This week, our first August contest, while I set up our guild's small Summer Contest, is a Riddle contest.
There are going to be 4 riddles. You have to figure them out.
Rules: 1. Cannot do all riddles. Only do one. 2. You cannot ask me for help this time. 3. These are actually quite easy, and I had to do them for my Stats class. 4. Once the puzzle is answered, I will post the answers
Open Monday, August 10 Closes Saturday, August 15
You have six days to figure out the riddles.
Also, give me feedback on this contest. ^_^

------------------● ● ● Answers: Puzzle 1: A rich mathematician was found murdered at his desk in his mansion. Before he died, he wrote down this number: 84328853734348. What does it mean? Here’s a step-by-step guide for would-be puzzle detectives: As the victim wrote the number just before he died, let’s proceed on the assumption that he was trying to convey information about the murderer. And as the victim was a mathematician, maybe he used a numerical code.
Let’s look at the numbers: They are single digits, and both 0 and 1 are absent. (So are 6 and 9, but that’s not interesting.) This could mean they refer to a telephone dial, on which only 0 and 1 have no letters. Plus, phones are often found on desks. So let’s ponder the dial and consider the circumstances: The victim was rich and lived in a mansion. He probably had household help. Aha! Among the several letters associated with each number on the dial, we can find this statement: “The butler did it” (8=T, 4=H, 3=E, 2=B, 8=U, 8=T, 5=L, 3=E, 7=R, 3=D, 4=I, 3=D, 4=I, 8=T).
This couldn’t happen in real life, of course: There’s no such thing as a rich mathematician!
Puzzle 2: What does this series of words represent: Circle. Arc, Disk, Around, Equator, Interminable ...? Answer: Pi. The alphabetic position of the first letter of each word (which are clues too) corresponds numerically to the digits in pi (3.14159...). For example, the “C” in Circle corresponds to “3.” The subtle clue is the period after Circle, which corresponds to the decimal point after “3.”
Puzzle 3: How many different license plates can be formed if you begin with 000AAA and end with 999ZZZ? I have no idea where to start! Here’s how it works: Ten different digits (0-9) can go in the first place, 10 in the second place, and 10 in the third place. So multiply 10 (for the first place) times 10 (for the second place) times 10 (for the third place). That’s 1,000 so far (000-999).
Now change multipliers, because the alphabet has 26 different letters (A-Z). Multiply the 1,000 (10x10x10) times 26 (for the fourth place) times 26 (for the fifth place) times 26 (for the sixth place). So the total is 17,576,000 different license plates (10x10x10x26x26x26=17,576,000).
Puzzle 4: Eight identical sheets of paper are placed overlapping as shown in the figure here. In what order were they placed? B shows that all the sheets are squares, so they were placed in this order: D, F, H, C, E, A, G, B.

This contest was simple, so prizes weren't that much. Also, Because it was right before the Event in the guild, that is also why. Go participate in the event!
