Its one of the things I haven't gotten to try out yet. I read in a book a while back that it WAS a form of magic just one that wasn't practiced very often. Whats your take on Alchemy? Is it good, bad, useful or useless?

Alchemy can best be summed up as a spiritual science. There is a lot more to it than metallurgy and cryptic symbols. Alchemy employs forces that could be considered "magical" but I wouldn't really consider alchemy magic in any way except everything people do is magic.
Good and bad depend upon the intent of the practitioner. A gun can either provide food or kill your neighbor. And if it was useless I doubt it would have been practiced from Ancient Egypt all the way to the modern day.
I happen to be a member of the International Alchemy Guild, so this tends to be an area of great interest to me. xd

All of these are quite old, but I'm certain they can be found online for free. When it comes to alchemy you want to start with the basics and then work your way up. The basics usually means reading the works of the great alchemists of the past.

Well, it's fairly archaic... It could be dangerous, but so is it's descendant, chemistry. It's highly unproven, but, supposedly, a man by the name of Nicholas Flammel, had success. He claimed to have created both the fabled Elixer of Life, and Philosopher's Stone. I would simply advise caution, as I would with anything else!

Sotsu no Sendo Well, it's fairly archaic... Especially considering that traditional alchemical metallurgy involves toxic metals like lead, mercury, and antimony. Given, metallurgy isn't the only way to practice alchemy; it's just the most well known. That's why I highly suggest doing a great deal of research before undertaking any experiment. Understand the underlying principles and what is happening rather than just seeing it as a laundry list of mystical steps.

Yes, but the only thing I would even try to search for is the creation of a homunculus, an artificial life form, which is actually fairly well portrayed in FMA, if I'm not wrong...Might be though...

I haven't seen enough Fullmetal Alchemist to really say how it compares to actual alchemy. I've only ever seen one reference to homunculi in my studies and it was a brief mention about how some alchemists were said to have helpers that they had created, but I want to say that these helpers were small, like miniature. I can't remember for sure though.
