Hispanic people seem to identify more with their ethnicity than anyone else (Asians aside). So I wouldn't call a Mexican a Puerto Rican if I knew better; it just sounds disrespectful because they identify more with their culture. But African American? How you do even know if the person was of African decent? What if their parents are from Germany? xd ...I'm just picking now, LOL. It's not that serious and indepth.]

I like black better it describes the African diaspora in a whole including: Afro-Caribeans, Africans, Afro-Latin, and African descendants living in other places like the U.K and the U.S.

I'm Black. There is very little about me that is African, other than my given name, which shall remain unspoken, if i can help it, and even that came out of a book, not from an African relative.

There are so many different kinds/classes/races/ethnicities born in Africa, that the term African-American has very little meaning anymore, at least to me.

[*Applaudes thirdeye and Angel*
I agree that if you use "black," you can easily cover all "kinds" of "African Americans." Plus, are we really "African" anymore? Generation after generation has been born here and passed on.... More so today than in the past, African Americans are people residing in the US from Africa. Those of us who are 3rd or more generation American have so little "African" in us it doesn't make sense to try to define us that way. Black people and African people are completely different ethnicities. wink ]

I completely agree with you. Going back on my family tree, it tells me that yes, I have some African in me, but after the white slave owner raped my great great great (you get the point) grandmother, wouldn't that put "American" blood in me?
If you are born in the united states, aren't you an American? Eh... In my history class the teacher always hesitates wether to use black or African-American as to not hurt our feeling...? I guess...
America is a big melting pot, but we have something in common. We are all Americans... and to say you are African-American... I dont know, unless you are directly a decendent (Spelling) of someone from africa... neutral

I kinda like it when people who know me call me "chocolate." It's kind of cute. But I wouldn't recommend just throwing the word around at random people; you might offend them.]

Well of corse, if I don't know them I just reffer to them as African American. I don't really like the term black, because well...most of the time they arent black. They're brown!
