Ryu Hanazaki's Homework The differences between hippogriffs and griffins are as follows. The hippogriff's feathers range from pure black to a grayish white. Whereas the griffin's feathers range from red to gold. The hippogriff's hindquarters are that of a horse, whereas the griffin's is that of a lion. Griffins are normally found in Africa, whereas hippogriffs are found mostly in Europe. Also, the largest of the winged horses are the Abraxans. The fastes are the Granians. And the smartest are Aethonons.

Differences between Griffins and Hippogriffs Miranda Welland
While both creatures have the head and front legs of a giant eagle the Griffin has the body and hind legs of a lion and the Hippogriff those of a horse. Griffins originated in Greece, Hippogriffs are native to Europe but are no found worldwide. Griffins feed on raw meat while Hippogriffs burrow for insects, they will also eat birds and small mammals. Griffins are fiercer than Hippogriffs, a handful of wizards have been known to befriend one whereas Hippogriffs can be tamed though this should only be attempted by experts. Griffins are often used to guard treasure.
Extra Credit: Granians are the fastest winged horses Abraxans are the largest. I would consider Thestrals the smartest winged horse due to their excellent sense of direction.
Source= Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander.
(OOC: I didn't find any reference to colour of Hippogriffs or Griffins or Aethonons being the smartest winged horses. But maybe we have different sources))

The difference marduke black
A griffin is a lion and eagle combination. the first pictures of it come from the Near East and later in Egypt. It is even mentioned in the Bible! A griffin is usually a symbol for good.
Hippogryph apparently comes from the word "hippo" meaning horse in Greek. It was believed to be a cross between a Griffin and a horse. Virgil had a metaphor: "to cross Griffins with horses" meant to attempt the impossible. The Hippogryph is also apparently mentioned in Ariosto's (an Italian poet) poem "Orlando Furioso".

The difference between Griffins and Hippogriffs, By Virginia Pure.
The griffin (griffon or gryphon) is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. Griffins are normally known for guarding treasure. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine.
The hippogriff is a flying creature with the head, wings, and forelegs of a giant eagle and the body (including hind legs and tail) of a horse. The eyes are orange, while individual hippogriff colours vary as those of mundane horses do, including black, bronze, chestnut, grey, and roan. An adult hippogriff's wingspan is approximately 24 feet. A person wishing to approach a hippogriff should maintain eye contact and should bow first; if the animal bows in return, it can be touched and even ridden.
Extra credit: The largest (and most powerful) of the winged horses are Abraxans. The fastest are the Granians.

The diefference between Griffins and Hypogriffs. by Delili Morgan
Hippogriffs are magical creatures with the head, wings and forelegs of a giant eagle and the body and hind legs of horse. They have a large variety colors for the body including grey, roan, chestnut, black, and palomino, although their eyes only come in one color, orange. They are carnivorous animals and are considered dangerous until they are trained. Griffins however, have the head and forelegs of an eagle and the body and hind end of a lion. They are generally known for guarding treasure and are often used to symbolize the devine and have often been used on the coast of arms for royalty.
Extra Credit:
Fastest: Granian horses are known to be the fastest of the three horse breeds Strongest: Abraxans are the strongest and most powerful of the horses, and they often require forceful handling. Smartest: Although it isn't stated in any reference text Thestrals appear to be the most inteligent of the winged horses. They have an amazing sense of direction and can be trained to pull carriages and carry people. When riding them you can simply tell them where to go and they will get you there in amazingly short spans of time.

Distinguishing Between Griffins and Hippogriffs by Persephone Price
There are several similarities between griffins and hippogriffs, but there are even more differences. Griffins are ancient creatures, used throughout history as symbols of royalty and power because of their nature; they are a cross between the king of beasts, the lion, and the king of birds, the eagle--wisdom and might combined into one being. For this same reason they are known for guarding treasure and riches. The Hippogriff, however, is a cross between an eagle and a horse. It derives its name from the Greek 'hippo,' meaning horse, and 'griff' from the word 'griffin'--symbolizing man's early confusion of the two animals. While griffins are creatures of royalty and power, hippogriffs can be befriended and tamed. They are also very strict about manners--one must bow before approaching a hippogriff, because it is the respectful and polite thing to do, and hippogriffs demand this kind of behavior. In short, it is very simple to tell the difference between the two; the only thing they ever really have in common is the front part of their bodies, which is that of an eagle.
Extra Credit: Abraxans are the largest, Granians the fastest, and Thestrals the smartest.

Homework.
Griffins are different than Hippogriffs in a few different ways, though they have some similarities. A griffin is a creature with the front side of its body as an eagle (head, wings, legs), also like a hippogriff, but has the behind of a lion (body, hind legs, tail). Hippogriffs have the forebody of an eagle, but the behind of a horse (body, hind legs, tail). Griffins had originated in Greece. they are known to be very fierce, though some wizards have been known to befriend them. They are said to be a symbol of good and courage, and are very powerful and majestic creatures.
The hippogriff, in legends is said to be far faster, stronger and more intelligent than the griffin, apparently traveling at the "speed of lightning". Hippogriffs are extremely dangerous until they are tamed. A person wishing to approach a Hippogriff should bow first, and may touch or even ride the creature if it returns the gesture. They are considered to be easier to tame than griffins, though.
Extra Credit. Largest: Abraxans. Fastest: Granian.

Homework The front of a griffin is a eagle. The front includes the head, wings and legs. The backside is of a lion, which includes the back legs, body and tail. The griffin came from Greece and is seen as a symbol of courage. They are thought of to be fierce, majestic and powerful creatures. Wizards are known to befriend them.
Hippogriffs are told to be stronger, faster and more intelligent than griffins. Hippogriffs are dangerous until they have been tamed. You must bow to a hippogriff. The front of a hippogriff is an eagle like the griffin. However the backend is a horse. The part that is a horse is the back legs, tail and body.
