The air is still and stagnant, and darkness ligers in corners and doorsteps a bit longer during the daylight hours, as though ashamed to show the place to the rest of the world.
The buildings and streets are dusty and dilapidated, and rats and other wild creatures run in the shadows. People stand on streetcorners, selling stolen wares and illegal merchandise for a favor or a handful of coins. You can find most anything here, if you know where to go.
Most of the passerby keep their heads down as they hurry through the Slums, not wanting to be seen in such an area. Everyone here is armed, and you can tell the residents by their swagger and many scars.
Dingy and disreputable shops are scattered here and there. Their signs are well-kept in this part of town, in order to lure innocent passerby. Information dealers are on every streetcorner, selling out old friends and new enemies for the right price, and it is nearly impossible not to trip over all prostitutes and beggars swarming the area.
The whole area has an almost desparate feel to it, as though the regulars are aware that their time is limited, and are rushing to get everything done.

The day welcomes little light into the varrio streets. That fact had little sway on the minds of the people occupying them. Light did not make a place safer. The people of the streets had there own way of seeing things. To these wrenched souls light simply provided an illusion. This false feeling of well being was a luxury not gifted to there kind. They lived in a real world. A hard life that sees everything for what it is. They are not bothered by the shadows. Nor do they try to blanket or hide the dark.
Light beams of light warm a body laying hap haphazardly among some broken creates. Partials of dust fill every drop of light as if the beam was a tangible thing. It seemed that here even the very essence of light was dirty and imperfect. Wither it was appreciated or not the light touched this man. Indeed it was a warm sensation. Very, different from the cool shadow engulfing the street.
He squirmed a bit between the wood a debris. Most likely not yet willing to join the conscious world. The dance that had begun between his wants and his waking body was near over. The day had begun and it was simply too uncomfortable to be lying any longer. He would have groaned about his pains but it seemed a waist of effort. This wasn’t a new experience for him. He knew morning would be like this.
Deciding to prop himself up against the wall he looked about sided to side. The man moved not much more then his head against the wall as he turned his vision towards each direction. It wasn’t likely that he knew where he was but it didn’t matter really. For no matter where he goes the situation is always the same. Life is predictable when you only care about the big picture.
He ran his right hand crossed his chest and into his shirt pocket. Pulling out something near and dear to him. “Well, what kind of luck will it be today?” He spoke in a smooth and beguiling manor. Pulling out a toy deck of cards he gave it a quick one-handed shuffle. Upon finishing he pulled a card from the top of the deck. He looked at his draw, “Nine of spades…guess it’s my lucky day.” Taking his draw as a sign to get up the man arose to his feet. No telling what the street dogs where up to by now. He didn’t plan to sit round to wait and see.
