G.I. JOE was a fun action packed movie. Don't expect anything more than that. With today's special effects and computer generated imagery, the producers of the movie were able to pretty much make it a live-action cartoon... which included all the obviously corny humor that cartoons have (mostly provided by Marlon Wayans).
Included were origin flashbacks for the main characters (Duke, Ripcord, The Baroness, and Snake-Eyes), and a lot of good fast-paced action. The high point in the movie was the Paris scene, where all sorts of bad-assery took place. The final battle "climax" wasn't able to follow it up, but it was also pretty damn good.
The scriptwriting rightfully took a second seat priority to the action and special effects. It's a movie based on an old children's cartoon after all. Having seen several of the actors in other movies, it was obvious that they weren't acting up to their own caliber. I don't think Marlon Wayans will ever break out of the funny black guy who tries too hard type-cast he's been in since forever. Ray Park, always the quiet one, did a wonderful Snake-Eyes with his athleticism and energy. Channing Tatum as Duke felt really forced and two-dimensional. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Cobra Commander was the weakest performance. But again, all the negative aspects of the characters and acting are mostly due to the character development not being the priority.
The small bit of "love conquers all" theme was cute... but we all know that isn't true. Still, makes you hopeful that there just may be some form of humanity left in... well... humanity.
G.I. JOE is a very enjoyable movie for those who remember watching it when they were younger (especially with all the homages to the original show), and a really good action movie for those who aren't so old. There were parts that'll make you think "whoa." A difficult feat in itself nowadays with all the insane feats capable in today's movie making.
Millefune Rating: B+ (Snake-Eyes is so bad-a**, he doesn't need an accelerator suit.)
